I remember my first session. I had done gym for 7 years. And a purple belt who was very polite told me to show me my gym strength. He casually was about to pop my arm out within 15 seconds. And I'd like to think I was fairly strong. I was benching 140kgs for a full set at 78kgs. Boy did I get thrown around like a ragdoll. His hand grip was insane. I couldn't believe how strong he was for someone slim. And of course I gassed out in about 40 seconds anyway. Then a gifted 15 year old built like a truck tapped me out 5 times in one round. Its shocking to understand how little to nothing the average person knows, but they think they know and think they can do something on the ground against a trained opponent. I was deluded, it opened my eyes. Over a year down the track. Still stripe one. But man I feel so good.

I went to my friends class to try it out and I never understood how someone could get caught in a triangle choke prior to that. I got put in a triangle twice and after 3 rounds I felt like I had to throw up and pass out.

lol yea. i was telling an "out of shape" co worker that i was tapped several times by all the females in the class, and his response was "man, if i worked out for a month there aint no way a girl could tap me out!" lmao.......uh sir, you could work out for 5 years but if you dont get some grappling experience you WILL get tapped out by damn near everyone in the class, everynight. people are just delerious. Theyve ran these movies through their heads and think theyve created the muscle memory just by watching television......its some sad shit, but great for us!

I’m a straight gym bro converting to bjj, deadlift is 600lbs, bench is 325 and squat is 405. I’m 6 ft 214 lbs, I remember walking into a bjj gym the first time I was nervously excited, I couldn’t wait to impress everyone with my raw strength(atleast that’s what I thought) I had dudes that were literally 70lbs under me wrapping me up like a snake. I was getting submitted 5+ times per roll. Holy shit that drive home was depressing. My ego was shattered, but I was also extremely amazed and enthralled. How could such average looking dudes just assassinate me like that???? I HAD to learn! been going for three months now and I’m finally making progress! It also helps that the most badass individuals in the gym are also the nicest and make great teachers. Awesome way to make friends.

Same here, I competed in bodybuilding in my late teens, although I did boxing, kick boxing etc but no ground experience. So I always laugh at gym bros who act tough but don’t train in any combat sports. Once you get better in BJJ the strength will definitely help though.

I am the gym guy I guess. I started jiu jitsu 2 weeks ago and everyone compliments how strong I am literally every single day. I hardly know any jiu jitsu techniques, so they always whip me every single match, so my go-to move is to try to just bench press people off of me, lol. Or if they go for my neck to do some weird choke, I grab their hand and muscle it away. I mean what else am I supposed to do I don't know the fucking moves haha

    • @jedidoesjiujitsu3177
      @jedidoesjiujitsu3177  4 ปีที่แล้ว +50

I feel your pain brotha. In the spot you’re in you don’t know much technique, but since you’re a bigger guy no one wants to go easy with you.
My advice would be to focus on smaller aspects of the game; hiping out, framing and working smoother movements.
If you can add smoother technique to the strength you already have think of how good you’ll be.
      Keep your head up bro!

@@AdolfHitler-pm3lc Haven't missed a single day. It's been great, not only has my instructor been teaching me, but so have all the other people who I roll with. I learn something every match, and I am pretty much untappable by any blue belts, and can survive purple belts sometimes. I have learned how to triangle and armbar very well, but mostly my defense has improved. I have been tapped so freaking much that I can now notice when i'm about to get submitted a certain way. The way my defense has been so good is because every time I get tapped, I asked how they tapped me and what is the counter. My offense is terrible, but I know how to hold side control very, very well. I also only know one single sweep. It's still very hard for me to face big people 300lb+ because you need great jiu jitsu to beat them and strength isnt as helpful, lol.

Nice video. It just reminded me of something... Ages ago I was practicing judo and was just awarded a yellow belt a few weeks before it happened. I was slightly bigger than most of my peers and had a decent technique, so for people at the same level as me I was kind of a challenge. Then my instructor asked me to spar with a blue belt, and she just destroyed me. I spent most of the time on the ground. I wasn't even able to try and counter her moves that I was down on the tatami again, and again, and again. Years later I discovered that she kept practicing judo (I didn't) and took part to several international competitions (probably also won a European one, but I'm not sure).

