I like how this guy called Edge Sense "half-baked" and "completely forgettable gimmick" when it does exactly what it's supposed to and what it's advertised to do, but didn't bother to say the same about the non-customizable Bixby button on the S8 that activates an actually half-baked and entirely redundant feature
Former Z3 owner here: I got very used to pushing the shutter button on the side to access the camera/video; much easier than unlocking and going to the app. I feel the U11 offers the same ease of use for specific apps, and look forward to getting mine soon.
you're telling me there's something easier than squeezing the phone to take a screen shot? lol reviewers complain about everything they're aren't used to
VTEC kick in Having to use two hands when standing in the street to take a screen shot is easier and better than squeezing the phone with one hand because holding something tighter makes it easier to fall. I absolutely agree because if Chewbacca lived on Endor, it makes no sense!
Dan, the phone comes with a usb to aux adapter, you can use it for your car. I get that this can be inconveniat with headphone and other pereferals, but if you use it only in your car, I dont find this to be a problem.
Where do all these reviewers live, Southern California? Squeezing the phone to start the camera and take a picture is a godsend for anyone living in Canada for most of the year, or anywhere that doesn't have a mouse living in a castle. This review is a challenge to my honor. The gloves are on my friend!
"when I got into my car, I couldn't plug into the aux" -- HTC includes a dongle in the package, so you can connect headphones, aux, whatever. Also, the Galaxy S8's back is also a fingerprint/smudge magnet. I really don't get all the HTC hate - they've been out of the game lately, but this phone looks really solid.
Jamie Clarke-Dakin because he( and he has good cimpany) have been brainwashed. The only phones they go gaga over are the Samsung buggy phones or IPhone.. The fix is in unfortunately HTC is being ran out of the business and we the consumer will be the ones to suffer.
The squeeze feature makes a lot of sense to me. Being able to activate any shortcut by pressing a large surface of the phone that you can feel without having to look at could be quite useful.
not fair to give a 9 for the galaxy s8 just for the screen and give an 8 for the HTC U11. This one got better battery life, better performance, better camera, better sound, better speakers, better software... the Samsung got a 18/9 screen that's it. we will see if the Samsung will be still snappy in 5 months or get the latest version of Android...
akbar faisal you act like the screen is just another gimmick. The screen is honestly one of the most important components of a phone. You look at it constantly, and it's the basic premise of using the phone. The reason people prefer the Galaxy s8 is because the screen is incredibly appealing to look at, which makes people want to use it more. Sure the htc u11 may have slightly better battery life and be slightly faster, but there's no selling point to it.
Trans1000 18/9 aspect ratio screen is a gimmick for me. future will proof that this aspect ratio will die soon. 16/9 will rise a long time but with some less bezel. for me more appealing features on the HTC than Samsung. by the way I prefer the oled technology and the color accuracy on the Samsung.
akbar faisal the 18:9 aspect ratio isn't the only thing about the screen. It's got incredibly small bezels, vibrant bright amoled, amazing contrast, and edge to edge which makes it feel immersive. I don't think 18:9 will die out any time soon
Trans1000 I know about the colors accuracy and the oled technology👍👍 but I think this aspect ratio will die soon. this is gimmicky sorry dude. why they don't use a 16/9 aspect ratio with those small bezels??? don't see the others manufacturers following this size .
Anthony Turner it's not marketing because the htc one M7 didn't have that great of marketing but it sold pretty well because htc actually put effort into making it great in hardware and software and hasn't put nearly the effort since then. It's almost as if they're purposely trying to kill off their brand which sucks.
HTC had some really solid devices back in 2012/2013 with the One X and M7 with great build quality and designs, but I believe once Samsung got the same phone on all major US carriers with S3, it's been hard for HTC. Samsung stopped making different versions of the same phone and stuck with one uniform flagship like Apple, then they really stepped up the marketing to maintain marketshare and with the S6 in 2015, finally had a premium design, consumers lost a reason to care for HTC anymore. It's difficult to compete on price on the high end and hardware design when there's Chinese companies offering comparable phones with better prices.
