What a Band !!! Just superb. For me the greatest ever . Rob's gone but left us with a musical legacy second to none.

6:00 Don Thompson's facility on bass is scary. I didn't know his technique was quite this astonishing, because he's got such good taste as a musician that I've never heard him go flashy just for the sake of showing he can. Here, his flash is perfect.

The guys in the band are grinning ear to ear during Don Thompson’s unbelievable bass solo!

I have both of their Direct to Disc albums recorded in the 70's. And had the privilege of seeing them live in L.A. once. Awesome!

I love the vibe: everyone wearing whatever; they are there to play music - and top notch it is. No pretensions or "show". And the end just made me grin: When this amazing music is finished, "That's it!" Pack up and go. TV camera rolling - no narcissistic "leader" or "show host" to natter away mindlessly. It's done. Enjoy it with the impact on your memory. Priceless.

In the early eighties I brought the Boss Band to Redondo Beach to produce a live recording for Sony at Howard Ramsey's Concerts By The Sea, Fantastic musicians and band!

Okay, here's the lineup of the Boss Brass on this occasion.
Like any other group, there are times when substitutes replace --for one reason or another --regular members, and there are a couple here. The depth of talent in Toronto at this time was wonderful, and there was absolutely no drop in quality.
The players ( in sections, L to R) were:
Trumpets: Guido Basso, Sam Noto, Arnie Chykoski, Erich Traugott and Dave Woods.
Trombones: Dave McMurdo, Ian McDougall, Bob Livingstone and Ron Hughes
French Horns: Brad Warnaar, George Stimpson
Reeds: Eugene Amaro, David Caldwell, PJ Perry, Pat LaBarbera and Gary Morgan
    Piano: Jimmy Dale
    Guitar: Peter Leitch
    Bass: Don Thompson
    Drums: Terry Clarke
    Percussion: Marty Morell
Rob McConnell, valve trombone, composer, arranger, leader. The tune "Start With Mrs. Beanheart" was never recorded by the band for an album, I believe.
This episode of the CBC-TV series was handed over to Rob as host, with the banter at the top with Guido Basso, who otherwise led the orchestra, which had many of the same top-rate musicians.

  • @JohnTapscott1

Terry Clarke is a top of the beat drummer (like Tony Williams with Miles) who makes the music sound like it's speeding up even when it's not. A very exciting style. Lots of subs in the band for this gig, esp. in the sax section, and it looks like Peter Leitch in for Ed Bickert.

Does anyone know where I can find this tv series (Jazz Canada) to watch, or purchase? I would like to find a specific episode. I searched the CBC but could only find a more recent series, "Phil Dwyer's Jazz Canada," which is decidedly not this.
    Many thanks.

@@brendenvarty3266 none taken. I'm 100% on board with you. This was an amazing era of superb musicians who were totally at the top of their game. They were playing so much, and playing together in all kinds of different groups, so the phrasing, pitch, concept, it's all there. I'm such a huge fan of Arnie I never get tired of listening to BB tracks of this vintage.
