MediEvil | Sir Daniel Fortesque - A Character Study

  • Eventually an idea surfaced to have Dan be a pompous failure in life whose resurrection was his one shot at redemption. This distinctive plotline gave Dan’s character a much-needed purpose outside of the bare-bones good versus evil trope typically found in games of the PS1 era.
This video contains spoilers for MediEvil, MediEvil 2 and MediEvil: Fate's Arrow.
MediEvil was originally developed by SCE Cambridge Studio and published by Sony Computer Entertainment with the 2019 Remake being made by Other Ocean Interactive.

I always liked Sir Daniel Fortesque that despite his cowardice and hubris in life, he was at the very least brave enough to back up his bravado and lead the charge against Zarok's demon armies. XD

Plus, having him be a coward who would at least try to back up the mouth he always ran really helps that resurrected personality of his. He avoided getting into real danger but didn't shy away from it, he had talent but never trained to capitalize on it, and being resurrected was his chance to prove that he could be the same hero he told stories about being.
With the second game, it's him being the protector against dark magic. He's the hero, now, and now he gets a chance in death to live a genuine live as that hero. It won't be as narratively intriguing, but it's still fun to see him as the almost fully-realized hero. At that point, the narrative just needs to switch to showing him being the inspiration for others.
The comics definitely undo that feeling by having the already-realized hero sacrificing himself to an unlucky stray arrow in the first volley, when having him be a coward who never saw real combat still willing to actually lead the charge without any coercion or chicanery proves he always had it in him to be a true hero.

You know what i never really thought about that. I just bought the remaster and beat it cause it looked cool and i saw an old Caddicarus video praising the original. Most of the time when characters talk shit and boast, the second its time to prove themselves they fold. "I'll show you!" And show them, he did. Sir Dan got the chance of an after-lifetime and he proved himself a true hero. Such an inspired concept and design for a character that isn't seen nearly as much in games today. Seeing the resurgence of lovable and identifiable characters from the PS1 era like Crash, Spyro, and Sir Dan has been quite enjoyable.

It's a common literary theme in many stories where someone is 'Living a Lie' where they have a falsehood as part of their base identity. Often the stories are about coming out with the truth and making up for the deception. But in this case we see a story of Living up to the Lie. Which is much rarer in media of all sorts. This generally happens, as it did here, when someone boastful gets the wind taken out of their sails and is first proven to be a fake. Then they come back, sometimes after training, sometimes after getting their lucky token or in this case after being dead, and proving their detractors flat wrong. Proving that it wasn't empty boasting, it wasn't just some idiot running off at the mouth that they are THAT capable.
Think of it like someone who gets lucky in a fight and then gets a reputation for being a good fighter. Then they get confronted and back off and back off, then when cornered they lose. Their reputation is shattered, but they go through the effort to become that good fighter and in a similar circumstance everyone expects another loss, but they win. That's living up to the lie.
And that is what Dan did.

Sir Fortesque was my original "redemption arc" hero and I still love him for it. He starts out as a very believable person, out for himself and not as clever as he thinks he is but with at least the *kernel* of a great man, and dies in the process of trying to live up to it... and then when the universe punishes him for the effort, he pulls on his big-corpse pants and gets to work in spite of himself. He was never a great fighter, never a fearless champion and never a selfless guardian in life but in his second chance he becomes a versatile and competent (if visually ungainly) warrior, faces down his fears despite OBVIOUS terror and puts everything he is on the line not simply for the legend but because he genuinely wants to do right by his countrymen... and in many ways a true hero is one who had to *become* so by his own choices and actions rather than just being so by nature.
MediEvil 2 sort of feels like a victory lap to me: yes, the plot is more than a little cliche and yes, the motivation is somewhat thin but it was really nice to see Dan back in the saddle actually being the storied hero of ages past. The "fish out of water" angle gave it just about enough spice that I could overlook the weaker elements and I can honestly remember thinking something along the lines of "You done goofed, Mr. Palethorn. You're not a patch on Zarok."

I did love Sir Daniel, and I do completely agree with you on the time travel: it also ruins the sequel because it robs Daniel of a somewhat happy ending, crossing over from dark humour into misery and condemning him to a cycle of loss.
The game's world was supposed to be a "noble but dark" world where heroism can save the day but it takes a toll, aa shown in many of the denizens of the hall of heroes; by making Daniel's story a time loop it robs him of his deserved reward and makes his sacrifice magnitudes higher than that of the other heroes.