Htc: "Guys we need to have a new feature that nobody has ever used." Product manager:" How about infinity display?" Htc:" No we don't have the tech and Samsung won't even let us use their AMOLED." Product manager:" How about pressure sensor?" Htc:" IPhone already uses that *on its screen*. It's really straight forward, but not many ppl use that too." Product manager:" How about putting those damn sensors on the sides, and we call it *squeeze mode* ?!!!" Htc: " BING-fuckin-O!"
all these tech reviewers who are complaining about the missing headphone jack. 1. they all have bluetooth headphone laying around. 2. shouldnt they be about the future of tech? why are they holding so strong on to dated tech from the past ?
I love everything about HTC U11 but the only thing I hate is lack of all aluminum body which is the best feature of any smartphone for me. love my HTC One m8 tooooo much to replace it with a fragile glass back phone. my legendary HTC One m8 still performing excellent after more than 3 years of super heavy use without any lag and never given me any problems in over 3 years not even a frozen screen
Got my Amazing Silver U11 today! And I get to try it as well with the new JBL Reflect Aware Noise Canceling Earphones Type C. Match made in heaven when I'm at the gym. I don't mind them removing the headphone jack. I always support anything for the future of tech. In two to three years "probably", all phones will have type C or lightning plug for all the headphones. What's wrong with HTC moving that way along with Apple and Lenovo. Crossing my fingers LG and Samsung will do the same so all the haters/trolls will keep quiet. Usually people hate or dislike things that they do not understand. And the U11 got that treatment. For the review, I think it was just average. He said good and bad things, which is average for a tech review. Ups and downs. If you were looking for a detailed review. Lots of channels out there that seems legit. Now, time for my unboxing of my new sexy ass phone.
Can't judge yet since the past two days my apps were synching. But so far so good. I work at 8am and at 3pm my battery was at 75% which is good! And a heavy social media Spotify streaming user!
review felt rushed. not much in depth details, especially about the camera or low light performance. you could clearly tell the verge does not care about the phone they just wanted to do a review to get it out. which to most (ignorant) viewers translates to "this phone is not worth looking into" when it's actually a better performer than the already great s8 or most phones out regarding essential tasks. this is why I'm not subbed and never like it share your videos. you guys never satisfy your viewers and only feel excited when it's iPhone or the latest from Samsung.
This review was literally half the length of their S8 review, and had barely any substance at all. It's not like there's a plethora of new flagships nowadays to review, The Verge just doesn't care if it's not Apple or Samsung. That much is glaringly apparent.
Poor HTC. The camera gets the highest score on DxOMark and everyone's skeptical. The Pixel gets the (then) highest score on DxOMark and everyone praises it and runs with it. Guess they just have to do more.
I enjoy your reviews, right to the point and meat of things. My only complaint is, still a phone, rarely you guys mention call quality. Can you hear callers? can they hear you? is it muffled, did you drop calls? Anyway, good job.
Honestly don't understand people's grievances with no headphone ports on phones any more. I've had Bluetooth connectivity in my car stereo for year and Bluetooth headphones are more affordable than ever.
Have you tried using the squeeze for taking pictures and am hoping this will be a decent replacement for tapping the screen. I have never understood why Android/iOS devices are still lacking a hardware button for taking pictures because clicking the screen is so much less intuitive then using a button on top. I still miss this feature from Windows Phone 7 using a short press for focus and a long press to take a picture was so natural and fluid.
You shouldn't have said that U11 is the traditional phone. HTC is starting to follow the step of Apple by maintaining the consistent resource and add perfect new feature one by one. Let's think about putting so much innovation, sometimes the hardware is not strong enough to run huge programmings with little power hardware. I believe the next generation of the phone, HTC will make the squeeze more comfortable in hands.
I think I finally figured the Verge out. praise the mediocre Android phones and complain about stupid things on a device like the pixel. this way people buy the mediocre Android phone that does not updated and end up saying that Android phones are for geeks and just go back to an iPhone.
Only available on Sprint? This phone will be a pass for a huge chunk of potential buyers. The average consumer is not looking for unlocked phones at full price, they are purchasing phones from carriers with monthly installment plans. Samsung has the android market in their pocket and HTC won't be making a dent, no matter how many people commenting on this video like the phone. HTC needs to get this phone to all carriers and market the phone better. That of course is only for the US market. I don't know how they are doing around the world.
