I watched it again today and after that i watched one of yours Jedi..2hours later i am here watching your commentary about his performance ✨👌what do we call it synchronicity💫by the way not guilty my honour👨⚖️
Part of me wants to say “Josh should have been promoted to a higher rank”, but… I know from firsthand experience how BJJ belt rank politics work. For I too was once a “competition blue belt” … for 10 years.
RAMSEY IN THE COMMENTS!!! I watch alot of your content coach Dewey, I didn't know you were a 10 year! Puts alot into perspective, just got my purple a week ago, after 4 years as a blue belt; so much politics
And then there are instructors who will give rank when it's warranted. If you are a white belt and beating brown belts in competition then you DESERVE to be a higher rank.
I suspect this is far more common than people think. Including seasoned wrestlers who are well above white belt level in BJJ but remain there due to a few holes in their Jujitsu game, and win matches because of this loophole
I personally don't care what belt he is if he's competing in the expert division. His understanding of inside control from bottom is crazy for a white belt though. Combine that with the preshhhh during the kneecut, it's hard to say dude is a true white belt. When I was a white belt I had glaring holes in my understanding-glad to see the game ✨evolving✨
I feel like the problem is most competitions and schools don't separate Gi rank and NoGi rank. So when someone like Josh who grinded only NoGi at 10p then it looks really bad for the other guys who probably mainly do Gi
People get too caught up in belts. I've seen many instances where guys had tons of grappling experience prior to entering a school that goes by a belt system. If a guy has years of judo, sambo and wrestling under his belt (no pun intended) then it's not unusually for him to be able to handle himself against high ranked belts once he enrolls at a BJJ school that makes everyone start off as white belts, no matter how advanced their actual skills are. NO white belt submits a brown belt unless they have some legitimate prior experience.
I personally have a friend who tapped brown belts in tournament as a white belt. He got his blue belt shortly after and went on to tap a bellator fighter who was also a brown belt in an open. So it definitely happens. But he was really good and naturally gifted. People may call it sandbagging.
I think of belts similar to degrees and certificates in education. If you have a PhD, it means you've spent a lot of time learning about and researching a topic. But you could also have done that as a consequence of your job or something, which usually won't yield a piece of document saying that you did the work.
It’s not sandbagging off he joins an expert open belt tourney lol. Sandbagging would be off he joined a white belt tourney when he’s clearly ready to move up
he had only been training for a year and 3 months with no previous grappling allegedly. He says he just trained 6-8 times a week for that period. I think its possible if he was very talented and athletic.
I was a white belt 3 days ago, and some people would doubt my belt too. Idk in other countries, but in Brazil, competitors in general are all very tough, even the white ones. I never lost a competition, but now that Im a blue belt I have a big chance of losing, cause Ill get guys that are holding their blue belt maybe for years, and are next to the purple. So, in general the belt doesnt mean a Lot, especially If you are a competitor, cause you will need to be better than the regular dudes. For example, I train very hard with purple, brown and Black belts, and some times I get ragdolled, but I've finished them many times as well, especially purple ones.
As a kid back in early 70s Bruce Lee was a God and I had seen all his movies by the age of 13. I learned a lot from them including sweeps, double kicks ETC. Growing up in a big city in California I also had a few street fights. When I started MA I was a few steps above most beginners. My point is this kid could be a white belt with possible wrestling experience and learned some moves from videos and ufc ETC.
Tiny story. I was training in Kempo and my partner was a white belt, about my size and a little older;we were just doing kicks and we had heavy pads but his kicks were really solid and I said, “How in the world are you a white belt?” And his reply, “Oh, I’m a black belt in 6 other styles.”
Brother this video was great! Never seen you're content before now and I can say for definite you're videos are already making me want to learn more about bjj, I've never bothered about it in the past but I dk you make it sound good haha
LMAO 😂 some BJJ schools have different standards and focus. Some more Gi and some only NoGi. It's completely up to the head Black Belt. I feel like the problem is most competitions and schools don't separate Gi rank and NoGi rank. So when someone like Josh who grinded only NoGi at 10p then it looks really bad for the other guys who probably mainly do Gi
I love watching your videos!! Very entertaining! I train with/under a guy at 10th Planet Denver that competed against you a while back whose also a purple belt named Keith Roop-Eckart! He said you're a really cool guy and it has always shown in your vids!! Keep up the great work! 🤟🏿🤟🏿
