I’ve had a lazy spa Miami for over a year. I use it every morning 365 days a year whatever the weather. I’m in it for about 30mins for exercising.we switch it off completely after use then switch it back on again before we go to bed about 11pm - it heats up to 38 degrees. We put 3 or 4 spa mini cleansing tablets in the dispenser every morning after use and clean the filter daily. Our water is crystal clear and we never bother with any other chemicals. We love our spa.
Very good advice Adam! We bought a Lay-Z-Spa about 8 weeks ago and had the same dilemma given the ridiculous electricity prices currently. Thankfully, also owning an electric car, we have a special tariff with Octopus which gives us electric at 5p per KWh between 12:30 and 4:30 so I have it come on at the same time as the car for that 4 hour period for the two nights prior to us using it. Yes it drops a couple of degrees during the day before use but it saves us a fortune in electric
Wow! This is a brilliant and incredibly well detailed and easy to understand video. I am lucky enough to own both a hot tub and an endless pool (10 ft x 20 ft) which has a motor to generate a current so that I can swim against it daily. (After swimming each day, I get in the hot tub.) It has been a learning curve to monitor my electricity bills and try to figure out how to adjust temperatures for daily usage. Having solar makes a huge difference in the warmer months especially. Your video is by far the best I've seen. It has taken me about a year of calculating and experimenting to be at a point where I could follow your explanations effortlessly and still benefit greatly because the information just "crystallized" for me. I am enlightened. Thank you!
Yep, agreed. We used to turn it on and off every day and got a huge electricity bill. By leaving it on at a lower temperature we still have a big bill, but its not as bad as before!!! ;-)
Good video. My only argument with turning it off would be you have to turn it on 15 hours before you want to use it. For me having a tub allows me to use when I want to use -irrespective of time and not waiting for it to heat up. Each to their own though
If you turn a hot tub off there is no water circulation or filtration. You can’t just throw in sanitizer in a tub with no flow and expect the water to be safe as well, you can’t just add chlorine when you feel like it. To keep it sanitized you have to put sanitizer in everyday to every other day and shock at least every other week if you have an ozonator. Once a week if not. Not to mention, unless you live in a warm climate you CANNOT turn off the t7b during cold weather.
That was exactly my thoughts as knowing about the heat stimulation of fungus and to a slightly lesser extent bacteria there is a great danger in turning it off for 3 days and just turning it on as he advises unless you want to spend a much bigger amount of time cleaning and sanitising the great additional fungal risk
This is good advice, and I’m very glad I found this great video. As someone who travels about every week, I’ll be turning mine off completely on the evenings before I fly.
I am currently filling our tub for the first time this year. We are low / intermittent (use every few weeks) users and used to leave it on permanently during our "April to October' season. We decided to start late this year and I will now turn OFF between sessions. Really useful info - Thanks Adam. This years 'winterisation' included using a home made cover - made from a plastic damp proof course sheet. It kept a lot of water and dirt out and I will definitely be using it during periods of inactivity and over next winter. My next places to explore are solar panels to warm water, combined with a small 12 volt PV panel and pump to reduce water heating costs.
I have mine set to heat up between 12 midnight and 5am as this is the cheap rate on my EV tariff (EDF or Octopus) quick workout then dip in the hot tub, starts the day great!
Seems like good advice except the part when you said don't use it in winter. Perhaps look at Scandinavian countries where hot tubs are used all year round and more so in winter, for more tips on insulation and heating.
An instantaneous/ tankless propane heater with a submersible pump could be a good addition that would pay for itself in energy savings. It would provide a cheap and quick reheat. The tub could then be kept at lower temperatures and reheated for use each time.
I have insulated mine all the way around and thd top also. Instead of buying one of those inflatable lids that cost a fortune I bought an inflatable round lilo for £10 off ebay. Does exactly the same and on my 3rd summer now and no holes whatsoever. I also turn mine off after use as can't predict the British weather and if I think I'm going to go in it the next day just turn it on around 7pm it's great up to 38 by 10am
I use my new lay z spa in winter as it has freeze shield. It’s used every other day so I keep it at 36 degrees then push up to 39 a few hours before going in it.