Have been using HTC phones for last six years but the lack of headphone jack is a deal-breaker. And HTC were the first one to make fun of Apple when they dropped the headphone jack.
Well, it was extremely rushed, but in the few minutes he just said good things overall. For being the Verge, I'm impressed considering their last year perception of the "meh just a phone" when every other reviewer in general said very good things and ended being a great phone
Not sure why you'd want such a feature? Say a three-headed unicorn-llama walks across the street and is gone in 3 seconds. You want a short-cut to get your camera out faster than any other means of user interface. I wish so much that more handset manufacturers would feature quick-access tricks like this. If not outright camera shutter buttons on the side of the phone. It would be so easy too, just sneak it in between the volume rocker. It could double-up as a play-pause button for music.
htc u11 was tested and is the best camera on a smartphone currently, it got the grade of 90 in dxo mark test (Google pixel is the second, which got 89), so that's not just a very good camera, this is the best camera for smartphone! (thought worth to mention...)
I was a fan of HTC and I own an M8. To be honest, I truly believe that the U11 still has its usual advantage, a great software optimisation plus a smooth android experience compared to the S8s and the G6, or even most of the android phones out there. However in terms of design of the phone, it’s not as good as the software...Not because of the use of glass material which really really makes it look stunning, but what I’m talking about is the exterior design. I think HTC is capable of making a slightly better looking phone, a slightly more attractive and peculiar designed phone, but why they still using a similar “Poor use of space” design as the U Ultra on its true flagship device...
Indeed. U11 made me pretty excited when it came out. But today, nearly a month after the release, I think it is just a good phone with some new features. HTC sense used to be the best Android custom UI, also some HTC only software. However they killed the taste of HTC and put Google flavor instead. I can understand why HTC did this, because they work with Google deeply. Also Dot View!!!!!!! Dot View used to make HTC very unique, too!! I hope HTC can find a way to make their phones HTC again.
No headphone jack isn't annoying to me at all. I bought a pair of bluetooth headphones before I got my iPhone 7, and I haven't used the included adapter once
Ray Blvck if only the content had as much effort put into it, like I dunno, a real review that doesnt tick off all the same boxes every other big reviewer goes over including calling anything innovative a gimmick unless it's an Apple or Samsung gimmick, then it's innovative.
seeing as how alot of people only buy phones through carriers, I feel like the U11 sales will be hurt by this. It's an excellent phone, but it needs more carrier partners.
HTC be like, ay HTC U11 is already solid, you know what will make it better? A squeeze control. But there's no more space on the phone... Let's have some courage *removes headphone jack
HTC just don't do anything weird or useless. Just make a simple phone with a dope battery life, camera, and display. That's it. You're always so close....
I dont like the amount of time it takes to connect them (its small but still there), and they usually cost more for sound quality. I can get decent wired earbuds for $10
i might get this phone, i do think its probably the fastest phone with the sony xzp in the market right now. the bezels are not that big i mean its 74.5% screen to ratio which compare to iphone plus which is 65% screen to body ratiowith same screen size is not bad at all and i know is not as good as the s8 84% but everything else on this phone is better than the s8.
I would gladly Jump On Demand to this from my S8 if T-Mobile would carry it. I would love a phone with better audio, a solid DAC, and better RAM management. miss my V20. I would probably only miss the display on the S8.
No? Its better for the mayority of users. The screen on the S8 has several issues that people can/will get frustrated on. The curve does nothing to increase the image quality - it just cause more reflections, light bending and essentialy give you an area on both sides that is unusable.
Come on dude you can't argue the Galaxy S8 is the best phone on sell right now.. it's hardware is ahead of any phone currently on sale. Only thing the U11 has going for it is the software which the pixel and iPhone is still best in that regards. There's no huge selling point it's a great phone and it's $100 cheaper but it's not the "better" phone
VTEC kick in I am in audiophile. Much much better audio both headphone wise and speaker wise. comes with noise cancelling headphones inbox. Best camera on any Android smartphone and the most fluid experience beside pixel. It all depends on peoples taste.
