611 and 587 came through my hometown of Richmond, IN on the Independence Limited 89 run and was a whistle stop. I rode 611 in 92 during the Independence Limited 92 runs that also stopped in Richmond and rode to New Castle, IN
In June 1989, Nickel Plate Road H6-o 2-8-2 Mikado #587 was used for the number trips on The Norfolk Southern Railway, She passed the old Nickel Plate Road Roundhouse in Bellevue, Ohio, #587 prepares to doublehead pulled the Independence Limited to Roanoke, Virginia with Norfolk & Western J Class 4-8-4 #611.
But it’s not the exact same location. Most of the clips seen in I Love Toy Trains were originally from Berkshire Productions which originally recorded the footage, including NKP 587 & N&W 611.
Brooks Hooley this one was a cracked 5 chime but was replaced due to it having a big crack you can see the air coming out a wit it shouldn’t in the video but yes was replaced.

You’re not alone. It’s just that it’s taking forever to fire up 587. I’m pretty sure they’re trying to get C&O 2716 running first, and then the 587 but I could be wrong.
There was a huge crack that formed from inside that whistle. In July of that year, they fixed that problem either by replacing it from another 5 chime whistle, or repairing the crack inside the whistle. At least that’s what I assume.
For heavens sake get a wind screen for the microphone. Stop that wind noise from completely blanking out the engine chu. That is half the effect of a steam loco. Beautiful shot of the gear8:48 Put the damned things into revenue service. Make them earn their keep. What's the sense in all the restoration if they don't do something useful and provide for their long term maintenance. That is a beautiful sight.
1218 fire up would be a complete job , due to most of her parts being lost due the retirement , the outside may look nice as always for the static display engines , but in the inside , its missing alot of components.
I've noticed that too they should of had 611 with the red striped one and 587 with the solid black one I think they should of thought of switching them up before the doubleheader (I still hope 587 returns) even if the museum it's at is under threat of have the rails ripped i think the Virginia museum of transportation could be a place it could go to (as well as the other equipment the diesel engines cars etc just a suggestion I'm hoping it won't end up like the way they did with grand trunk western 5629 (which I don't think they will do a thing like that)

Ah great memories, I was there for this trip and what a blast it was. The 611 is coming back, hope to see the 587 out again someday.

I love the N&W 611 and th Nickel Platte 587. Sure they are awesome traveling separately, but double heading is the awesomest.

Actually it’s 0:35, and it doesn’t sound anywhere close to 611’s 2015 whistle. But, I have to agree that this whistle sounds a lot better.
Did the 587 get a different whistle at some point? Seen a lot of footage of her running and this is the one time she's sounded more high pitched.
