ABOUT:
Ali has been a nurse for 6 years, starting her career in a surgical step-down unit before transitioning to her current role in the PACU-where she has been for the last 5 years. She works as a level-3 clinician and a PRN Evening Charge Nurse and is an advocate for giving other specialty nursing units a closer look at life in the PACU. When she is not working, Ali is a mother to her beautiful 3-year-old and 1-year-old daughters at home.

This video was awesome. I learned a lot about what to expect of PACU. I have 29 years of Nursing in almost every specialty except, ICU, CCU. I have been a Postpartum Nurse since 2004 but in between i floated to medical surgical units. Did Home Care Nurse, Rehab, Hospice, Psychiatric etc. Im motivated to go into PACU settings. I was interviewed for a position yesterday 5/17/2024 and praying i will get the position. Im excited. Thank you for your shared knowledge with us. It was fun. Blessings 🌹
I’ve now been working in the Pacu for 3 months. Everything Ali, said about her pacu, Is true to mine. And like you said Maggie @ 49:10 6years as EMT/PCT/RN in emergency department/trauma centers I’d agree. There was a lot of learning involved before I even step foot on the floor. Anesthesia is fascinating. I’ve never been happier. My work/life balance is awesome. My most memorable patients were my two deaf patients who required interpreters. Such nice people. What an honor.

I'm a nursing student starting a clinical rotation in the PACU tomorrow and was really nervous until I watched this video! I feel like it really gave me more insight into what PACU is like and now I'm so excited to start :)

When I first started in PACU we had one anesthesiologist who would bring a pt out,, and had a blank, signed order sheet. He trusted the nurses to be able to do what they needed to do to properly care for their patients. It was a little unnerving at first.

I'm so glad I watched your video. I have over 20 years of ICU/CVICU experience. I love ICU, but I'm completely burnt out and injured on top (currently on worker's comp) PACU was always in the back of my mind, now a priority in my list of top 5 jobs I'd like to switch to when I'm ready to go back.

new grad nurse in pacu. On my 3rd month now, after having 8 weeks of orientation. Nothing significant ever happened during my supernumery period, and 4 airway complications occured in my 8-10 weeks which really unnerved me. I felt stupid every day. The PACU I'm in only separates C/Section and Paeds, and whole room is open to any type of surgery. You have to sit by your computer, and wait until a patient arrives, but you have zero ability to plan ahead for which patient. There are moments of complete calm, and then bam the 18 beds are full, nd everyone has 2 patients, and another patient arrives and the anaesthesists announces "where do I go?" < well sir there's no nurses or beds available so stay with the pt. Some anaesthetists are so god damn rude, will purposely stand in your way as you put on monitoring, give literally the type or surgery and "healthy" and walk away like bruh...
Damn I’m so sorry to hear that. It sounds like orientation didn’t prepare you for the craziness. Only 8 weeks!! Being a new nurse has so many challenges, but if that job is giving you undue stress and you don’t feel supported then tell someone about it. Don’t stay in that stress. Do you feel like you could go to your manager about how you’re feeling?
As much as their positivity is refreshing. It makes the PACU sound like a walk in the park on a sunny day. The personalities of the nurses and anesthesiologists are a challenge to manage. You definitely need a thick skin to deal. Never mind the patients that can go bad easily. You are right. You typically don't see any of
What you need to see in a 8 week orientation and then most nurses are miserable and don't want to help or understand that when that patient comes out after 3 months, it's your first time taking care of that type of patient. I wish hospital's would spend more time providing assistance to nurses that are absolutely miserable but stay in the field and definitely arent good role models. It's a difficult field. Wish people would be more honest with how it truly is. Nurses earn every dollar of what they make and should be paid at decent rate.

I’m currently in a PACU where the CRNAs run the show so much so they are hot-headed. 🙄 I’ve worked in other PACUs where they are much nicer and more respectful of PACU nurses. I just interviewed for another PACU job and it seems like this one will be better. Hope to get it. It’s also a community hospital.
That power struggle can be so toxic. Fingers crossed for you it’s a better environment