I love this unconventional choice of hero, a failure out to live up to his false legacy. The way those Gargoyles talk is very reminiscent of how the ghouls spoke in Neil Gaiman’s the graveyard book. I wonder if that was part of the inspiration as another work of Neil Gaiman’s is on the shirts of one of the pictured employees, Morpheus AKA Sandman. I know I suggested Morrigan and Flemeth and I still recommend them as they are two of my favourite characters but another good one would be Morpheus lord of dreams. Also I really love how there’s a really wholesome story despite the dark stuff about redemption with this game. Dan's backstory, at least his original backstory from the first game, always reminded me of the old Hungarian fairy tale (collected by the Brothers Grimm) about a tailor that kills seven flies at once with a single swat of a towel, and considers this such a feat that he makes himself a belt with "Seven In One Blow" embroidered on it, and through a series of misunderstandings (surely it means seven _men,_ right?), cleverness, and luck, he ends up becoming a hero without ever actually engaging in any combat.

Imagine if MediEvil 2 kept the Victorian theming, but threw out the time travel, and instead put on a theme of seeking approval.
Those stories had to have come from _somewhere,_ right? Sure, there were plenty heroes to draw inspiration from, but would they pale in comparison to, _for lack of a name,_ an idol! The Knight of Knights, the pinnacle of true heroics…
A well-respected lad who refuses to give respect to Sir Fortesque, unable to let go of his embarrassing past, and brushing off his redemption as “another stroke of luck.” And no matter what Daniel could say, what praises he could sing, the idol would avoid even looking at Sir Fortesque, muttering doubts in silent reply.
With another magician on the loose with a familiar spellbook, Daniel Fortesque could take this rare opportunity of chance resurrection to prove himself, to prove to his idol that he is worthy of attention!
He would dedicate this next tale to…to…Only to realize, after countless seeds of planted doubt, that he wouldn’t earn it. Not ever, because maybe he’s _right._ He’s still clumsy, he can’t hold his own in a sword fight, and he…was just about to defeat his opponent. All it took was a hint of hesitance, and Daniel lost, once again. As the bad guy got away, Fortesque was able to reconstitute, all but a dejected heart, without a drive to further chase the foul magician in admittance to defeat.
…only through his friends, allies that stuck through his adventure so far, caring for his wellbeing, they let him see that he doesn’t need the approval of some self-absorbed jerk always keeping his brown noses close to his ears to put you down, even sabotage you.
It’s after that, does Daniel Fortesque eventually find a rematch with the bad guy, vanquishing yet another foe for his legend, and instead of doing this for the approval of (an apparently wimpish and cowardly) idol, he dedicates this triumph to those who would already appreciate his good deeds and spirit of gold.

It makes you want to root for him as an underdog more as someone who was always a punching bag rise up to the challenge, rather than someone who kicked dogs and using celebrity status to fuck random hoes off the street. Dan is one of my all time favorite characters. He's funny, has a great and memorable design, and he's also flawed, which makes him instantly more interesting. Him having to redeem his past by living up to the stories he told to get to the top makes a great journey for him. In the end of the first game it's so rewarding to see him give that little smile before fading away from the world of the living once more, finally able to rest easy as the hero he was claimed to be. The second game is really fun, but storywise it's a bit lacking.

You know, I've never understood why everyone in-universe gives Sir Fortesque such a hard time; yes, being shot in the eye in the first volley isn't a glorious death, but he was still leading the charge into the battle, even though he knew he'd be running the gauntlet of Zarok's archers to do so. It wasn't like he was trying to run away, hide, lead from the rear, panicking or otherwise acting in a cowardly manner; he just had a fatal bout of bad luck whilst doing something brave. So why so much scorn?

It's not his fault at all, but King Peregrine's. The heroes and gargoyles aren't really mocking Dan for his actual failure, but for the undeserved status and reputation he got post-mortem because the king couldn't let the truth be known.