Perfect! Thank you very much for all the technically - very important! In the U.S. we have the lowest cost per kw between midnight and 5 am - if we choose the perk plan. We charge our Tesla that way too. :) Your videos are very clear, straight to the point = valuable. Cheers!
i significantly save money on energy by keeping my hot tub in a round portable greenhouse. the round ones allow more solar heat in keeping the air temp nice and steamy all year. benifit i get a sauna and hot tub from one unit. i am in michigan USA and the air temp in winter averages around 20degrees Feherinhiet but inside the greenhouse (i call it my bubble) the air stays 60 degrees all winter. its very nice to enjoy on cold nights
I use a coupe of those heavy moving blankets atop the air lid for my Intex 4-person hot tub. About 4-5 kwH per day less power consumption. 104F, 24/7 operation, about 7 kWh power use over 24 hours.
All your hot tub videos are so helpful and full of excellent advice. I am receiving my lay z spa Hawaii this week and I have done lots of research using all your videos. Thank you very much, Jim
This was so handy and a great insight into hot tub economy, I'm putting mine in a well ventilated conservatory so hoping for no big drops in temperature and all year round use. Thanks again.
Great videos Adam. Thanks. I use my hot tub every night at the moment. In this cold weather I can save lots of electricity by not using the bubble feature for long periods of time. It uses ambient cold air and cools the hot tub very quickly. Additionally rather than leave the tub heater set to 40 degrees all the time I leave it set to whatever temperature the water is when I finish my soak, normally somewhere around 36 degrees. It's not worth re-heating it immediately because it will then have to maintain this higher temperature for about 23 hours until I next jump in. It's going to have to do that re-heat anyway so I just turn it up a couple of hours before I jump in again the following day. Occasionally I have topped the tub up from a hose pipe connected to a hot tap in my house for quick reheat or to extend a session in the evening with the bubbles on. Our domestic hot water from the boiler is much cheaper. Luxury. (Every time I re-fill the tub I start off with domestic hot water too.)
There should be a calculator for the thermodynamics where you could input stats like how often you use it, temp set, outside temperature etc... And it would tell you best method for efficiency
Good video and information, the only additional consideration here is maybe the impact on water quality and chemical considerations during all these scenarios. Most hot tubs have circulated water function (without heat) which will help keep the water moving a little but it’s the temperature changes that I’m more concerned about.
REALLY appreciate your analysis. ONE NOTE though: using DIY foil insulation you suggest in the "insulation" section (starting about minute 2) - that insulation (looks exactly like what is universally sold in hardware stores) is utter crap if exposed to much sun (as in the total tub cover shown - probably fine under tub out of the light). It degrades amazingly quickly. I used some to insulate under and next to a rooftop barrel I was using for solar heating of pumped hot tub water (pretty effective way to heat up tub water during sunny months - about April into October in CA, USA). After just a year exposed to lots of sun (but only tangentially) and the aluminum foil (Mylar probably) degraded to flakes and blew away in the wind! A real mess and after about a year utterly useless or, since it cost money and time to use it, worse than worthless. I don't think it saved much energy at all anyway.
Another great video Adam. Just fired ours up this week for new season and first night forgot to switch it off, so began to wonder if I was wasting energy, this video helped me think thro the strategy I need. Also having solar panels the recent sunny weather has been a bonus. I bought the Lay-Z-Spa ground insulation panels so hopefully that helps. Thanks again, Hugh
I use mine 2 weekends a month Fri, Sat, Sun then empty it, It takes approx 1 hour to refill with tub with fresh, clean hot water from my garden hose connected to Hot Water tap in my kitchen. 1hr of Gas is FAR cheaper than any Electric option, and it never has water older than 3 days too....
This has been very helpful. I have eco 7 electric. So I will try to use heater during the night. I use once a day (sat, sun, mom &/tues) So will maintain a 35 degree heat. I then have a 3 day gap (we’d, thurs and fri) each week when not in use. So will turn off completely after use Tuesday , turning back on Friday night ready for sat use. (I hope I got that all correct !)