Pro tip for perpetual injury sufferers by the way... start a regular program of stability and flexibility focused strength and conditioning. Calisthenics work great and it doesn't have to be a lot, a few minutes a day or a couple hours a week make a massive difference. Took me two dislocated shoulders, and a number of minor low back and knee injuries to get me committed to doing the homework.

Yep, I'm the cross between patient and old guy. Though the latter causes former. Years in Judo, torn knees, shoulders. I made my decision to move into BJJ because as the body started breaking down more often, and being nearly 50, even with some extra dad bod cushion you still never get used being thrown at 235lbs dozens of times per class. So I decided to start the easy injury free sport of BJJ! hahaha.
Ironically my first week of BJJ, i decided to go back to my Judo dojo to check it out, and playing around reinjured a previously torn meniscus, once I got back to normal then covid hit, and in my state all the schools were forced closed, at this rate I'm probably going to be a white belt forever, haha, been able to sneak in rounds here and there on the down low to try and at least retain knowledge over the year. But I love it, its a great sport, I enjoy the chess match. And the BJJ ground work is light years beyond the Newaza we used to do. I've got a few crafty attacks that are above my basic white belt rank, but the guards and guard retention in BJJ is truly frustrating.
Love your videos man, the narration is great and I get to learn a lot from it. Definitely a great learning resource and entertaining as well.

I hate to admit it, but I am the samurai. 😅 I’m 26 years old, 6’1” 225, very athletically gifted (natty), 1st stripe white belt, training for about 3 months now, and every time after rolling with someone I haven’t rolled with yet they ask if I wrestled in college (I never wrestled). No other white belts really tap me since I started (they used to my first two weeks), and I definitely have been beating up on a few blue belts as of late. I give some purples problems with my guard retention (spider/lasso seems to be my go to), but I’ve yet to submit any. You hit the nail on the head though man! I’m not a spaz white belt (and if you’re reading this and you’re a white belt you know who you are SLOW IT DOWN), and I definitely don’t try to brute my way through anything. I just try and stay competitive and train super hard. That being said, 26 is definitely late to be picking up a sport like this especially since I already have a career and a shit ton of other hobbies, but training 3-4 times a week 2 hours a sessions seems to do the trick alongside lifting weights whenever I can.
    Great video man 🤙🏻🤙🏻🤙🏻

Kudos. 1 remark about this video, suggesting that LeBron is not a “nerdy” type or one who does not exactly put a lot of thought in his (or does not have too) craft is incorrect. Same as for other sportsmen or women, like say a C. Ronaldo, he puts a lot of time and thought in conditioning, nutrition etc. Next to this he allocates material time and effort towards studying the principles, techniques of his craft. He is considered a purest and student of his art/sport. He also seems to apply his nerdy traits to other elements of his life as evidenced by his varied interests and succes in other fields. Also one to look up too whether you are a fan of this particular sport/craft/art or not.

I am a combo of the "Old Timer" and the "Gym Bro" with a new one, "The Crossover" (someone with experience in a different martial art) I am in my mid-30s, and really see and feel that I am slower than I was 40lbs and 10 years ago. However, in those last 10 years, I have been powerlifting, so it's 25lbs of muscle and 15lbs of fat. So I do have that strength and mass at 200lbs when I want it, but it depletes my energy bar quickly. I also learned just enough MMA going through the Army's hand to hand fight school to frustrate the other White Belts and newer Blue Belts, and make things a little more interesting for the Purple Belts and up.
I am also very quick to give the other practitioners the credit they have earned and tap. My joints are harder to repair than my ego, so when someone gets a technique on me, I tell them "You got me, good job!" If it's particularly gnarly, I ask what it was, and how I fell prey to it. So far so good.