There really seems to be a concerted effort to under sale this phone...He said that the HTC is probably the fastest phone out there next to Pixel. He says that the camera is really good. . Only thing new about S8 is screen. And that is enough to make it a better phone? Being able to squeeze the phone to launch certain apps is not only intuitive but a welcome change. Anything that can lessen the constant touching of the screen should not be considered a gimmick. ....but a Game Changer. The strange thing is I know many people who don't see that as a gimmick but see Samsung's screen as nothing more then a new coat of paint with the same buggy engine.
Definitely getting one.
Jason Lord lol that's typical of someone who replies like that to not be able to look past the physical asthetic of a product.
i don't know what people are complaining at, this phone looks beautiful
Alvin Z no it doesn't
Little Burgundy yes it does.
Then you say no it doesn't.
Then I say yes it does.
And in the end, nothing of value was gained.
Alvin Z it's ugly in my opinion
Back is, but front is hideous.
Alvin Z yeah agree I got mine in amazing silver and looks fabulous and also feels really sturdy
Nothing to complain about this phone, HTC in all its glory once again.
**no headphone jack**
Former Z3 owner here: I got very used to pushing the shutter button on the side to access the camera/video; much easier than unlocking and going to the app. I feel the U11 offers the same ease of use for specific apps, and look forward to getting mine soon.
There is an aux adapter that comes in the box
Ian Fong or i could buy a better phone that doesn't need and adapter
Trans1000 You have the freedome to do so, is anyone stoping you? btw, you cant buy a "better" phone for its price lol nice try trigly puff.
At least it's a gimmick that works well!
Navajeeth Nair 3D Touch works well..
VTEC kick in, it does...
you're telling me there's something easier than squeezing the phone to take a screen shot? lol reviewers complain about everything they're aren't used to
wait for iphone to do the same and everyone will call it revolutionary. LOL
lilmario0 yup Samsung’s swipe to capture is better without me happening to squeeze the damn thing risking dropping it
VTEC kick in Having to use two hands when standing in the street to take a screen shot is easier and better than squeezing the phone with one hand because holding something tighter makes it easier to fall. I absolutely agree because if Chewbacca lived on Endor, it makes no sense!
Mr. Xandman lol.. nailed it
Chewbacca defense
Respect on using my riddem at the end no credit doe :(
Dan, the phone comes with a usb to aux adapter, you can use it for your car. I get that this can be inconveniat with headphone and other pereferals, but if you use it only in your car, I dont find this to be a problem.
"The U11 may not beat Samsung or Apple in regards to it's camera".
Actually, yes it does. It beats both, and EVERY other phone on the market.
Where do all these reviewers live, Southern California? Squeezing the phone to start the camera and take a picture is a godsend for anyone living in Canada for most of the year, or anywhere that doesn't have a mouse living in a castle. This review is a challenge to my honor. The gloves are on my friend!
The squeezing feature would be useful in scenarios where you can't interact with your phone (when wearing gloves for example).
The Verge needs to work on not being so biased. WE DON'T CARE WHAT YOUR OPINION OF THE PHONE IS! Just accurately REVIEW the phone and its features.
"when I got into my car, I couldn't plug into the aux" -- HTC includes a dongle in the package, so you can connect headphones, aux, whatever. Also, the Galaxy S8's back is also a fingerprint/smudge magnet. I really don't get all the HTC hate - they've been out of the game lately, but this phone looks really solid.
if you want in depth you're in the wrong place
Explain how it's possible to fully review a phone in a mere 4 minutes? I'd like more info about a product which costs as much as my car...
Watch Flossy Carter and DetroitBorg
You need a new car my friend.
true xD
Devon Connelly I can assure you that my car is perfectly fine :)
Not buying a phone without a headphone jack, PERIOD END OF STORY
not fair to give a 9 for the galaxy s8 just for the screen and give an 8 for the HTC U11.
Trans1000 I know about the colors accuracy and the oled technology👍👍
but I think this aspect ratio will die soon. this is gimmicky sorry dude.
why they don't use a 16/9 aspect ratio with those small bezels???
don't see the others manufacturers following this size .
akbar faisal i personally like the 18:9. A lot better for multitasking and more space to scroll
the 4 microphone thing is a VERY unique feature and they are the reason why the google assistant launched at the end of the video
Every year it's "the best phone HTC has made in years" but nobody buys one.
Anthony Turner because it's overpriced for what they offer.
Anthony Turner currently it's cheaper than any flagship smartphone.
