2x+4y=12
- 5x+4y=24
7x = -12
÷ 7 ÷7
x = - 4
2x+4y=12
2(-4) +4y=12
-8+4y=12
+8 +8
4y = 20
÷4 ÷4
y = 5

It looks like you made a mistake on the first step. If you subtract the two equations, you should get -3x = -12, because 2x - 5x = -3x.