As much of a braggart as he was, he still led that charge into battle and inspired the soldiers on his own merits. Having future Dan step into that role undermines even that and just turns him into a figure without redeeming qualities. I'd like there to be some redeeming qualities to living Dan, because that's where we see the potential for him to become a hero in the first place.

Yeah. Not to mention, this mechanic is originally seen in the movie 12 Monkeys. Which would go on to heavily influence the plot of Soul Reaver 2. It was bleak enough to see it happen to hardened protagonists, but in my opinion, it would be a little too heavy-handed of a conclusion to Dan's arc; A character meant to carry some degree of comic relief.

Honestly I like to think on the 'time loop' thing that, instead of it being him just possessing and taking over the body permanently and thus putting him on the path to actually go out and do the heroic deeds in the first game, instead Daniel possesses him for the moment, the first arrow finally letting the knight rest and sending him back to his own time, while sending this new Daniel on his own quest.
Kinda like the idea of you going back in time to make yourself do an action you were supposed to do, or being the person who caused what happened to you to keep your life on track (Think Fry from Futurama when he goes back in time to stop Nibbler, just to end up knocking himself back into the cryo-chamber.)

I'm hearing it this way: since he had gotten himself into that situation to begin with, the only responsible thing to do is to close the time loop and relive his death indefinitely. I think it's very brave of him to see the ultimate fate of his undeath and accept it by making his first noble sacrifice all over again. It's got a bittersweet irony to it.

This is a weird idea, but it might be better to go for a new protagonist in a new Medievil III. Dan's character arc is kind of completed and it would make sense for a new hero to pave the way.

Also the way how Sir Daniel is portrayed kind of reflects the reality of Knights in the Medieval period, often they were either very violent, pragmatic and brutal people and also a lot of people back then got jobs they really shouldn't have based on lies and corruption unlike how they are portrayed in the Romance Novels of the later periods.

Thank you so much for sharing your opinion about Fate's Arrow!! I also have the same opinion, but I felt like I was really able to fully express how frustrated I was to my friends because they weren't really into the series, or were just neutral about the comic! I love Sir Daniel's story so much and to have it be retconned in the comic really grinded my gears! I'm glad to see I'm not the only one who has this opinion about the comic haha. To be honest, I would be perfectly content with only the first game haha. It has a perfect beginning and end!

To answer your question, I think Sir Dan is an excellent protagonist for kids. As I've mentioned before, _MediEvil_ was the first action/adventure series that I fully completed on the PS1, and I still look back on it fondly. Dan's goofy cowardice is entertaining and relatable, especially with how much heat he gets from NPCs. His annoyed jawless, "get on with it," is always very endearing.
Great title for a ten-year-old budding gamer. Also, thanks for the video! I learned a lot, especially about the early designs. ^^

I only saw the commercial for Medivel 2 once and had no idea what was going on, however, that one scene towards the end of it of Dan carrying Keeya always stuck out in my mind. I don't know if the commercial or the tv made the scene darker than it actually was (Or the hd of modern era making it lighter) but it always stuck with me of how haunting it is. Dan slowly walking carrying her body while surrounded by those red lights was honestly terrifying to me as a kid, but it sure made me remember it even if I never remembered the name.

If they had ended it at 1, it would've made a lot more sense, and been better for his character arc as a whole I think. I never knew they'd made a second one, so that's cool information, but honestly, I feel like they mother fucked themselves by installing him in the loop, he could've easily corrected the situation there, in the past I think.

The thing I always loved about Sir Daniel Fortesque is that He was the Underdog, He wasn't the strongest nor the bravest, and that's honestly what made more tangible than the other Heroes that He encounters in The Hall Of Heroes who are basically all clichéd Hero Tropes and I like the fact that time and again He proves that being a true Hero is not about never being afraid, it's about swallowing your fear in order to do what must be done and NEVER letting your critics deprive you of your finest Hour

It might have been courage born of ignorance, but it still is courage. Most likely Gallowmere when Dan was alive was very peaceful place so athletically gifted and heroic-looking individuals could make do with shows of skill and tall tales nobody bothers to check. Dan definitely knows how to use different weapons.

