Brings back good and terrifying memories of playing this chart. Damn fun, especially to improvise over, but requires every last bit of attention. Menza wrote some great stuff. Privileged to meet Louie and Pearl in my very much younger days.

This is the first song on his live album "Dynamite" (see the comment from Ed Polk below), which was my first Louie Bellson album, and so this chart was my intro to this amazing musician. A couple years later, graduating high school, my parents bought me a new drum set, and I went for a Slingerland double bass in white marine pearl just like Louie's! I still have it.
And, as a drummer, may I just say that the LB band turned me into a Bobby Shew fan? His flugelhorn solos are just astonishing - perfectly executed, tasteful, melodic. He's my hero in the brass section. While some of my trumpet-playing bandmates would go on about Maynard Ferguson, I knew that Bobby Shew was the real talent on the horns. :-)

It’s okay to like both. You don’t have to choose between Bobby and Maynard, Dizzy and Miles, etc.

The ever loving Louie Bellson joined by a host of great musicians. Louie had the chops. Buddy had the chops Gene had the chops. In reality there are many many new drummers on the scene today but that charisma is not there. All the equipment drum sponsorship and method books are useless. You have to have the talent. Krupa Bellson Rich Max Roach Joe Morelo Jack Sperling Joe Jones Philly Joe Jones and those great jazz drummers really left the main drumming ingredients for all drummers.
