    I agree with the criteria you've used to select your candidates. I would definitely include Wolfgang Kramer, as his body of work spans decades now and has won Spiel des Jahres multiple times. Sid Sackson would also be another great designer to add to the list, as many of his designs (which go back as far as the 1950s) were big inspirations for later designers games. Other than those two, I think your list is a great outlook on the concept of a Hall of Fame.

    I also believe tha Kramer and Kiesling, Vital Lacerda, Bruno Cathala and....Jamey Stegmaier should be on this list ;)

    Inka and Markus Brand have to be future hall of fame contenders! Bottom of the ninth hitters I'd want on my team.

    Corey for pretty much defining the hidden traitor mechanic in Battlestar Galactica.
    Rob for defining the Legacy mechanic.
    Donald X. Vaccarino for defining the deck buglier.
    Reiner Knizia, Antoine Bauza, Richard Garfield for the sheer breath of their work and the influences they've had on the hobby.

    I love Rich Garfield. One of the best people ever if you get the chance to meet him in person. And his most underrated game is Treasure Hunter from Queen Games. Great List Jamey!

      I got Treasure Hunter for one of my kids for Christmas a couple of years ago but he has not wanted to play it for some reason. I need to get it to the table maybe playing without him and playing with others.

    Great list, really enjoyed this Sunday Sitdown. For me the number 1 in the hall of fame would have to be Vlaada for the same reasons you gave. No one seems to have such an impressive but varied catalogue of games as he does. Agree with lots of your other entries too, although would argue that Feld should be on there! Thanks again for another great video :)

    • @jameystegmaier
      @jameystegmaier  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, I'm not sure why I forgot about Feld. I think it may be that all of his games I know of fall within a very narrow category of Euros, though there's nothing wrong with being very good at a specific thing.

  • @antoniabrowne3029

    As some had mentioned W. Kramer has a great ammount of games and have had a great impact on industry. Like the track around the board games to count points, he invented it. A lot of variety. Agreed with Vlaada. Agreed with kniziá.

    Nice list! But quite surprised Friedemann Friese is not on that list nor did I see him mentioned in the comments! The obvious choice amongst his creations would be Power Grid (and wouldn't be wrong!) but that man has a long list of great games!

    • @jameystegmaier
      @jameystegmaier  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I definitely considered it, but then I took a closer look at what he's designed, and I just didn't see that many games that have made a huge impact (at least in the US--perhaps he's much more successful in Germany). I certainly applaud his innovation and variety, though.

  • @clumsydad7158
    @clumsydad7158 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    wow, you have been on a roll with your concepts for posting, totally excellent!
    Uwe - not a fan, too dry, enjoyed Patchwork and own (want to play) Bohnanza
    Vlaada - when you think about just Through the Ages, Mage Knight, and Codenames, alone those 3 games are among the hugest ever… not to mention all the other stuff he’s done and yet to do … amazing, actually I’m going to go check his oeuvre again right now.
    Knizia - has to be #1, just because of his total impact, and def. the tear he was on between about ‘97 - ‘03.
    No Stefan Feld ?? that’s ballsy, he’s got tons and tons of highly ranked titles. But honestly I only own C.O.B.
    And no Kramer and Kiesling? Oh man, I don’t know about that either.
    Very intriguing, thanks (-:

    Jamey great list...I love Martin Wallace...love his discworld games but I feel that Alan r moon has to be on the list for the same reason as Richard Garfield...the impact that ticket to ride had on pushing modern boardgames to where they are today...but again only my opinion...thanks again.

    Richard Garfield's first three ccgs are some of my top favorite games. I may just love collectible cards too much, but I think these three games define a lot of what i like about other board and card games. So that's *Magic: the Gathering*, *Netrunner*, and *Vampire: the Eternal Struggle*.

    • @antoyal

    Fun idea for your Sunday Sitdown! Hard to argue with your picks and when trying to do my own list, I found it very difficult to narrow it down to 10. Probably the biggest omission from your list, in my opinion, is Stefan Feld. I guess his point salad games are not varied enough to make it on your list?

    • @jameystegmaier
      @jameystegmaier  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, I think Feld didn't occur to me because of how narrow of a category he covers. But he's very good at those games!

    For having a wider selection of game designers in a hypothetical hall of fame, I'd structure it with different wings. So you could have categories of mechanisms with designers that specialize in certain kinds of games. This could be a good counterpoint to your criteria of game designers that have a wide range of types of games. Then this also allows for focusing on women designers and persons of color. But it will take time for beginning designers like myself to rise up. Only one or two games under the belt is not enough to be any kind of hall of famer. :-)

    Just like you, I feel that Ora et Labora is one amazing game and I really can't decide if I like that or Feast for Odin more. They are his #1 and #2 games no matter which one is first. Pfister, well, I really didn't like Isle of Skye at all but Great Western Trail is my favourite game of all time. Knizia's Tigris & Euphrates is amazing (I have a somewhat rare 1st edition German Hans im Glück edition of that game with the wooden pieces!), however I haven't played Ra. Bauza's 7 Wonders: Duel is one of my favourite 2p games.