Looking at using foil backed foam sleeping camping roll Mats X 3 to insulate sides of 1.8m diameter inflated hot tub... Question is ... Would you put foil inside or out ... So would be foam side be against the tub wall or should it be foil side? n why?
Thanks for much for your hot tub videos! We have just got a Bali and I had absolutely no clue on how to setup and whether to turn off or keep on! Subscribed! 👍🏻
Great video mate. My strategy has been to turn the hot tub off overnight in which time it cools to around 28C and then turn it back on early in the morning and it’s usually back up to around 36/37 by lunchtime. Obviously these temps and times are weather dependant. We use the tub multiple times per day so it sounds like from what you’re saying I would be better to keep it on overnight and not let the temp drop so much. Maybe set it to around 33/34 and only have to heat it a few degrees again in the morning. I don’t have any insulation under or around it but it is fairly sheltered where it is situated. However my next step should definitely be to use some foil insulation underneath.
Top man and there was me keeping it on all the time lol when I only use it just 1 a week now and turn heater off and keep filter on I turn the heater on at 9pm at night and by eary afternoon its ready for me to get in
Thanks for this. Really helpful! In summer I use it quite regularly, in winter not as much - that being said, I want to make sure that the water stays filtered and clean so would like to run the pump on its own. Do you have recommendations for frequency and length of time to run the pump without the heat to keep the chlorine up and the water clear please? Thank you
this is my concern. My hot tub person on our vacation rental says to keep it on 24/7 for our guests to keep it cycling the pumps and filtering and clean.
Good video but im on debatable as iv been told its better too run the circulation filter full time even when the heater is off so the water is crystal clear with the appropriate chemicals put in . I put in 3 tablets in every 3-4 days and had to say i even went 9months before water change and didnt really need it but did it all the same anyway and its been 5 years now plus and the heater has just packed in ,was going to get it fixed but was again told weve done well and thats the overall time limit for these so just brought a new heater and came here to remember how to install it again
My recommendation if used once or twice a week is get a connector and fill with hot water from the mains. Instant hot water and very little electricity used
Great video , wouldn’t the water go bad if you turn it off for 3 days at a time ? I thought it had to be moving and at a certain temperature to stop bacteria growing, also this depends on time of year I’m guessing as can’t turn it off when it’s cold in case it ices up and can crack the plastic or pipes? X
So far I have only insulated the bottom, the day we picked it up I spent $150CDN on 2” thick foam R10 insulation and a roll of reflective insulation to go on top of the foam, probably overkill but wanted the bottom insulated the most. Still considering wrapping the outside with reflective insulation as well. I keep it at 96 deg F/35.5 deg C during the week when I am gone and my fiancé uses it occasionally, the days she knows she wants to use it I use my phone app and turn it all the way up to 104F/40C about 5hrs before she needs it then turn down again once she’s out. Would love to have a power meter that keeps a total usage stored connected to the plug just to see what is working best.
When the filtration isn't on for the time it's off inbetween uses Say few days will water still be OK to.use . Are the tablets enough to keep water safe and fresh 🤔 I'm worried it may be green x
Hi Adam, have liked and subscribed.......and on this video made notes. One question I can't seem to find the answer to. Now the answer may seem obvious but I'd like to hear it confirmed........Once the heater has got everything up to your chosen temperature (e.g 38 degrees), the red heating light turns green to confirm that. Does this now mean that it is no longer using 2KWH of electricity? I ask because, other than the change from red to green, the pump unit still appears to be on and humming in the same way? From experience I expect to hear some thermal cut-off solenoid click (but I don't) - much thanks in advance.
Had my hot tub a couple of weeks, electric bill shot up by £20 a week! Eeeek. I will follow your suggestions Adam and hope I can lower the running cost. Thank you from sunny Plymouth!
Hi Adam Thanks for your informational videos, I have found them to be useful. Can you possibly advise with the below. How long should the pump be left on for dependant upon use? Thanks again Kev
You don't really need to leave the pump on except for when heating. Some people like to leave it on for a couple of hours after using to give it a chance to clear out any debris, but it's not essential.
