It's important to give credit to the writers of this song, two Englishmen called Anthony Newley and Leslie Bricusse for the stage play The Roar of the Greasepaint - The Smell of the Crowd. It was originally sung on stage by Cy Grant in 1964. That "vocal solo" you mentioned at the end is a jazz technique called "scat" - it's a form of vocalising. I understand that Ms. Simone firstly heard John Coltrane play the song and then decided to record it as civil rights anthem.
It feels to me that something good just happened to her... like she just got out of an abusive relationship, she got a new job and quit a job she hated, she's finally at the age where she can retire and travel and enjoy life... or like she got sober and finally beat an addiction... it feels like she "beat the odds" somehow and it's like finally something good has happened in her life... and the vibe of the song to me feels like she's at the beginning of that new chapter of her life... it's giving "FINALLY" to me... like it took her a really long time to accomplish something and now she's walking in that accomplishment and feeling really good about it!! It's almost like she's proud of some kind of accomplishment... or that she left something behind that was bringing her down...
I like to compare her cover of "Summertime" with Janis Joplin version; Billie Holiday's version; Aretha Franklin's version and so many other great ones. Nina Simone is my favourite. GREAT choice! She and Ella Fitzgerald dominated the female jazz scene. This song has been covered literally by every major artist since it came out. Incidentally, Porgy and Bess was George Gershwin's jazz opera that gave us many great songs, including Summertime.

I have to add something important that is not mentioned enough. In addition to all her musical talents Nina was an amazing live performer. She was not just act at the stage or near the piano. She literally lived in her songs. You need to look at her live performances. Some of they are very touchable, others are very inspiring. Look at Nina Simone's Live in Holland '65. Not for reaction video, just for selfeducation. It's very interesting.

Quirky lady... yes. She was abused, she suffer discrimination and violence, and finally she was diagnosis bipolar disorder. The music was a powerful tool for her, for her freedom, for her sanity. She was a incredible strong woman.
Just as a side note, she was recently inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Why, is a mystery to me since the only R&R she did were covers and only then were more jazz than rock or even R&B. But what the hell, she deserved any accolade she received.

Nina Simone is new to me too, but I can tell you, what I have heard so far is so good, I just know it will all be good. I would like to recommend that you watch a video of Maya Angelou reciting her Phenomenal Woman poem.
This time was still very segrated. Her music played a lot in "jupe joints" in the south and more main stream above the Mason-Dixon Line. I believe that she actually made a guest starring role in the movie, "Pillow Talk" with Doris Day and Rock Hudson. I also THINK that one her songs was also used in "American Horror Story" Season House.
Perry Blackwell was the jazz singer in Pillow Talk with Doris and Rock, not Nina. A couple years later Perry also sang in the Bette Davis film Dead Ringer.
I did make a mistake. Perry Blackwell made the cameo in "Pillow Talk". Nina's "Sugar Bowl" was featured in the 1st season of American Horror Story", "House". Etta James is also wondetful. Her song, "At Last" is amazing! (The Broadway Show she sang from, was" PorGee (hard G) and Bess" about 2 African-Americans in love in the "new south". Best known song from that show is "Summertime And The Livin' Is Easy".) Anthony Newley was a very prolific songwriter in several genre's rather like Paul Williams and Leon Russell (though NO ONE can match Leon! So proud of my Oklahoma boy! RIP!). Newley also wrote the songs and performed in the original movie version of "Dr.Doolittle". He was also an excellent dancer and in many other productions. K. WOW! Such a thrill to see someone discover this, and for someone so young to discover the amazing Nina Simone. She was an amazing and sometimes controversial artist. Her brilliant career was somewhat derailed by her very passionate political activism and this story is wonderfully told in the Netflix show 'What Happened, Miss Simone?' You really should watch it to understand how magnificent she was. At a point where she was bankrupt and living in Switzerland she recorded a much neglected album called Baltimore. Anything Nina Simone touched is gold. In particular, I greatly prefer her '74 version of "The Pusher" over the Stepenwolf original.

Nina Simone is new to me too, but I can tell you, what I have heard so far is so good, I just know it will all be good. I would like to recommend that you watch a video of Maya Angelou reciting her Phenomenal Woman poem.
This time was still very segrated. Her music played a lot in "jupe joints" in the south and more main stream above the Mason-Dixon Line. I believe that she actually made a guest starring role in the movie, "Pillow Talk" with Doris Day and Rock Hudson. I also THINK that one her songs was also used in "American Horror Story" Season House.
Perry Blackwell was the jazz singer in Pillow Talk with Doris and Rock, not Nina. A couple years later Perry also sang in the Bette Davis film Dead Ringer.

I did make a mistake. Perry Blackwell made the cameo in "Pillow Talk". Nina's "Sugar Bowl" was featured in the 1st season of American Horror Story", "House". Etta James is also wondetful. Her song, "At Last" is amazing! (The Broadway Show she sang from, was" PorGee (hard G) and Bess" about 2 African-Americans in love in the "new south". Best known song from that show is "Summertime And The Livin' Is Easy".)
Anthony Newley was a very prolific songwriter in several genre's rather like Paul Williams and Leon Russell (though NO ONE can match Leon! So proud of my Oklahoma boy! RIP!). Newley also wrote the songs and performed in the original movie version of "Dr.Doolittle". He was also an excellent dancer and in many other productions. K. WOW! Too much useless knowledge and verbal diarrhea...not a good combo! You're so good to indulge me! My sweet reactor by far!

Mississippi God Damn is a very strong song
Such a thrill to see someone discover this, and for someone so young to discover the amazing Nina Simone. She was an amazing and sometimes controversial artist. Her brilliant career was somewhat derailed by her very passionate political activism and this story is wonderfully told in the Netflix show 'What Happened, Miss Simone?' You really should watch it to understand how magnificent she was. At a point where she was bankrupt and living in Switzerland she recorded a much neglected album called Baltimore. An amazing artist and woman. It's great to see folks your age discovering great music outside the rock/pop box. Another artist worth giving a try is Billie Holliday. More of a jazz singer, but someone every music fan should be aware of. Try "God Bless the Child."
