I have to agree, I've been a huge fan ever since I was a kid picking up their demon dayz album from Woolworths, but the recent releases have been some of their best work to date, song machine has got me through lockdown single handedly

The way the song is structured, with the mood shift both 2d and ScHoolboy do in delivery though-out the song, might actually be a reference to how the ghosts act in the game before and after you eat the power-pellet!
You just made my opinion on the rap part turn on its head. I never liked it, but when I read this, it made sense. The slow pace 2D makes it feel like the ghosts are just casually doing there thing, but then Schoolboy Q comes in and makes the ghosts feel the anxiety and rapid pressure of PAC man after he got a power pellet. It all makes sense now

@@Peccdesign The first time I listened to it I would agree, it felt really weird and unstructured. Upon further relistens though I've really been able to get into it. It has a very melancholic tone to it, and directly following Aries is perfect, I nearly cry every time I hear the both of them.

Best Q performance for me in a while. I don't know why but I got some "Do ya Thing" vibes which is my fav gorillaz song.
I was really scared after humanz that Gorrilaz had lost the magic. It had a few ok songs but they didnt feel like gorrilaz. The Now Now was slightly better. Had more good songs than bad. Again it felt like gorrilaz didn't have a direction. I get that's the point with gorrilaz, that they make what they want, but it felt like the inspiration wasnt there. This, however, is awesome. Each song is different with amazing guest stars. It really does feel like demon days with a modern twist.

I loved it for the reasons you did. Structurally, it was half singing and then the other half rapping. There was a moment that the singing echoed during the rapping. I guess I just wanted more of this and more in tandem or more integration. But really that's a minor quib.
Gotta love gorillaz. They just seem to deliver something new and fresh.

i wish Anthony watched the music video. i get it that he's a MUSIC nerd and he could go on and on about the beats, transitions, instrumentals, etc etc and a lot more than i ever could, but i feel its remiss to not watch the MV due to the fact that Gorillaz has always been a blend of both music and visuals and Jamie Hewlett puts in good work with the way he draws the characters
Gorillaz always produce amazing instrumentals for hip hop features
all the song machine tracks so far have been slappers and i think the format and concept is pretty fun too! i think they've also utilized their collaborators very well which is something they've gotten some flack for previously (although personally i enjoy humanz more than a lot of people seem to). this is shaping up to be a super promising project, i'm hyped to hear more
Pac-Man is honestly the best song in the entire album so far. It has those 2001/Demon Days vibes I have missed so much.
Everybody mentioning Plastic Beach and Demon Days as their best work, and I agree but also... D-Sides has some absolute jams. Shame how overlooked it is.

This was a great one, the next one seems creepy in tone, cant wait.
This is the best song to come out of song machine so far imo. It's so classic demon days/plastic beach... Peak Gorillaz sound. That funkiness and feeling like it's not quite music from our own reality, but that of these characters rather? That's what makes Gorillaz a cut above the rest for me when they're at their best, and I truly believe this is their best.
I'd love for Damon to get James Blake or Thom Yorke on one of these tracks

The only problem with this Song Machine project is that it's not structured like an album. It's basically a series of REALLY GOOD but completely disconnected songs, if they release it in vinyl form it would be basically a playlist, so I don't see Anthony giving it a very high score if that is the case.
Maybe if every single song is really good I could see him giving it a 9, but that's about it.

I think Pac-Man is my favorite of Song Machine so far. I love the whispery vocals and the bouncy synth and how it transitions to a darker, moodier piece as it goes on. I feel like the ending was too abrupt though, personally.

I feel like Gorillaz are at their best when there's something prevalent to truly rebel against in the world - must be the punky influences and the collaborative nature of Gorillaz projects.
I just wish it didn't end abruptly, would have felt even more like a classic track if there was a bit of reprisal from 2D.

This also reminds me of the wonder.land project that Damon was involved with in certain places.
Absolutely love the animation particularly the reference to Charlie Brown and Noodle's body movements especially walking down stairs, Hewlett's really great at drawing postures and it's so tricky to draw proportionally. Let's face it when it comes to music Damon does it well! 😊 I love the Jim Carrey sample, adds a fun element!

Let me expand on that. I was absolutely reminded of Demons Dayz which is probably my favorite Album by Gorillaz (including Dsides with that because some of my favorite tracks are off that album as well) and while I love the more frenedic tracks and certainly miss those, this was an amazing return to form that is really nice to hear. I didn't know what what to think of ScHoolboy Q's flow to start but as the track went on it really grew on me and he's another artist I'll be looking more I to thanks to our boy Melon.
