  • Huge thanks to Bryson McDonald (Maac Media) for helping me document this review/ overview of my 1998 E36 BMW 328i Convertible's build. I hope this video can help answer some of the questions I get regularly about how I did things. Of course, watching the video back there's a lot I forgot to mention. Like my reinforced front bumper with chassis mount skidplate, my main oil pan skidplate, my engine/ trans mounts, etc. But, this video touches on a lot of highlights and my favorite parts of the build. If you have any additional questions, drop a comment below and I'd love to answer them. Thank you so much for watching!

    • @griffengardner
      @griffengardner  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Honestly I couldn’t agree more, I despise the steering wheel in it now. Not one of BMW’s best OEM wheels. I know mine needs to come off because it’s got that typical E36 squeak/ grind when I turn the wheel, but I haven’t done enough research to know exactly what wheel I need/ associated hardware. I know I would ideally like another OEM wheel with an airbag since this is a street car with stock seats/ seatbelts, but I’m open to ideas.
      Regardless, rest assured upgrading this will be featured in a future episode😉

    Nice overview. I'm an original '98 M3 sedan owner and appreciate the attention to detail and OEM look ;) I was laughing about the glovebox.. when my M3 was new the glovebox never closed all the way and had that gap.. the interior quality in general is poor. That phone/cup holder thing is gold I had never seen that - I have to look for it.
    Regarding the fender liners it can actually be somewhat dangerous to take them out because they tie in to the front under-bumper trim... I've seen instances where the 4 or 5 trim pieces get loose and damage the radiator and other things under there.
    One thing I noticed is your seats... I think you would notice a massive improvement using the two-part leatherique products.. it won't hide the cracks but will make the leather look matte and new.

      No but seriously! I strongly dislike the stock steering wheel, just can't afford my dream wheel right now, a fresh M-Tech II steering wheel. I'm gonna have to custom order one for mine because ideally I'd prefer one with all black stitching and fresh leather, and maybe a bit of extra padding like some companies offer. Plus, my clock spring currently makes all sorts of awful noises when you turn the steering wheel, so sooner rather than later I'll be on the hunt!

    Props for actually understanding the rear suspension set up and the trailing arm bushing in particular. I cringe every time someone recommends poly RTABs

    • @griffengardner
      @griffengardner  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you so much. I only learned by making the mistake of doing things wrong the first time. I want to be fully transparent about that. But absolutely, IMO I can’t see any application that a poly RTAB should be used on a E36. The monoball only offers advantages with no downsides, aside from price. But again, thank you!

    • @thatflywelshguy9662
      @thatflywelshguy9662 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@griffengardner downside is massive NVH on 3 bolts which rip out. The weld in plates are a good fix but still tons of harshness on roads. Meyle HD and limiters are best for the street

    • @griffengardner
      @griffengardner  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@thatflywelshguy9662 well not exactly, the prying side to side motion as the car cambers under load is what causes them to rip out, and a monoball eliminates any resistance to motion in that plane of motion. If anything you could say OEM would be good but adding limiters leaves you with a bushing that behaves more like a poly bushing, preventing the trailing arm from tilting under squat naturally and therefore creating bind, prying on the bolt hole locations as the bushing resists tilt.
      Edit: and yes possibly a small increase in NVH but that’s hard for me to judge because I actually like NVH. Stock and rubber feels too vague and disconnected to me.

      YESSSS you and me both! I want to keep a airbag so I’ll have to find one with an airbag, as well as one with clean black stitching and not the M color stitch a lot of people do. (No M colors on a non M car😂) but heck yes that is on my list to do!

      So there’s a lot of places to look, I’d start with simply doing an Autotempest search for 3 series BMWs from 1992-1999. Then maybe start talking to people like @itemb or @chelseadenofa on Instagram. They always have a supply on hand or know where to get them.

