- In July 1969, a short war broke out between two Central American nations, El Salvador and Honduras. It is often known as 'The Soccer War' or 'The Football War', suggesting that matches played between those countries were the main cause of the conflict. This is quite inaccurate and superficial and this video will explain why.
For aviation enthusiasts, the most interesting fact about the war is that this was the last time that piston-engine fighters fought each other and shot each other down.
In part one, you will hear about the roots of the war, learn about equipment that both sides had and see how aircraft were employed right to the first air victory.

@@showtime112 Of course, and also both countries had issues with unexploding bombs I guess WW2 leftovers of bad quality, so bombs hit some homes in Tegucigalpa but didn't explode and also those bombs were thrown by hand out of the C-47s I live in Tegucigalpa and in the aviation museum here you can find the helmet of the P-51 pilot, pretty interesting visit if you ever come down here
My grandmother went to school with him my father told me about his plane that was parked for a while funfact that you make no know is that he actually met one of the pilots he shot down since he ejected before his plane exploded. Sadly the pilot that shot down 3 planes passed away.

Good job, and not just because of the depictions of air combat. The explanation of the historical context is even more important--not a "soccer war" at all, but one over much deeper and more important issues.
Thanks for the comment! If you search for videos about this conflict, most of them still suggest that it broke out over soccer because they are all hotheads down there.
Great video. Your pronunciation of names in all these diverse languages is very impressive. The difference made by that one Honduran officer is a compelling lesson in the effectiveness of good leadership. Crazy that a Honduran T-28 could do anything against the Salvadoran Corsair. I've never even seen pictures of an armed T-28. Thanks again for your excellent work.

The US Army flew armed T-28s during the Vietnam War as attack bombers. The USAF cried foul and the Army had to cease flying armed fixed wing aircraft. Stupid decision.
The final use of WW2 planes in combat I believe so.
I'm not 100% sure but I think it is very likely so.

Liopango was attacked again by the "Farabundo Marti" communist guerrilas in January1982, most of the El Salvador air force was destroyed in the attack.
One particular point was the attackers sappers trained by the vietnamese Dac Cong SF, veterans of the war against USA

@@showtime112 The sappers destroyed 5 old french Ouragans, 6 UH-1H and 3 C-47.and damaged 5 more....in days USA replaced all, they send 12 UH-1, 8 A-37B and 3 C-123.

Honestly this dope! 1969 fighting with ww2 equipment just seems more interesting then the jets of those times like the f4 phantom. This like how people today prefer older sports like the Toyota Supra mk4 than the new one 😮

One of the most unbelievable aerial war of the XX century, and it's true, the deep reason is the distribution of the field and properties in Honduras, because wealthy honduran landowner wanted to hunt out of land the savadorians people who wanted to settle in Honduras, it's only because they escape poverty from their country.
So the Honduran landowner put the pressure on their gouvernment.
The neighboring country, the Guatemala has the particularity not to have army at all, it's a peacefull and neutral country.
Neighboring Guatemala does have an army. They fought a 33-year long war against Marxist guerrillas, which ended in 1996. Down South, there's Costa Rica that abolished its army in 1948, replacing it with a Police Force.

Well, in the case of these two countries, it might still be possible today. I find these small, limited conflicts even more fascinating than major ones.

Thanks! Well, the skin was working on this version. The Honduran Corsairs are F4U-4 versions armed with cannons. But there isn't much of a difference in War thunder as the sound is just generic.
I remember seeing the picture of the Salvadoran president with the army after they took over “El Amarillo” a Honduran city in the museum look like scary times even being 🇸🇻
This happened after President Fidel Sanchez Hernandez of El Salvador took over "El Amatillo" a Honduran City. Honduras also struck llopango airbase . The Salvadoran army made rapid progress on land and were a striking distance from taking over the capital. So the Honduran government called on the Organization of American States to intervene, fearing that the Salvadoran Army would soon invade the capital Tegucigalpa.
False statement, not true. After salvodorean army was heroically stopped and suffered a counteroffensive in the southern front at the battle of la Arada this gave the opportunity to send the GHP battallion of tegucigalpa, honduras capital city, to the southwestern front reinforcing its position there, very weak, to stop the salvadorean advance in that front. After winning the battle of San Rafael de las Mataras in that front, the Honduran army stopped and defeated the salvadorean army. Now the Salvadorean government accepted the cease fire call from OEA that Honduras was asking and negotiating for since day 1 of the war. Honduras was defending itself from an invasion of El Salvador. Once stopped and defeated the invading army, then the honduran struggle for peace since the beginning came about by assuming a sronger position that favored Honduran call. Honduras won the diplomatic and in some way the ground and air battle of this 100 hour war. Diplomacy favored Honduran position in the border defenition by the veredict of the international court of justice of Hage, Holland on september 11, 1992, ratifying it on september/October 2003. Honduras thesis was the true one favoring it about 95% of it.

Congratulations, well explained, true version. El Salvador government prepared the invasion since 1967 and attacked Honduras in treason and without a war declaration on the 14 of july 1969 at 6:10 p.m. Honduras soon established air superiority. This compensated the small, unwell equiped, less in number but well trained and brave infantry men and almost no artillery honduras had. Outnumbered 3 to 1 and sometimes 4 to 1. Despite this fact, the brave and well trained honduran soldiers managed to stop salvadoran advance-invasion in the battle of la Arada in the southern front and stopped defeated (the salvadoreans) and the turning point of the war in the battle of San Rafael de las Mataras at the south western front. Air force back up was very helpful as well, since after 3 confirmed shotdown salvadorean planes by a honduran pilot the salvadorean air force avoided fight, they were scare to death and quit fighting. In those terms Honduras won the war. El Salvador lost more than what they were expecting to earn in this war.

So, an air to air kill for a T-28 against the Corsair? That's only the second air-to-air kill for a T-28.
Actually, the T-28 just managed to damage the Corsair which eventually escaped. But it's still a good achievement for a trainer aircraft.

It so happened that I was born during those hundred hours.
Interesting to note that American pilots also flew during this Bloods-versus-Crips "war". You know, they were recruited like fringe gang members to fight for the FAS, though I guess since iot was for money, they'd have whored themselves out to the highest bidder, like any good gang member. Nice move on their part. I'm sure they weighed the ethical and moral tenets first. Sure.
