1978 Firebird Supercharger Trans Kickdown Cable Install (Ep.8)

  • Adding the Weiand 144 supercharger meant that the carburetor would sit too high for the stock transmission kickdown cable to reach. To remedy this, we got a replacement cable which should be a few inches longer to compensate for that added height. In order to install the cable, we need to drop the transmission pan, so we will add a transmission drain plug while we are in there, and try to remedy some oil leaks.

    From my very limited amount of transmission jobs (filter, gasket, & fluid change) I have done 6. Two of them were slipping pretty bad & soon went out anyways. My thought is, IF THE TRANSMISSION IS SLIPPING, ONE MIGHT WANT TO KEEP THE METAL SHAVINGS-the glue that binds) However, if the transmission is operating fine, then I always clean it out & replace filter, gasket & fluid. It all depends on how burnt the fluid is. After removing a transmission with trans cooler, Be sure to top off trans fluid! I wanted to say, You showed some ingenuity & worked with what you had at hand & did a good job!

    I wouldn't worry about a little residue in the pan, the fluid still looked good. I think that's a healthy transmission.

      He said he had the pan off 5000mi ago, putting fresh fluid in then likely cleaned up some of the dirt that was settled in the trans and dumped it in the pan.

      i agree with you, I had to change my transmission gasket and the fluid was still in good condition but there was a lot more build up than this pan... my transmission is still in a good condition

    You can adjust the kick down cable by pushing down on the d shaped tab and pushing in the plastic sleeve on the cable itself. Then release the tab and open the throttle to full open, the cable will click as you open the throttle and self adjust to the perfect setting

    • @FuzzyDiceProjects
      @FuzzyDiceProjects  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yep, that's the way to do it! Might need to add/remove a click or two to get it right where you want it after that initial setting, too

    you could have welded a castle nut to the pan upside down that way it can drain properly :P

      @FuzzyDiceProjects  6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Aha, ding ding, best idea yet! Good thinking, will keep that in mind for the future. It really does drain enough that it isn't an issue, though

      The Right Stuff is just that, its the right stuff! I had a cousin of mine tell me its a gimmick, so to prove him wrong I used it to completely seal off a small block chevy I had on my run stand, the only other gasket I used was the exhaust gaskets. well, I made him a firm believer LOL

    Slot the welded nut down to the pan surface in a couple places almost down to the pan surface to allow for full drainage

    • @FuzzyDiceProjects
      @FuzzyDiceProjects  6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Hmm, good thinking! It drains enough that I'm not concerned about it, but that is a good point. Could even just raise it off the surface a bit before welding and leave a gap in one spot, hadn't considered that.

    A vote for using a pipe thread next time you make a drain plug.

    So as long as you are easy on it you don’t need the kick down installed?
    My turbo build is making it hard to incorporate the kick down but I’m just tuning for driveability right now.

    I love you fuzzy, but buy a drain plug kit for 5$ man. That thick nut and weld inside the pain wont even let half of the fluid drain. You can also use permatex red tac and never have pan leaks again.

    • @FuzzyDiceProjects
      @FuzzyDiceProjects  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It drains out most of the fluid, only maybe half a quart stays in there which won't spill out when removing the pan in most situations anyway (you can get even more out by tilting it). Although, it's mostly stubbornness that I won't buy a kit! The new gasket seems okay, I haven't had a cork trans pan gasket leak and they are my go-to now. I don't like using sealants in hard-to-clean areas for most things since it seems like I always end up taking things apart several times.

    • @RabidDogEOCF
      @RabidDogEOCF 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oh okay, maybe its just the camera angle that makes the nut look huge. As for the red tac, you just lightly spray the gasket on both sides (esp. cork as they have low torque twist/crush tolerance) and place it on. No mess or cleanup required, and in the hundreds of gaskets I've used it on, not one problem. Love your videos!

      you can buy a brand new pan with a drain plug for $20.

  • @shaneallen73
    @shaneallen73 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    You should have welded the nut on the outside or the pan because there is no possible way without taking the pannoff to remove all the fluid in the pan unless you use a pump to remove it or something.

    • @FuzzyDiceProjects
      @FuzzyDiceProjects  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Having it closer to flush with the pan (or completely flush with the bolt removed) helps with a couple of things. For one, it gives a wider sealing surface area (even moreso with a flange bolt) for the aluminum washer to seal against, and you don't have to worry about pinhole leaks in the weld on the outside of the pan. It also is much lower profile and would be easier to work with when removing/jacking/sitting a transmission on a flat surface. And really, it drains almost all of the fluid, leaving only maybe half a quart in there, which isn't a problem if you tilt it to drain it and/or keep the pan somewhat flat when removing.

  • @kevinAuman1
    @kevinAuman1 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Ya know, I'm still not sure why the hell the manufacturers did not put a drain plug into the trans pan to begin with 🤔🤷‍♂️🤦‍♂️ sure would make things a whole lot easier and less messy for sure!

    So, the kickdown cable should be kind off tight or snug when the throttle is not depressed? I am asking because in my Corvette 1978 the cable is quite loose when the throttle is not engaged.

    • @orrprosegaming7851
      @orrprosegaming7851 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would look it up somewhere else but it's not supposed to be really tight or super snug. I would leave it alone until you read a service manual for the exact vehicle so it wont break or put excess wear on anything

    • @orrprosegaming7851
      @orrprosegaming7851 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      But if you really are concerned press the d shaped tab and pull the throttle to full open and you should hear clicking. After that pull it 2 clicks tighter and it should be ok

  • @andreg8192
    @andreg8192 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    So you don’t have to install the trans kickdown, I thought it could burn up the transmission without being isntalkwd

      On 700r4 and th400 yes but on th350 the pressure stays the same so you dont have to

  • @Zantrop64
    @Zantrop64 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    That would be an ambitious project, but you could install a manual transmission to best use all the power gain from the supercharger

  • @kotimoto

    Why not weld the nut on the outside, it would help a complete drain without much hassel.

    What exactly does a transmission kickdown cable do?

    • @justd3fy
      @justd3fy 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      when you open the throttle all the way the cable will make the transmission drop down one gear so you can accelerate faster

    • @MojoWitwicky
      @MojoWitwicky 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Kicks down into 2nd gear so you can pass people, commonly known as passing gear.

    IMO if you have a supercharger, you should know the exact function of the parts and dont tell viewers they dont need a cable when you cant even install your properly. Let alone recommending to guess and order the longest length instead of reading a tape measure. .What happened top the custom "bracket" ? You have had 3different brackets for a single carb and engine? Put the camera down and read a book.

    • @FuzzyDiceProjects
      @FuzzyDiceProjects  6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I'm not quite sure what you are talking about.
      Many supercharged engine users don't use kickdown cables, but that is mostly with engines making more power than this one. I couldn't find exact specs for cable lengths when ordering parts (the specs for the part I ordered were actually a bit off anyway) so the longest cable gave the best chance for it to be correct, and it fit perfectly. The length of a cable refers to the overall length, not just the length that extends out in front of the cable bracket. Since the new cable includes an adjuster and the inner cable is a little longer than the universal bracket that I was using, I added a spacer to get the cable end adjusted properly.
      There was only ever one bracket for the cables on this engine, although two different carburetors.