Have just got a Miami and worried about electricity charges. Really helpful video explaining options but tub is used once a day at about 1400hrs so with cheap night electricity would it be possible/sensible to run it at 40 from 2200 to 0700 and then off until being used. After use leave it off until that evening and again turn it back on at 2200. What’s the flaw!
If you turn off the heat and filter, what do you do about testing the water and maintaining chemicals? Or do you not have to do the daily chlorine dose and then just shock dose it a few hours before you want to use it?
That was well spoken n easy to understand, thank you, I'm struggling with the chemicals, also when I used de scaler I noticed a rusty colour in the water only a bit but it was greesy any ideas please?
Hi I enjoyed your video. Do you turn the unit completely off when not in it, I am concerned about the chemicals not circulating to keep the ph, etc. right. Also regarding a floating chlorinator, do you advise? I live in the US, so I want to find out the cost per senario per your calculations...thank you!🙂
Hi Adam love all your videos. Super helpful. I heat my hot tub to 38 then when I take the lid off to go in the heat slips super quick to 34 which is too cold. I have insulation on the bottom and it's hot weather so can't figure out if this is normal with lay z spas?
Hi Adam, great videos which I used to set up our Maldives Hydrojet Pro and keep it running spot. We really need some advice on running costs and cost savings. We use our hot tub at least 3-4 times a week on an evening and have tried different timings to get the hot tub up to 40 degrees ready for when we use it on an evening. Steadily our electricity bill has shot up, we expected an increase but it's costing us about £100-£130 a month!!!! Our hot tub is boxed in with a timber surround to keep it out the wind, we're using a bubble wrap thermal blanket under our inflatable lid and we even have the pump unit insulated. We leave our hot off over night and with all the above the temp only drops to around 32 ish degrees. Having left the filter running all the time we then turn the heater on around 8am knowing that by 7pm ish it's at full temp and ready to use Can you give any advice as our costs are getting ridiculously expensive. Thanks, Mike.
Sounds like you're doing most things right and the cost is unavoidable. You could try turning it fully off overnight. It'll get to run for a few hours anyway during the daytime when reheating so plenty of time for the filter to get to work. The last resort would be to consider getting solar panels. They're a good investment anyway if you're planning on staying in the same house for the foreseeable future.
@@SailingAquila Thanks for the reply Adam, we've already got solar panels installed but at this time of year they don't produce a great deal. I'll try turning it off altogether at night. I actually didn't realise that was an option and thought the filter had to be running all the time as part of the cleaning process. Thanks, Mike.
Have a spare hotwater feed from washing machine just run pipe to hottube set boiler to 40 oc and fill so the combi boiler heats water at first fill then just remove half water then refill
@@SailingAquila most new washing machines only use cold feed so there's a hot feed just doing nothing get washing machine hose cut off one end connect the other to washer tape hot then put hole in wall then buy outside garden tap and connect the cut end to that 😀😀😀
No mention of having to keep the water filtering and being mixed with the chlorine, there's a lot of water and it takes time for it to circulate, the initial tips about insulation and best energy provider are sound but you could cause all sorts of trouble having unsafe water and to random chemical concentration. Keep it running, keep checking your chemicals.
You risk build up bacteria in the pipes, and spitting out sludge when you do fire it up again, meaning you'd be spending more money on refilling, cleaning and reheating the water
Layzspa Vancouver . When the heater goes off/ green, reached set temperature, am I supposed to leave the filtration pump on all the time? I followed adams good advice and will use tub most days, reduce heat after use to 35 and test on increase heat to 39 in am.
Followed your advice 1 yr ago. It was EXCELLENT advice. Our bill never even went up a single dollar. Not kidding. Thank yo thank you thank you!

Helpful information. Unfortunately with a lazy spa you cant set a timer on it to come on a certain times which is annoying even with a timer plug.

Do you have recommendations for frequency and length of time to run the pump without the heat to keep the chlorine up and the water clear please? Thank you
this is my concern. My hot tub person on our vacation rental says to keep it on 24/7 for our guests to keep it cycling the pumps and filtering and clean.