    If anyone wants to get to know some designers better, I recommend the Five Games for Doomsday podcast. So far just some of the notable guests are: Isaac Childres, Reiner Knizia, Inka Brand, and Ignacy Trzewiczek. I am new to the hobby and haven't even played games by these people, but it seems most board game designers are interesting individuals. Also, the format of the podcast is entertaining. Maybe Jamey will appear one day?

    If we're specifically talking tabletop gaming? My perspective is on European and North American gaming, which is admittedly a limited bias. I'm also not familiar enough with miniature gaming to comment on that (But, well, I know the first modern miniature wargame was by H. G. Wells, so could see an arguement for him on any such list)
    My choice of games are for things I think is most representative of why I think they should be on the list (or most representative of there designs generally for 'sheer bredth of design'), not necessarily my favourite of thier games. There are some obvious omissions of games because it isn't so clear what specific designer to attatch, and this is hall of fame of designers, not games (e.g. Cosmic Encounter, which was the first game to go all in on variable player powers)
    Richard Garfield (For inventing the CCG genre as we know it today) - Magic the Gathering
    Matt Leecock (For being at the front of the co-op revolution) - Pandemic
    Reiner Knizia (For sheer bredth of design) - I'm going to go Tigris & Euphrates
    Lizzie Magie (For doing an early example of a game designed rather than evolved, along with inventing a lot of modern mechanics in the process) - The Landlord's Game
    Klaus Teuber (For popularizing what we now know as Euro games in the anglosphere) - Catan
    Sid Sackson (For sheer bredth of design) - Acquire
    All 6 of these designers have to get onto it, imo, as the six I would argue are the most influential individuals to what modern gaming looks like in North America and Europe - I can't imagine what it looks like without any of these individuals, or if it gets to where it looks like today I think it would have taken longer than it took to get here.
    More questionable preferences of mine from which I'd pick four to join those 6.
    David Parlett (Representative of Spiel des Jarres and the influence that's had on the industry, by way of being the first winner of the award) - Hare and Tortoise
    Mike Fitzgerald (Sheer bredth of design) - Going to go with Mystery Rummy
    Leslie Scott (Early example of a designed, rather than folk, dexterity game outside of the children's space) - Jenga
    Rob Daviau (Inventing the Legacy mechanic) - Risk Legacy
    Donald X Vaccarino (Inventing the Deck Building mechanic) - Dominion
    Martin Wallace (Sheer bredth of design) - I'm going to go Brass
    Friedmann Friesse (Sheer bredth of design) - I'm going to go Power Grid
    Uwe Rosenberg (Sheer bredth of design) - I'm going to go Agricola
    Eric Lang (Sheer bredth of deisgn) - I'm going to go Blood Rage
    Stefan Feld (Sheer bredth of design) - I'm going to go Castles of Burgundy

    • @Stephen-Fox
      @Stephen-Fox 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      (And, just to add - There are a couple of Obvious Omissions of influential games because they're hard to pin down to an individual behind them - Cosmic Encounter, for example)

      His games are usually very dense and complex, but -I haven't played it yet- the new one, Fort Sumter, is a two-player game between 25 and 40 minutes. Seems the best place to start.

      The Alliance-System is quite strange / random / arbitrary. In two groups this did not work. Blood Rage worked so far in every group (everybody plays for him-/herself and everybody is happy). And if you play RS with 3 players, one is always without an alliance and has many disadvantages. But of course, this is subjective...

      Absolutely! Elizabeth Hargrave, of course (we publish her game, Wingspan). Inka Brand is amazing. Juliana Patel and Ariel Rubin are wonderful escape-room-in-a-box and puzzle game desginers. I like Qwirkle from Susan McKinley Ross, Chai from Connie Kazmaier, and Point Salad from Molly Johnson. Legacy of Dragonholt by Nikki Valens is one of my favorite games to play while traveling or with just 2 players. I really enjoy the expansions to Mansions of Madness, many of which are designed by Kara Centell-Dunk. Visitor in Blackwood Grove is a brilliant game by Mary Flanagan. One of my favorite games. Scotland Yard, was designed by Dorothy Garrels. I also really like Sherlock Holmes Consulting Detective, which was co-designed by Suzanne Goldberg. Cryptid is a really clever game by Ruth Veevers. Peggy Chassenet co-designed my favorite cooperative game, TIME Stories. Those are just a few; here's a great list to consider: www.elizhargrave.com/women-nb-game-designers

      @@jameystegmaier Thanks a lot! That’s quite the list. A top 10 in the making, maybe? 😉 I will definitely have another look at their games on BGG.
      Thanks also for the link to Elizabeth's website. I am always glad to see that diversity is taken seriously.
      Best wishes from Paris!

    If it's not on purpose, is it just honest?

    You did good to not consider gender, because it has no impact in your ability to design games
