    I actually love oil painting, but turpentine makes me very ill. A few years ago I discovered water mixable oils, and fell in love. They also make mediums that are water mixable, like linseed oil, and I also found this amazing medium called Medium W by Shminke: It turns regular oil paints into water mixable paints!!
    Another plus of this particular medium is, from what I've experienced, takes only 24/48 hours for one layer to completely dry, which is so much more convenient than waiting weeks or months if you're oil painting the old fashioned way.
    I also prefer making the underpainting with acrylics and a watercolor pencil for lines: the pencil lines won't be visible when you paint over them, as opposed to using graphite (A trick I learned from Camilla d'Errico!)

      If you would want to try ‘real’ oil paints again, I suggest using Senneliers Green for Oil Solvent. It’s 100% studio friendly, has no weird smells ( except for a light scent of ‘spring’). It’s also biodegradable and non-toxic. Hope this helps!

    Look into watercolor pencils for sketching on your canvas and imprimatura/grisaille. The lines and shading of your initial drawing with watercolor pencils can be softened with brushes moistened with water, but they'll still stick to the canvas and primer if you don't overwork them. Even neutral oils like safflower or linseed oil can begin to dissolve wax based colored pencils and the color will lift into and augment your paint layer. Turpentine and mineral spirits will definitely dissolve colored pencil lines.
    I learned the hard way after doing my initial sketch with regular red colored pencil and using solvents and oils for my paint layers. The oils lifted the lines of the drawing and stained the initial paint layer. IT caused me to do more work than it should have.

    I just do wet on wet. I use just a little poppyseed oil most the time to help save a little paint and make just a tiny bit thinner depending on how it comes out of the tube. If i mess up an area I’ll scrape off that layer of paint and start over rather than try to paint over unless its a small spot so that the thickness of paint will be uniform overall.

    The only time I use solvent is for underpaintings, but switching to acrylic underpaintings doesn't seem that hard. Good thing I haven't gotten into the habit of relying on solvents.

    I have just been doing digital painting for long, recently m thinking of going for "physical" painting, I tried to re-open my acrylics tubes from school but just with the smell of it, I was like "how could I use those without feeling anything. I have become very sensitive to all solvent and all toxic stuff. So I wd like to find a way to paint without being bothered by the any toxicity have watched videos about tempera technic but I would like to try oil if it can be done naturally... In short thank you very much for your videos it is what I need 😊

    These tips only really work if you're using small brushes and small quantities of paint. If (like me) your using 3" plus brushes, doing action/colour field paintings on large canvases, we are stuck with turps unfortunately. It's either that or switch to acrylic. No amount of soapy water is getting oil paint out of my brushes, try as I might.

    I like using water mixable oils. The only issue I run into is when I do a wash or subtractive underpainting. The pain doesn't break down as well without solvent, and I need to add a lot of water to make it fluid enough. Winsor &Newton makes "water mixable thinner " but I suspect it's just OMS. What else could it be? Any tips for solvent free underpainting?

    • @Morgane.de.Back25
      @Morgane.de.Back25 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, there is but it is more in therm of brightness of the colors, the consistancy of oil painting is more like "oily, shiny,slippy stuff " than watermixable oils. But if you're new to oil, you won't notice a big difference. Except the fact that watermixable oils are so easy to clean! I personnally prefere oil painting because of the beauty of the end result, but damn watermixable oils are so convinient

    Hello Mr. Florent. Nice informative video. I have a question for you concerning cleanin the dirty brushes woith water and soap: Is it a safe and nonp-polluting way for the water? I find it could harm the environment becasuse of the oil colour ingridients, and that is why I use the mineral spirit to keep my brushes cleaned. Thank you for the future reply. 🤗

    • @FlorentFargesarts
      @FlorentFargesarts  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      You're right, it’s necessary to wipe off most pigments with a rag. (No solvent is needed there if you scrub hard, or use safflower oil to facilitate the process) Then only clean residues with soap and water.

    • @GalleryBry
      @GalleryBry 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      As long as you don’t use cademiums, cobalts, or lead based paints, most paint pigments are safe for the environment. If you use earth pigments like yellow ocher, ultramarine, and venetian red, they come from the earth and are perfectly safe for the environment.

    Diluting an acrylic underpainting heavily with water is as bad as diluting oil heavily with solvent. It just weakens the binder to a point it has no strength and degrades it.😢

      @@FlorentFargesarts - is it true that sun-thickened linseed oil accelerates drying time if a few drops are added to normal linseed oil? I have found that boiled linseed of the hardware-store variety accelerates drying, but that causes yellowing, of course. Would a few drops added to refined linseed oil also help drying and would it still cause a lot of yellowing?

    The danger of solvents is rather to be seen in the carelessness of the user - for god’s sake, just open the windows - and while we are at it, don't eat the paint and don't get it on your hands - most oil paints are not toxic, but why gamble, you could be 1 of the million that get a bad rash - for those who want to play safe or venture into the unknown - here a workaround the toxic solvents - use a slow drying oil - like safflower oil - or baby oil - instead - some artists don't wash their brushes at all, when the days work is done dip them in the oil so it's just rags and slow drying oil, and they keep the brushes for the dark paint away from the brushes for the light paint, and some extra brushes for a clean white - I personally recommend only wash your brushes with water and soap - do not use detergents - if you want them to be squeaky clean - brushes are actually not made to be cleaned often, either the hairs just get all soft and mushy or the glue gets soft, and the brush loses it form - so do what you need to do only when needed in the meantime use the oil, paper towels or better soft cloth. Just saying - and if that is not doing it, there are paints out there that you can eat - but they don't taste good, ask your kids they are called finger colors.

    It’s very frustrating to need instruction, and have to try to watch what you’re doing, read the words flashing across the screen, and hear repetitive annoying music.