Anthony Turner it's not marketing because the htc one M7 didn't have that great of marketing but it sold pretty well because htc actually put effort into making it great in hardware and software and hasn't put nearly the effort since then. Anthony Turner I bought the 10.

Nice bed time story
all these tech reviewers who are complaining about the missing headphone jack. 1. they all have bluetooth headphone laying around. 2. shouldnt they be about the future of tech? why are they holding so strong on to dated tech from the past ?
Nikolas Boosfeld 👍👍👍
You can say that again
Mark 'Coy' Simon Quilantang how is battery life with you
Can't judge yet since the past two days my apps were synching. But so far so good. I work at 8am and at 3pm my battery was at 75% which is good! And a heavy social media Spotify streaming user!

Agree, that's why i never believe when they review the products, i'm just see their video for any news of tech.
Yep they do crap reviews... best to wait for those in dept reviews from trusted TH-camrs...
This review was literally half the length of their S8 review, and had barely any substance at all.
It's not like there's a plethora of new flagships nowadays to review, The Verge just doesn't care if it's not Apple or Samsung. That much is glaringly apparent.
For real. That review was half-baked and completely forgettable.
well said, it's really bugging me for years
Q... Without a phono headphone / aux out socket, how does one connect to a hi-fi amp using the phones DAC? I guess we don't.
Poor HTC. The camera gets the highest score on DxOMark and everyone's skeptical. The Pixel gets the (then) highest score on DxOMark and everyone praises it and runs with it. Guess they just have to do more.

I have one, I brought it for live music recording and it record's well and it is good for little distortion, it does not distort easily. like it..
+Kieran Westlake Westy - Stars VIP playing the background @ 3:07, nice of them to give the artist a shout out...
Honestly don't understand people's grievances with no headphone ports on phones any more. I've had Bluetooth connectivity in my car stereo for year and Bluetooth headphones are more affordable than ever.
Apple products are the biggest gimmick going...
My HTC One M7 just picked up that final "ok, Google" too and started searching lol
Have you guys released this "review"just because the phone comes out today in the US?? Looks like a half baked review...
Have you tried using the squeeze for taking pictures and am hoping this will be a decent replacement for tapping the screen. Ricky Murillo Right? Why don't Sprint users buy it unlocked, save some money.
Traditonal smartphone without a headphone jack!?!
Marcel Jonas It's a stupid trend now. All the Chinese companies like Xiaomi, Ulefone, LeEco etc...are ditching the headphone jack.
HTC is from Taiwan but it is basically an American company...
the only well known American brand is apple
and BLU
Red-Haired Shanks Wtf do you live behind the moon?
Have been using HTC phones for last six years but the lack of headphone jack is a deal-breaker. And HTC were the first one to make fun of Apple when they dropped the headphone jack.
Dan, use a Bluetooth receiver and connect it to the aux port. Thank me later.
no need, the htc u11 come packed with a usb to aux converter inside the box.
Mariano Galea but you're still doing it the old way, tethered.
Well, it was extremely rushed, but in the few minutes he just said good things overall. For being the Verge, I'm impressed considering their last year perception of the "meh just a phone" when every other reviewer in general said very good things and ended being a great phone
Literally the only issue with this review... Aux cord? I used to game in only 720p last year and I still had bluetooth in my car.
Not sure why you'd want such a feature?
Say a three-headed unicorn-llama walks across the street and is gone in 3 seconds. You want a short-cut to get your camera out faster than any other means of user interface. I wish so much that more handset manufacturers would feature quick-access tricks like this. If not outright camera shutter buttons on the side of the phone. i find that crossing the street while looking at the phone very funny!😂😂😂
htc u11 was tested and is the best camera on a smartphone currently, it got the grade of 90 in dxo mark test (Google pixel is the second, which got 89), so that's not just a very good camera, this is the best camera for smartphone! (thought worth to mention...)
this review feels so rushed
My main concern is the battery life. The luck of a headphone jack has never bothered me.
It feels like HTC is bringing a new phone every 3 weeks...
I was a fan of HTC and I own an M8. To be honest, I truly believe that the U11 still has its usual advantage, a great software optimisation plus a smooth android experience compared to the S8s and the G6, or even most of the android phones out there.
