Great video, my granddaddy painted in the house but instead of thinners and mineral spirits, he formulated a solution of dawn dish soap, vegetable oil and some water( read in some old master’s book) and it worked perfectly for cleaning his brushes and to thin paint down he used magic white and linseed oil. Also, that’s the cleaning solution recommended by AlexanderArt. Try it out one day

I have used this in the past and it does work great - Only issues is it might take 2 to 5 cleanings to get it really clean compared to 1 with Gamsol. But still a great option 🔥

Wild, I had used Gamsol in the past, but unfortunately cannot use it now because of lung problems. I would suggest that even though Gamsol is probably the best of the petroleum distillate products, artists should use a fan to exhaust any fumes out of a window, or at least have windows open to ventilate the room. You don’t want to spend hours in a closed room with any type of solvent.

I used to use linseed oil to thin down my paints, but after watching Bob Ross, odorless paint thinner worked much better, still got that bottle of linseed too, haven't touched it in a long time! Cheers and thanks for the info 😊👍

a little bit of linseed goes a long way haa ha ha... Linseed oil is great for making your paints a little more glossy and transparent.

Sadly I suffered a exacerbated asthma attack last Saturday morning. I can no longer use oils. Acrylics are a lot easier and safer.

Try water miscible (mixable) oil paints. I too cannot use any solvents because of lung issues. Tried acrylics, but they do give off an ammonia smell that I didn’t like. The water mixable oils don’t smell at all and behave like regular oil paint. The water cleanup is great.

WM oils are a great alternative for you - you can learn more about them here: th-cam.com/video/r7GEA8ag7Hk/w-d-xo.html

@@WildCreates Thanks! The WM video is great. It definitely is a good option for those that cannot be around solvents.

If it’s the solvents you gave issue with, traditional oils can be used without them. It’s a common misconception that acrylics are the non toxic alternative because they can be thinned with water, but the paint itself contains ammonia and formaldehyde and they do off-gass VOCs while they dry.

That shouldn't happen - I would return and exchange it if you can OR you need to crimp the metal ferrule - That will help a bunch.