Given me lots to think about... Cheers mate great video 👍
Really helpful, thanks very much dude!
Top video as always Adam.
My recommendation if used once or twice a week is get a connector and fill with hot water from the mains. Instant hot water and very little electricity used
Thanks very much!
Does this not mean that you also need to empty out the cold water before you add the hot water?!
Just do a 50% water change
Merci beaucoup Adam des bons conseils que je vais adopter.
Bloody good video. Top man
Very informative video, thanks Adam.
Very useful and informative video. Thanks
Nicely done, cheers
very useful video. I am still confused about the "rest" and "ready" function.
Awesome video adam
Amazing video really informative and helpful thank you for the advice
Hey Adam. Can you run the hydros and air bubbles at same time. I know you can’t run hydros and heat together. Thanks
Lovely Plymouth. How strange, small world 👍🏼
This is really useful, thank you
Hi Adam, have liked and subscribed.......and on this video made notes.
Did it help?
Excellent information, thank you!
Too be fair we really needa worry about this only for 2 months then when winter comes you put it away lol
Hi Adam
Thanks for your informational videos, I have found them to be useful.
Can you possibly advise with the below.
How long should the pump be left on for dependant upon use?
Thanks again
Kev
You don't really need to leave the pump on except for when heating. Some people like to leave it on for a couple of hours after using to give it a chance to clear out any debris, but it's not essential.
Very interesting , great video.
Brilliant advice thank you watch it before I got my tub and recap now when I’ve got it thank you so much 🙏🙏x
When you turn off the spa, wouldn't that make your water quality go down since there is no circulation going on?
Have just got a Miami and worried about electricity charges. Really helpful video explaining options but tub is used once a day at about 1400hrs so with cheap night electricity would it be possible/sensible to run it at 40 from 2200 to 0700 and then off until being used. After use leave it off until that evening and again turn it back on at 2200. What’s the flaw!
I used to pump mine into combi boiler into the cold feed and back out through hot water tap not tried in my new boiler
Exactly what type of insulation is to be around around the spa?
If you turn off the heat and filter, what do you do about testing the water and maintaining chemicals? Or do you not have to do the daily chlorine dose and then just shock dose it a few hours before you want to use it?
If there was a way to save money on gas and electricity, would you want to know about it?
That was well spoken n easy to understand, thank you, I'm struggling with the chemicals, also when I used de scaler I noticed a rusty colour in the water only a bit but it was greesy any ideas please?
Hi I enjoyed your video. Do you turn the unit completely off when not in it, I am concerned about the chemicals not circulating to keep the ph, etc. right. Also regarding a floating chlorinator, do you advise? I live in the US, so I want to find out the cost per senario per your calculations...thank you!🙂
Spot on, very helpful, many thanks
This is very helpful Adam..
I love your Explorer!
Thanks for the advice. very easy to understand.
Well described. I’m buying a hot tub. Thank you for you explanation.
Say for example I set my temperature for 25* do I keep the heater button on or turn it off and it will kick in itself to maintain the 25*
Hi Adam, brilliant video ty. Can you tell me if I should leave the pump/filter on all the time please ?
Soooooo helpful. Thank you!
Amazing tips
Should I leave the filter running when I have turned off the heating to keep it clean?
You can leave it running for a few hours or overnight to clean it after use, then it's fine to turn off completely.
@@SailingAquila thank you.
Hi thx for that. If i switch the tub off do i always keep the filter on? Pls
Always keep filter on Fiona
Have a spare hotwater feed from washing machine just run pipe to hottube set boiler to 40 oc and fill so the combi boiler heats water at first fill then just remove half water then refill
That's a helpful tip, especially on the first fill as you can add chemicals immediately rather than having to heat up to 20 degrees.
@@SailingAquila most new washing machines only use cold feed so there's a hot feed just doing nothing get washing machine hose cut off one end connect the other to washer tape hot then put hole in wall then buy outside garden tap and connect the cut end to that 😀😀😀
Takes 45 mins to fill a 1.22p in gas
