I am 91 - US Air Force - was stationed on a island off the Korean coast -
amazing story - Australian Sea Fury could not get to carrier just off our island - Dead Engine - made a "Dead stick landing on our "curved sand beach ! We got to the plane to see the pilot sitting on the wing "Hello Mates- Got any beer?" He said. We shared some brew- had laughs - he looked like he was about 16 - Plane was put on a barge back to carrier - Amazing Plane - Amazing Pilot !

I saw a fury at an airshow probably 25 years ago now and the thing was an absolute beast, coming down in a shallow dive it was whistling and at ground level easily as fast as any of the modern jets so it doesnt surprise me that inexperienced Mig pilots completely underestimated the fury which was probably the pinnacle of piston fighter design and whatever aircraft you are in if you got in the sights of 4 x 20mm cannon you're in big trouble regardless of whether you're past or present, worth a mention as well was one of the ultimate high performance aero piston engines, the Centaurus was a masterpiece, great video

Uncle Peter Sqibb was an engineer on Theseus, he was a rocket expert who worked on the Saunders Roe dual power interceptor. When a Sea fury went U/S in Korea and had to divert to a US airfield with engine trouble he flew out in a Firefly backseat and repaired the plane in a tent in the snow, 60 years later he got a letter from one of the Yanks with a photo of himself working on the engine. Later on he worked with Martin Baker on the cancelled ejection system for the lower deck boys on the Vulcan. Quite a guy.

Both Iraq & Pakistan ordered the land-based Fury I models along with several of the two-seat trainer versions in 1946, with Pakistan being the largest foreign operator acquiring close to a total of 100 Fury models based on the second prototype; and a total of 9 two-seat trainers.
Egypt bought 12 Furies in the early 1950's. I could go on with countries that bought the land-based Fury models, however I believe that I made my point.
The "Fury" might not have seen service in WWII or Korea (unlike the Sea Fury, which had a very distinguished service record, even managing to down several Mig 15's), but it did see service & combat with other countries; in some cases, right up until 1968, just as the North American P-51 Mustang saw service with Argentina until they were retired in 1978.

Including the South African Airforce (SAAF). Although we rarely get credited with anything from WW1, WW2 and the Korean war:
"While equipped with Mustangs, the squadron flew 10 373 sorties and out of a total 95 Mustangs acquired, no fewer than 74 were lost due to enemy action and accidents. Twelve pilots were killed in action, 30 missing and four wounded.
In January 1953 the squadron received USAF F-86F Sabre jet fighter-bombers. Pilots and ground crew had to undergo courses in Japan to adapt to the aircraft. The first Sabre mission was flown on 16 March 1953. This marked the entry of the SAAF into a new era of jet warfare. Operating from K-55, the Flying Cheetahs took part in fighter sweeps along the Yalu and Chong-Chong rivers as well as ground targets. The squadron flew a total of 2 032 sorties in the Sabres. Only four Sabres were lost out of 22 supplied.
The war ended on 27 July 1953. 34 SAAF pilots had lost their lives and eight taken prisoner of war, including the future Chief of the Air Force, General D Earp. 74 Mustangs and 4 Sabres were lost. Prior to returning to South Africa, the Sabres were returned to the USAF."

Hawker did build a version of the Tempest with the Centaurus engine, so it was not a great stretch to use that as the basis for the Fury/Sea Fury. Kudos for stating that this interception was one of a relative few cases of a prop fighter taking down a jet fighter. Many times one reads incorrect statements that this was the FIRST (or only) case of this happening. It happened in WWII, Korean War ... AND VIETNAM where the prop aircraft responsible was not even a fighter but a Skyraider attack aircraft!

