Gary, great shots man! At the 5:59 mark all I could think was "Dude, you got balls standing there!" It must've felt like an earthquake or a tornado. Great shots. Saw 611 at Strasburg in 2019. On one run by of a photo freight, engineer blew that low and rumbling 3 chime. I could feel it in my teeth! Can only imagine it barking up Saluda! -Andy

Andy, thanks man! I was actually stooping down low on the ground with my left shoulder against that rock back there. I was a crew member on those 611 trips for years. That day I was making sure we'd capture this sad event for sure!

She’s a beautiful locomotive, my favorite one in the world, whichever locomotive, streamlined or not, 611 will never lose the title of the Queen of Steam! 👑 🚂

Just look at her! She has red stripes, amazing streamlining, immense horsepower and lightning speeds! What more could anyone want from such a classy locomotive?

4,200 HP? 611 actually has around 5,100 HP.

In 1994, Norfolk Southern ended their Steam Program.

That is correct. The 611 returned for her last time on Pear Harbor Day, December 7, 1994. I was there that day and no one thought we'd see the locomotive run again.

@@garywballard6310 I’m still having trouble what the NCDOT cars were. I know there was the Longleaf and Shortleaf Pine. I couldn’t remember the other ones

@@nicholasmedovich8691 I do know those NC cars were directly borrowed from the NCdot/Amtrak service to fill in for the coaches that were damaged in the NS Lynchburg Yard derailment just prior to the Roanoke, Saluda, Greensboro and Birmingham trips. Those cars actually stayed with the 611 train through the remaining trips on the NS steam program schedule. I was the PA announcer for the Roaonke trips and I recall that the NS excursion cars didn't have the newer Amtrak 5-pin hook up between the cars. My announcements never made it past the NCdot cars because of the different plugs used. My announcements were made from the North Florida commissary car.
