  • VHS footage from 1989 when we chased the 611 and 587 on part of their one-way trip. We picked them up at Muncie, Indiana and followed them a little into Ohio.

    THANK YOU! Wife & I were on that train out of Cleveland OH! Awfully late into Muncie, and they'd put together a major welcome feast that many of us were too exhausted to eat! Lovely ice carving ornament, too. The trip continued for two or three more days, as I recall, ending in Roanoke. Marvelous trip!

    The 80's was a great time for heritage steam railroading. We had 1361 for a little bit, 611 and 1218 for a pretty long time along with 4501 and 587. I wish I was alive and able to see them run.

      +Erich Diebold 611 already returned to steam, but what if 611 can go to Jim Thorpe to meet up with 425 and then pull excursions in Steamtown and CVSR just like 765 did?

    You can really tell the difference in their wheel diameters. 611 is out for an easy jog, and 587 is at a dead run trying to keep up.

    @switchstand thanks for the reply and your fine work documenting this. That'a a long excursioin train. I'm enjoying the doubleheading but couldn't the 611 pull those cars alone, esp over that flat terrain? I like Mr Link's photo of the jet on screen at the drive in movie with steam train passing...

    Who's dong the real work, anyway. ( Is the 611 pulling or the 587 pushing a little and pulling a lot :)

    Your video is so nice and crystal clear; precise. Beautiful.
    The last segment really shows why they were lashed~up to pull all of those passenger rolling cars. WoW !

  • @NickelPlateRoad779
    @NickelPlateRoad779 11 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Absolutely not the NKP 587 is of the Mikado design and is 90' 6 7/8" long, the NKP 765 however is a Berkshire type and is 100' 8 3/4" long. There are many more differences between the two like driver size, horsepower, and tractive effort, and also each engine has its own personality. For example you could have two engines of the same type same railroad same everything, and there will be differences in the way the engines run and act and that's why I love them as no two locomotive is the same :D

    @HaloCE14 - 4501 is scheduled to come back this year for her hundredth birthday, whether or not they get her done in time remains to be seen. It is hopeful that 587 will be back under steam by 2012 as she is undergoing her 15 year boiler rebuild right now. Between 611 and 1218, I'd put money on 611 coming back although anything is possible. When the bastard David Goode cut the steam program short, a LOT of 1218's parts went AWOL. Anyone who aims to bring her back has their work cut out for them.

    what happened to conrail

    • @JCBro-yg8vd
      @JCBro-yg8vd 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It got broken up between NS and CSX, with each getting roughly half of it. They even undid the Penn Central merger that Conrail had kept. CSX got mostly NYC track, and NS mostly got PR track. A shame really, Conrail was more steam friendly than CSX and until recently NS.

    • @NickelPlateRoad779
      @NickelPlateRoad779 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well, they weren't very steam friendly for a while after the 2101's incident. But they eventually came back around.

    • @JCBro-yg8vd
      @JCBro-yg8vd 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@NickelPlateRoad779 2101 was on Cheesie System, not CSX. Conrail had most of the track rights for the Reading Iron Horse Rambles.

    • @NickelPlateRoad779
      @NickelPlateRoad779 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      JCBro2014 Not 2101, after the round house fire in 79 she never saw service again.. I meant 2102 and her having major mechanical issues on an excursion ran by the then Blue Mountain and Reading in 1987 I think? Causing major delays to service for most of the day. After that they were pretty hesitant on steam excursions to my understanding
