    I’ve had a lazy spa Miami for over a year. I use it every morning 365 days a year whatever the weather. I’m in it for about 30mins for exercising.we switch it off completely after use then switch it back on again before we go to bed about 11pm - it heats up to 38 degrees. We put 3 or 4 spa mini cleansing tablets in the dispenser every morning after use and clean the filter daily. Our water is crystal clear and we never bother with any other chemicals. We love our spa.

    Good video. My only argument with turning it off would be you have to turn it on 15 hours before you want to use it. For me having a tub allows me to use when I want to use -irrespective of time and not waiting for it to heat up. Each to their own though

      If you turn a hot tub off there is no water circulation or filtration. You can’t just throw in sanitizer in a tub with no flow and expect the water to be safe as well, you can’t just add chlorine when you feel like it. To keep it sanitized you have to put sanitizer in everyday to every other day and shock at least every other week if you have an ozonator. Once a week if not. Not to mention, unless you live in a warm climate you CANNOT turn off the t7b during cold weather.

    I've enclosed my hot spa in a gazebo. During the winter I cover the gazebo with military canvas stormsheets. The floor is insulated with 1 layer rubber matting purchased from B&Q for £10. The next step is a wrap foil insulation around the sides and definitely the top.

    Wow! This is a brilliant and incredibly well detailed and easy to understand video. I am lucky enough to own both a hot tub and an endless pool (10 ft x 20 ft) which has a motor to generate a current so that I can swim against it daily. (After swimming each day, I get in the hot tub.) It has been a learning curve to monitor my electricity bills and try to figure out how to adjust temperatures for daily usage. Having solar makes a huge difference in the warmer months especially. Your video is by far the best I've seen. It has taken me about a year of calculating and experimenting to be at a point where I could follow your explanations effortlessly and still benefit greatly because the information just "crystallized" for me. I am enlightened. Thank you!

    Very good advice Adam! We bought a Lay-Z-Spa about 8 weeks ago and had the same dilemma given the ridiculous electricity prices currently. Thankfully, also owning an electric car, we have a special tariff with Octopus which gives us electric at 5p per KWh between 12:30 and 4:30 so I have it come on at the same time as the car for that 4 hour period for the two nights prior to us using it. Yes it drops a couple of degrees during the day before use but it saves us a fortune in electric

    REALLY appreciate your analysis. ONE NOTE though: using DIY foil insulation you suggest in the "insulation" section (starting about minute 2) - that insulation (looks exactly like what is universally sold in hardware stores) is utter crap if exposed to much sun (as in the total tub cover shown - probably fine under tub out of the light). It degrades amazingly quickly. I used some to insulate under and next to a rooftop barrel I was using for solar heating of pumped hot tub water (pretty effective way to heat up tub water during sunny months - about April into October in CA, USA).
    After just a year exposed to lots of sun (but only tangentially) and the aluminum foil (Mylar probably) degraded to flakes and blew away in the wind! A real mess and after about a year utterly useless or, since it cost money and time to use it, worse than worthless. I don't think it saved much energy at all anyway.

  • @shirleyjones9558

    I have insulated mine all the way around and thd top also. Instead of buying one of those inflatable lids that cost a fortune I bought an inflatable round lilo for £10 off ebay. Does exactly the same and on my 3rd summer now and no holes whatsoever. I also turn mine off after use as can't predict the British weather and if I think I'm going to go in it the next day just turn it on around 7pm it's great up to 38 by 10am

    An instantaneous/ tankless propane heater with a submersible pump could be a good addition that would pay for itself in energy savings. It would provide a cheap and quick reheat. The tub could then be kept at lower temperatures and reheated for use each time.

  • @HandmadeMatt
    @HandmadeMatt 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    Great videos Adam. Thanks. I use my hot tub every night at the moment. In this cold weather I can save lots of electricity by not using the bubble feature for long periods of time. It uses ambient cold air and cools the hot tub very quickly. Additionally rather than leave the tub heater set to 40 degrees all the time I leave it set to whatever temperature the water is when I finish my soak, normally somewhere around 36 degrees. It's not worth re-heating it immediately because it will then have to maintain this higher temperature for about 23 hours until I next jump in. It's going to have to do that re-heat anyway so I just turn it up a couple of hours before I jump in again the following day. Occasionally I have topped the tub up from a hose pipe connected to a hot tap in my house for quick reheat or to extend a session in the evening with the bubbles on. Our domestic hot water from the boiler is much cheaper. Luxury. (Every time I re-fill the tub I start off with domestic hot water too.)

    I am currently filling our tub for the first time this year. We are low / intermittent (use every few weeks) users and used to leave it on permanently during our "April to October' season. We decided to start late this year and I will now turn OFF between sessions. Really useful info - Thanks Adam.
    This years 'winterisation' included using a home made cover - made from a plastic damp proof course sheet. It kept a lot of water and dirt out and I will definitely be using it during periods of inactivity and over next winter.
    My next places to explore are solar panels to warm water, combined with a small 12 volt PV panel and pump to reduce water heating costs.

    Great video mate. My strategy has been to turn the hot tub off overnight in which time it cools to around 28C and then turn it back on early in the morning and it’s usually back up to around 36/37 by lunchtime. Obviously these temps and times are weather dependant. We use the tub multiple times per day so it sounds like from what you’re saying I would be better to keep it on overnight and not let the temp drop so much. Maybe set it to around 33/34 and only have to heat it a few degrees again in the morning. I don’t have any insulation under or around it but it is fairly sheltered where it is situated. However my next step should definitely be to use some foil insulation underneath.

