A "Sub-Master", in my experience, Does have audio running through it, just before the Master. It's purpose in Analog (and PT) is to give yourself a fader before And after bus processing. Multitracks -> Groups -> S.M. -> Master. IE: the Sub-Master could have a Bus Compressor (and other Bus Processing) to Glue the Mix, and then it's fader would "Push Into" the processing on the actual Master. (Say a Tape Emulation Plugin). You can Automate into the 2-bus, and Automate after it for the final Print.
In this context I think Kenny was referring to simply a track that controls other tracks without it acting like bus in the traditional sense. Much like a VCA fader, but on steroids.
Your videos with simple subjects always show me new tools to use. I've never used grouping, but I'm sure I will find reasons to, now that I know it exists. As always, thank you!!!

Honest question: whats the advantage of using submaster controller tracks over traditional bus routing? Id think that adjusting the volume faders for 'follow' tracks is disadvantagous, because some of your individual tracks' plugin settings are dependent on the input level (compressors for example)
The fader doesn't affect input into the track, it comes somewhere after the plugin chain. Folders are for signal summing, sub-masters are for control without routing change. The ideal would be using sub-masters and busses together, coz why not. Just keep in mind that the submaster will control the faders that feed the bus, and will therefore have an effect on processors that are input dependent. Neither is superior than the other, just different for different applications.
Cool video and nice topic ! I came to combine folders and "subgroups" : I set my folders as VCA and automation lead only and the inner tracks as VCA and automation follow. I find this settings pretty easy and convenient to use for my workflow.

In a video on VCAs you did 3 years ago, it doesn't seem that this approach is very different, other than the changes are on the visible track faders rather than the VCA fader that's kind of invisible. And the VCAs have some additional flexibility. My other question though is, how many Gain Stages are there in a Reaper track? Is there a video covering the Entire signal flow? It seems that there are quite a few "hidden" places to adjust levels, that are fantastic, but could get you into trouble if you forgot that you adjusted something and can't "See" the adjust on say the Surface Level.

Dear Kenny, your Reaper tutorials are great help and gives deeper insight. I request you to make a tutorial about MIDI Automation in Midi Editor. Such as CC. Expression, Breath, Pitch, Portamento etc. Can we record them as Automation Envelope? Or control them with Midi Controller Faders/Knobs by assigning them? Didn't find much help in that area. Only way I can do that with mouse writing. Which is not very easy for parameters such as 'Pitch' or Portamento' etc.
The downside of this is that you can not write automation with a sub track, at least the last time I tried. A vca track is much more useful but you miss the moving faders with that option.

That's up to you. If you want to process the group, use a folder. If you want to control the group, use this. Or a VCA. There's no wrong way.

Correct. But this shows movement on the individual faders which the VCA does not.