best channel to watch after jiu jitsu. just got my first rear naked choke in sparring and your videos are the best swear i've seen this video before but im still watching it again 😂😂
I've never been to grading and any stripes I received came off in the washing machine. Now I only train no gi, so still a white belt. I saw so many people get their purple and brown belts, that as far as I could see only got them for attending class, as they seriously lacked some basic fundamentals. That's why I didn't care what belt I was because to me it didn't matter. White Belt for LIFE!
I have seen this a number of times now in various tourneys. These guys are watching nogi expert grapplers and investing in their content. Then they come in with a very basic strategy and employ it well. Today's competitive beginners have a huge leg up on the previous generation.
nah. maybe a guy with absolutely no grappling understanding whatsoever, but it's *really* not that hard to learn the guard retention fundamentals. most of the white belts in my gym have an extremely solid understanding of guard retention and butterfly and it only takes them about a year to get there. competing will propel your progression 10 fold
I saw this same guy get wrecked (no offense, they were all monsters) by blue belts in a tournament at b team. Not all athletes are created equal, he isn’t a sandbagged just a good athlete. Guy with dreads also looked really small, huge factor there
If you come from a grappling background that doesn’t use belts to distinguish people the idea of being a freshman destroying the Senior is not that off and it’s not that different than being a white belt destroying a brown belt.
This is why belts are dumb. In any other sport, it’s completely possible and documented that someone who is newer to the sport, more athletic, more motivated or smarter, can compete with/beat an athlete who’s been playing for longer. Same goes in jiu jitsu. Belts are literally a time served indication, not how good you actually are.
@@jedidoesjiujitsu3177 Guess I been hittin that DMT vape pen too much recently. Lol jokes aside I got some saucy comp footage and I would be honored if you broke it down in one of your vids, gonna shoot you a dm rn
I know that this is how the sport is supposed to be, but i still think that just sitting on the ground waiting for your opponent because he can't just kick or punch you is a dishonorable strategy. Even the people from Kosen Judo didn't fight like that back then...
A week ago my teammate a real white belt was rejected to compete at white belt level and had to compete at blue level belt because judges saw his level wasn't while belt even he's a white belt.
Gym's that get high off of farts while rolling will keep you at white belt for year's just to boast about you winning some tourney's.. it's why I went from Carlson Gracie Jr to Orlando Araujo... I started in Chicago ended up in Arizona... Same scam with this cat...
C'mon dude. If you are young, athletic, and dedicated and you are around 16 months of training at 9X per week, YOU SHOULD NOT BE ENTERING OR WEARING WHITE BELT. Its not uncommon for practictioners who train 2.5x per week for 14 months to get promoted to blue. You in excess of 3x the amount of mat time over here. Not only is this sandbag status.. its on the higher end of the sandbag spectrum🤷🏽♂️
Have to disagree. Homie was only training 3 months in this video. He also went up to expert division. His competition may not have been elite but you can’t pretend like he was rolling with white belts
Train all you want in that short amount of time, you're only going to get good at those things that you trained. There's going to be big gaps in other areas, because of the long-term training deficit. Either way, this kid is a 10th planet student, who probably only trains nogi, so the point is moot, because once you place in a tournament like Naga, you can't stay in a beginner level anyway. They will automatically push you up.
Can we be real and just say the truth. This kid was an unranked brown belt at this time. 10 years....as a blue belt.....what
Meanwhile on the other end of the spectrum, I went 0-5 in my first tournament yesterday. 6months of training
All good bro. At least you are out there and bettering yourself. I bet a few more years in and you will be a beast
6 months training, in tournaments you might face people who have been training up to 24 months at white belt, don't beat yourself up.
You guys are on the same spectrum. Both white belts. One just better than the other
Our hero returned when we needed him most

Bottom line is those are not white belt level skills but he’s not sandbagging since he’s in the open 🤷🏻♂️

Watching people like Josh makes me want to give my blue belt back. Great content and editing as usual!
Nah, I think he should be blue belt at least.
@Ernie Strother 🤙🙏🥋
Well he is a blue belt, and clearly was sandbagging a little or at the very least his coach was a dick who wouldn't promote him lol

Ya. I think the real question is "are these guys actually brown belts?"
They’re brown belts, but he’s no white belt. He moves at high level, white belts don’t do that.

He was promoted very quickly afterwards. It's an obvious case of withholding a belt from someone and them becoming way to strong for their division.