Mmmm... Not a review more like a first look.. At the end just a guy whining about Htc's squeeze feature.
No headphone jack isn't annoying to me at all. I bought a pair of bluetooth headphones before I got my iPhone 7, and I haven't used the included adapter once
Another video from the verge with top class production
Ray Blvck if only the content had as much effort put into it, like I dunno, a real review that doesnt tick off all the same boxes every other big reviewer goes over including calling anything innovative a gimmick unless it's an Apple or Samsung gimmick, then it's innovative.
I like his jean shirt. It looks like from Uniqlo, actually.
You're the best reciewer of smartphones...
that moment when Google assistant gets activated by the video.....
I can't wait to sea what the verge says about the all glass made iPhones that are coming out this year.
I came here to watch the verge trash HTC like they've done the past 3 years in a row
best camera on DxO mark, is it though?
May as well wait for OP5 or P-XL 2 imo
Also, wrong, the latest OS from Google is 7.1.2 on the public side, and 8.0 on the dev side ;p
love htc u11👍👍👍👍👍
seeing as how alot of people only buy phones through carriers, I feel like the U11 sales will be hurt by this. It's an excellent phone, but it needs more carrier partners.
If you want some gaming phone, I suggest this.
I love this design of HTC... That's all I love about the phone, but.
HTC be like, ay HTC U11 is already solid, you know what will make it better? A squeeze control. But there's no more space on the phone... Let's have some courage *removes headphone jack
"It can take good photos at MOST ANY lighting conditions." Which one is it then?????? (still love the review tbh lol)
Welcome to the apple life but FYI on apple it's not a problem because you have airpots that's really good
HTC just don't do anything weird or useless. Just make a simple phone with a dope battery life, camera, and display. That's it. You're always so close....
Nobody goes bluetooth for headphones? There are really cheap Bluetooth ones for like $20.
I dont like the amount of time it takes to connect them (its small but still there), and they usually cost more for sound quality. I can get decent wired earbuds for $10

You launched Google Assistant on my phone 🤣
No one uses Sprint in my area
A tech person still using aux jack in his car??
Terence Tai sounds ridiculous to me as well
Lee Michael he probably doesn’t have a car new enough with Bluetooth
Not all cars have bluetooth, you know
Change the stereo? Buy aux Bluetooth adapter or just change the outdated car lol
Sure....buy a new expensive car just because you bought a shitty phone without a headphone jack....the logic is strong with this one
"Google's own pixel" is built by Htc
damn that blue color
i might get this phone, i do think its probably the fastest phone with the sony xzp in the market right now. the bezels are not that big i mean its 74.5% screen to ratio which compare to iphone plus which is 65% screen to body ratiowith same screen size is not bad at all and i know is not as good as the s8 84% but everything else on this phone is better than the s8.
my ok Google launch when he said that
Don't cross the street looking at your phone lol
love the design.
TheEpiCool, if only the front had been less bezel...
I would gladly Jump On Demand to this from my S8 if T-Mobile would carry it. I would love a phone with better audio, a solid DAC, and better RAM management. miss my V20. I would probably only miss the display on the S8.
HTC already did the dual camera thing so that gimmick is off the design shelf.
is it better than S8?
Nomi Baloch no but it’s cheaper
How does a clear case cover up the color?
Albacko that one is as ridiculous as plugging an aux in the car,😂
Right? Like a tech reviewer doesnt use bluetooth
Albacko I think he meant it covers the color after getting scratched and hard to see through
bluetooth isnt more convenient than an aux at all
The latest Android version is not 7.1.1, it is 7.1.2 isn't it? I am running it on a "Non - Pixel" phone!
Be cool if this was the blueprint for the Pixel2.
2:20 Warp Stabilizer spotted LOL
HTC needs some sort of reboot, besides the Vive I don't get what they're doing with phones.
now thats a couch sitting.
Samsung cant hear you over their marketshare

This a very dense review wow. Maybe I'm just getting old.
He reviews smartphones like no other..
from ur last HTC review to now 😂
correction: OnePlus 3T is the current fastest Android
Xperia XZ Premium?
BRUH
They done goofed it this time
Just make a metal one and let that be the special thing about you.
I don't wanna squeze my phone.
Another Samsung paid reviewer. Damn
Poor usage of space