The first WWII allied claim for Me262 to be brought down by "aerial gunfire" (direct fire due to aerial combat - not the ME262 flying into the ground due to pilot error in dogfighting as in some cases or fire from the ground as in AA fire) goes to No 401 Sqn RCAF when on 5th October 1944 12 Spitfires from 401 Sqn performing CAP over Arnhem/Nijmegen area saw an Me262 diving towards Nijmegen at 14.45 hrs. 5 pilots from 401 shot at the Me262 which was observed to crash into the ground.
According to his "Encounter Report", Chuck Yeager shot his Me262 down when the type was coming into land a month or so later on 6th November 1944. And you are correct it was a North American P51 Mustang he was flying.
IIRC (I can't find the source just now) but the very first Me262 was brought down by a Bofors AA gun belonging to the RAF Regiment. Not such a feat as the "Rocks" were very experienced by this time after shooting down quite a few of the worlds first cruise missile, the V1 flying bomb!

The Sea Fury represents the peak of this technology, the super-props. There were some fantastic designs around but the jet age kill them all like the dinosaurs they now were.
    Lots of Spitfire production shots.
    Large formation of P-51s.
    Lots of Fairy Fireflies.
The RAF cancelled its order because it had enough Spitfires and Tempests. The Hurricane was already obsolete.
'1300 metres' is a distance, not a rate of climb. As this was a British aircraft produced in the 1940s all data was in imperial units. The number you want is 4500 ft/min.
I'm sure the Sea Fury was designed to take up to 16 3" rockets rather than 12.
Incorporation of radar and other novel avionics doesn't make an aircraft smaller, stronger or faster. Bizarre wording.
'The 7-Seventy-Eighth' is an Americanism. In the FAA it's just '778 Sqn' or 'Number 778 Sqn'.
    So many shots of Firflies!!
The aircraft at 5:19 and 10:42 is a Blackburn Firebrand; you must have worked to find those rare clips. The Firebrand was contemporary with the Sea Fury but proved a bit of a dog and few were built. They did not go to Korea.
    And more Fireflies.
I see the rocket load-out has increased to 16.
Doesn't Korea look a lot like 1944 Northern France? That would explain the Hawker Typhoon at 8:51.
The jet-powered aircraft being destroyed at 9:51 is a V1 Buzz Bomb. No V1s were deployed to Korea.
Wikepedia has 8 Sea Furies on display around the world. However, there are also at least 13 still flying, albeit some are somewhat modified in their new role as air racers. They are still competitive.
Given the title, I'm surprised you didn't say more about the Mig15 kill. The FAA indeed credited it to Carmichael, who was always slightly reticent about the incident. However, later investigation amongst those involved awarded the victory to his colleague Lt Ellis.
I know this channel is all about monetarisation but with a bit more care with the script and someone picking the clips who knows what they are looking at it could be so much better!

Seafury is still fairly fast, while quite a bit slower than the Mig, its still very fast for a prop fighter. It have much lower wingloading, its manufable, and also have much better view than the mig.
There never really been a situation where pure speed won the day. Sure if you put a Mig 15 against a Sopwith that might be the case, but when the diffrance in speed is not that huge other factors are still very important

    • @matsv201
      @matsv201 ปีที่แล้ว

@@lancerevell5979 Well that is of cause true. But it no quite the whole story.
While the mig is probobly the better fighter in theory, there is other aspects.
Ask the simple question why the British pilot was better. Of cause, he had more others, but why.
This is of cause partly down to training doctrine, but also down to that the sea fury is (for a fighter) pretty cheap to fly, the mig, less so.
And that kind of boils it down why nato pilot have 200 hours of standard a year, while USSR/Russian pilot got 50. That is quite a large gap.
Often its claimed that Russian airplane are cheap to fly. That is only true in vacuum. When considering cost of work its not really true.l

Biplanes in WW2 scored plenty of victories against much faster and more modern fighters, if their pilots were stupid enough to engage in a dogfight. A Gloster Gladiator couldn’t get anywhere near a 109, Mitsubishi Zero or Macci C200s all of whi were much faster - but scored victories against each of these monoplanes when their pilots threw away their speed advantage to get an ‘easy kill’ of a Gladiator- and found the biplane could run rings around them.