    No mention of having to keep the water filtering and being mixed with the chlorine, there's a lot of water and it takes time for it to circulate, the initial tips about insulation and best energy provider are sound but you could cause all sorts of trouble having unsafe water and to random chemical concentration. Keep it running, keep checking your chemicals.

      As long as the water has sufficient chlorine levels, it should be fine in the pump for some time - at least days, and possibly weeks, at a time.

    So far I have only insulated the bottom, the day we picked it up I spent $150CDN on 2” thick foam R10 insulation and a roll of reflective insulation to go on top of the foam, probably overkill but wanted the bottom insulated the most. Still considering wrapping the outside with reflective insulation as well. I keep it at 96 deg F/35.5 deg C during the week when I am gone and my fiancé uses it occasionally, the days she knows she wants to use it I use my phone app and turn it all the way up to 104F/40C about 5hrs before she needs it then turn down again once she’s out. Would love to have a power meter that keeps a total usage stored connected to the plug just to see what is working best.

    Have just got a Miami and worried about electricity charges. Really helpful video explaining options but tub is used once a day at about 1400hrs so with cheap night electricity would it be possible/sensible to run it at 40 from 2200 to 0700 and then off until being used. After use leave it off until that evening and again turn it back on at 2200. What’s the flaw!

    I often empty half the water and fill it with hot water from the tap to get it to 40. Am I saving money as I’m not using the hot tub heater only gas?

    Can you possibly advise with the below.
    How long should the pump be left on for dependant upon use?
    Thanks again

      You don't really need to leave the pump on except for when heating. Some people like to leave it on for a couple of hours after using to give it a chance to clear out any debris, but it's not essential.

    Hi Adam, have liked and subscribed.......and on this video made notes. One question I can't seem to find the answer to. Now the answer may seem obvious but I'd like to hear it confirmed........Once the heater has got everything up to your chosen temperature (e.g 38 degrees), the red heating light turns green to confirm that. Does this now mean that it is no longer using 2KWH of electricity? I ask because, other than the change from red to green, the pump unit still appears to be on and humming in the same way? From experience I expect to hear some thermal cut-off solenoid click (but I don't) - much thanks in advance.

    Great video , wouldn’t the water go bad if you turn it off for 3 days at a time ? I thought it had to be moving and at a certain temperature to stop bacteria growing, also this depends on time of year I’m guessing as can’t turn it off when it’s cold in case it ices up and can crack the plastic or pipes? X

    What about the filter???? Aside from the heater it needs to filter the water for at least 8 hours a day so how do you do this with a lazy spa??? Thanks

    • @SailingAquila
      @SailingAquila  ปีที่แล้ว

      It's a good idea to leave on for a few hours or overnight after use, but don't feel it's necessary to use it for 8 hours every day if you've not been using the tub. As long as your chlorine levels are ok, you can leave it without constantly filtering the water.

    Hi, Thanks for creating these videos - everything Ive learnt about my laz y spa Ive learnt from you! I just wondered whether you have any advice for using the timer when it comes to heating? Im confused as to what the time means - if I set it for 3 hours does that mean it will start heating in 3 hours or will it heat for 3 hours from the time I set it?? Thanks

    • @petergwilliams
      @petergwilliams 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Katie. I'm trying to get my head around it as well - would appreciate a video! If you've also got a Lay-z-spa I _think_ that (after hitting the timer button) the first number you give it is how long you want it to heat for and (second push) the next number is the delay, so, in how many hours you want the heating to start. However I think it didn't work for me because I already had the heater element on so it just ignored it completely. I think you might need to start the timer with the heater off. I'll give it another go tonight...

    Hi Adam, great videos which I used to set up our Maldives Hydrojet Pro and keep it running spot. We really need some advice on running costs and cost savings. We use our hot tub at least 3-4 times a week on an evening and have tried different timings to get the hot tub up to 40 degrees ready for when we use it on an evening. Steadily our electricity bill has shot up, we expected an increase but it's costing us about £100-£130 a month!!!! Our hot tub is boxed in with a timber surround to keep it out the wind, we're using a bubble wrap thermal blanket under our inflatable lid and we even have the pump unit insulated. We leave our hot off over night and with all the above the temp only drops to around 32 ish degrees. Having left the filter running all the time we then turn the heater on around 8am knowing that by 7pm ish it's at full temp and ready to use Can you give any advice as our costs are getting ridiculously expensive. Thanks, Mike.

    • @SailingAquila
      @SailingAquila  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sounds like you're doing most things right and the cost is unavoidable.
      You could try turning it fully off overnight. It'll get to run for a few hours anyway during the daytime when reheating so plenty of time for the filter to get to work.
      The last resort would be to consider getting solar panels. They're a good investment anyway if you're planning on staying in the same house for the foreseeable future.

    • @mikecraig9797
      @mikecraig9797 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@SailingAquila Thanks for the reply Adam, we've already got solar panels installed but at this time of year they don't produce a great deal. I'll try turning it off altogether at night. I actually didn't realise that was an option and thought the filter had to be running all the time as part of the cleaning process. Thanks, Mike.

  • @davidbenpark
    @davidbenpark 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Does 'turn off' mean just the heat, or everything else aswell (the pump/filter too)?

    • @SailingAquila
      @SailingAquila  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I mean turn off completely including the filter.
      It's a good idea to let the pump run for a few hours or overnight to help remove any bits, then clean the filter and check the chemicals. As long as you monitor the water occasionally, you can leave it turned off for days or even a week or two without any problems.
