I bought an official Bestway LAY-Z-SPA Round Thermal Hot Tub Cover to try to save money on electricity running costs and to also help protect the Hot Tub from direct sunlight. But will it actually make a difference? In this video we will find out.
Bestway states this:
Improves insulation, reduces heat loss and speeds up heating up time and so makes your Hot Tub up to 40% more energy-efficient.
Completely water repellent & UV resistant Duraplus material.
This insulating hot tub cover offers a double layer of thermal insulation. The LAY‑Z‑SPA thermal cover improves heat retention and allows you to heat the water much quicker.
The LAY-Z-SPA thermal hot tub covers are made from ultra‑strong 3‑ply UV resistant and completely water repellent Duraplus™ material, the same as LAY-Z-SPA hot tubs, and have double‑stitched seams making them stronger and more impermeable. They reduce hot tub heat loss with a thick layer of insulating cotton and an anti‑mildew treated interior.
Compatible with all inflatable hot tubs, the LAY‑Z‑SPA hot tub thermal cover is easy to put on and take off. It includes a zippered door for a built‑in pump and it can be removed for external pumps.

No problem. It does make a difference keeping it warm but also protects it from direct sunlight

So it was a difference of 3 degrees. I guess in those ambient temps, it will heat about 1.5 degrees per hour? So it would take 2 hours of extra heating without the cover. The heating element is 2 kW, so you saved 4 kWh. Don’t know your energy prices, but I guess around 0.15£/kWh? So you saved 0.60£ in about 12 hours. During the day in the sun, it would save less than during the night, so let’s say 1£ saved per 24 hours? So by using it only during spring/summer/autumn (250 days per year?) it would take 5-6 months to break even on the investment (125£), if you heat it to 38 degrees every day.
Does this sound about right? I’m considering buying one myself, just want to figure out the ROI of it before deciding. 😊
If it’s a cold night it will definitely save money, but also it protects it from direct sunlight which will perish the Lay Z Spa. Been pleased with ours
A saving 3 degrees i thought it may have been more like 8-12
Just bought it the one for santorini for 140£ and have a look will it help at all 😂 as its around 7 to 16 degrees outside and i want to start running it ,will have a look will it actually help or not ,im pretty sceptic but i give it a try and if anything send it back
Yeh it really does help a lot. It’s like us wearing a big thick coat when it’s cold outside. And also helps protect the Spa from the suns rays
My layzpa tends to be about 33C the morning after already though? So that implies it made no difference. Did I miss you doing a second overnight test with out it to compare?
The cover definitely helps
My electric bill went up over 200$ a month in South Carolina and it doesn’t get anywhere near that cold so I had to get rid of it
Oh how odd, it’s chilly here at night but ours didn’t shoot up that much.
Been looking for the 201cm square cover for a over year now and lazy spa still don’t have it in stock
A whole year, blimey that is a long time, let's hope they get it soon as these things really make a difference.
How much is it costing you to run this per month in the winter?
No idea as it’s packed away for the winter. If you do run it make sure you have a nice ground mat and a thermal cover
How would you say this product compares to others?
For example - Lazy Spa's £130 one VS a £30 off Amazon? is it worth the extra £100?
I've only got the official one so I'm afraid I cannot comment. But in my experience you always get what you pay for and the official one is good.
I’ve got this version and my neighbours got the lazy spa one, no difference at all I’d say

Did I hear wrong? Or did the ambient temperature increase 2-3 degrees between tests?
Yes next day ambient temperature was a bit higher but not too much. The thermal cover does make a massive difference to retaining the heat
Anyone done a comparison test is it cheaper to turn off the heater in between use for a few day or keep on
I recently purchased one of these covers and it’s made a big difference, first day without it it dropped to 29 from 36 overnight, following night with it on it only dropped to 33. Now all I do is just let the tub run for a couple hours once a day and it keeps it maintained. I imagine a few days without running would lose more heat but a couple hours a day isn’t too bad
Id say you're losing some heat through the uncovered filter/pump.
Yes a little but then maybe it’s not designed to be covered incase it overheats

I don’t clip it down unless it’s really windy as they are very fiddly to unclip