    Great video!
Gotta say though I never read Fortesque’s character from the original game as a liar or a coward; he is after all literally leading the charge against Zarok despite being Captain. I always saw him as just a regular soldier who became captain of the knights in peacetime so he’d never had the chance to prove himself in battle until Zarok invaded and then he embarrassingly died before he could really do anything. 100 years later he’s resurrected and finds history has made him into a hero so he determines to un-live up to the legend and finally defeat Zarok

  • @scootza1
    @scootza1 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

I would actually argue that Dan accepting his fate to repeat a cycle of dying, resurrecting, becoming a hero and going back in time to do it all again indefiinitely doesn't undermine his character growth. Yes, it puts him in a hopeless situation, but it seems that's the point. Courage is doing something despite knowing that the odds are against you, and Sir Dan selflessly allowing himself to be caught in a time loop for the sake of everyone else sounds like a courageous thing to me. Insane, yes, but if that's what it takes to save Gallowmere and the rest of the world this fella doesn't seem to mind

There is the possibility that, you know... Hero Dan replaced Past Dan just to be killed again so that the course of history can stay unchanged, then the body swap is magically undone (possibly by the Fairies and the Witch) so that the one doing the whole MediEvil story again is still Dan from the past. In that way, the redemption arc is basically preserved because it's the coward underdog Dan the one defeating Zarok as intended. Or at least that can happen once Hero Dan is finally free from that timeloop that forces him to die and travel back in time again and possibly go back to his actual place in time.
I keep telling myself this could be the plot of a MediEvil III we shall never get.

I'd also love to see a third game come to life that further explores what could have been an interesting MediEvil meets TMNT: Turtles in Time type of thing. And I still think Tim Burton should pick this up and adopt it, make a movie or short series of it and complete the circle.

I like how him being charismatic was his strongest ability in like and he loose that in unlife thanks to being a jawless skeleton, making him have to work with skills he lacked in life.
That being said I think Fates Arrow went to far by making him a cowardly cone man and taking away any chance of happiness for him. It should have been him as a knight during peace time that was too eager to become a hero and ended up dying because of it. We see that the one hero that actually praise him is the one who knew him in life and was the hero at the same battle where Dan died and the undead troops you summon near the final see Dan as their fearless commander they knew in life.

The entire MediEvil franchise is a very light-hearted romp of an adventure game, and honestly I don't mind how the comic portrays his time loop. I think it's a silly way to sloppily tie things together, yes it could be done with more tact and forethought but we're literally talking about Sir Daniel Fortesque... Tact and forethought are the last of his worries.

  • @calelkestifer3570
    @calelkestifer3570 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

I actually think Fate's Arrow makes Dan's arc stronger. Sure, it's not entirely about redemption on the surface anymore, but I personally like the version of Dan that is a hero at heart. Him dying to the first volley doesn't have to mean he was a coward, but I think that him being that way in life and then choosing to commit to an eternal sacrifice loop where he has to consistently prove himself even though he's done it already, and choosing that over and over again without hesitation is a redemption in itself... just one that doesn't end.
To also be fair, I don't think it would be farfetched to say that Dan loses his memories of the loops and the time travel after he dies, so each time he restarts the loop, every time, it becomes about proving history right all over again. His eternal afterlife becomes a grander, repeating journey of proving himself as a Hero, performing as a Hero without that intrinsic motivator, and then choosing to repeat the cycle all over again in the most ultimate selfless act in order to keep Gallowmere safe from its continued Necromancy problems.

Considering that we’ve been getting some great video game to tv adaptations like cuphead and arcane, I think medevil would be perfect for that format. Maybe not a tv show per se, but a medevil movie would be neat to see. Something that both general audiences and fans can enjoy. It’d be a great to generate hype for a medevil 2 remake and maybe a medevil 3.

As I see it, the comic shows how Dan became stuck in that loop, happening after the set events of the two games we played, meaning the Dan we played as WAS the cowardly one that proved himself a hero and the comic just jumpstarted the sequel events of the time loop.
So that part of his character is intact.
Events of the timeline were going to change thanks to past Dan who was implied to not even show up to the battle, that's why hero Dan was needed in the past to set the events right.
That still leaves coward Dan and he no longer seems to be part of that timeline.

I'm honestly baffled as to how the writers came to the conclusion of Dan being trapped in an endless loop of repeating his adventure was a fitting end. Maybe it was based on the first game getting re-released a few times, but nothing after that? At the very least, he has a potential way out in Kia.