      I definitely think the best place to start is fix any leaks, any weird noises, address any maintenance concerns, and then do something like a very solid polish of the paint and a steam cleaning of the interior. Then I feel like you start with a fantastic blank canvas to do whatever you'd like to do!!

    • @griffengardner
      @griffengardner  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Absolutely I couldn’t agree more! I should have driven it in the video but I actually am itching to make it a bit more functional so I can drive more long distances and enjoy the parts on the car. I promise despite the condition she is definitely a driver. I’ve put almost 80,000 miles on it since I got my license 6 years ago. Just stay tuned, because I just bought a set of DForce LTW5’s with 245/40/17 Dunlop Direzza ZIII 200tw tires and I plan on raising it a bit and setting the alignment to be more grip oriented and I’ll have some fun with it then, and will share here!!

    Awesome video, awesome car! I enjoyed the pace of your voice, everything iis very clear and it makes it super understandable even for a non english speaker like myself.
    I'm really looking into E36 these days as a little project aside from my daily which I don't really want to modify too much. Anyway all the cars I looked at were either old looking or flat out janky so it's nice to see you can actually do something clean and sleek.
    I know this video is pretty old in internet time but I'd love to hear your point of view on what engine modification are worth it on a E36. I've seen many people going for turbo and it just looks uncontrollable like the car isn't meant for that much power, at all.
    On a side note, is there anything you can do to have the seat's leather "repaired" at a decent price? Or is it better to just buy new ones?

    • @griffengardner
      @griffengardner  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you so much, I always try and speak on these things in a way to make them easier to understand. So I’m so happy that you think it was easy to follow! Totally understand your search coming up with a bunch of junky cars, I had the same issue searching for my E36 M3 that I just purchased. The nice ones are out there, just getting harder and harder to find.
      So as far as more power that’s actually a great question. If I had to pick the ideal power level for an E36 chassis, especially a stock body car that can’t fit more than a 245/255 tire, I’d say somewhere in the 3-400 wheel max power level is perfect. To me, that puts you right in the realm of lightly modified S54 power level, which to me remains the ultimate power plant for an E36, considering the fact that it bolts in to stock transmission and engine mounts, and is a relatively easy swap in E36s these days. I’d say you’d spend a good bit less doing a S54 swap yourself and end up with 300+ wheel reliably as you would doing a good turbo setup with 400+ that may not be reliable long term and may be overwhelming for the chassis.
      So at the end of the day I hate to recommend a swap, but the S54 really does feel to me like the perfect match for the E36 chassis!
      Also, as far as the seats go there are companies that produce new leather covers for them, you just have to find a reputable upholstery shop to install them. But that’s a viable option!

      @@griffengardner Thank you so much for your answer and sorry about the time I took to answer but my computer never told me about it. I just go the popup right now on another computer...
      Anyway I'll look into an S54 engine, idk how easy it is to find in Wine&Cheese country but I'll look into it.
      So far I've seen people installing a compressor kit on the cheap (less than 2k$) and it looked both interesting and less messy (no need to cut stuff, it's pretty much bolt on).
      Thanks again for the answer about the power level it can take, I guess it could be a very nice project car as I'm getting more and more reluctant to upgrade my Audi S3 since it's the family's daily and my wife uses it to carry the kids back and from then kindergarden x)

    respect for keeping it static but it's way too low bro, how can this still be fun to drive?

    • @griffengardner
      @griffengardner  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      So definitely it was fun to drive for the cool factor, and for the feeling of the aesthetic the car had- but it was a very anxiety ridden experience every time I drove when it was at this height. In my new setup it’s still low, but the anxiety aspect being removed has made it a much more calm and enjoyable experience as opposed this setup. It’s hard to find that balance and I love both, but for unique reasons.

    • @swansmeister
      @swansmeister 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@griffengardner well if you take bigger wheels and/or a tyre with a little more meat the car will automaticaly give you that lower look because the wheelarches will be filled but will still be high of the ground because of the big wheels and meaty tyre. My c63 is low also but still very driveable.
