      I do. Hunting big game, like moose, is important especially since the number of Predators that normally hunt them has gone down (at least here in Finland). So when people hunt certain number of them every year, their population doesnt get too big for the area to support them. Which would lead in a mass deaths of moose.

    • @klaus3794
      @klaus3794 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      What about the human population? Is that not going to be far TOO BIG? We cannot control nature but we destroy it! So sad. Leave the moose alone, nature will take care, believe or not.

    • @Far-North-Bushcraft-Survival
      @Far-North-Bushcraft-Survival  7 ปีที่แล้ว +81

      Klaus S I appreciate your principles. However in order for there to be life, there MUST be death. There is just no way of getting around that. If you feel bad for animals and decide that you will no longer eat of animal flesh, that is good and honorable but you are still literally killing the plants that you eat. It has been scientifically proven that plants grow better in a calm environment rather than a chaotic one. There are also studies that seem to prove that plants have a level of intelligence. The fact that you kill and destroy your plant food is in reality no more honorable than me killing an animal for food? There is just no way to get around the need for death in order to have life other than you taking your own life so that you no longer consume other beings lives. I do not recommend that personally. People who live close to nature understand this fact as they see it all around them in many many various ways. Nature *IS NOT KIND*. Nature is vicious and extremely cruel. I do not enjoy killing animals. However I do enjoy feeding my family good highly nutritious meat that has *NO* chemicals and is totally organic healthy and nutritious. We also have our own garden and eat fresh raw plants as well. In other words we eat very similar to how man has fed himself every since man first walked this earth. I can see and appreciate your kind thoughts toward animals but in reality, you are misled by political correctness and lack of understanding of how nature really works.

      Sorry no processing videos. We just were too interested in getting it done and in the freezer to stop and video. A very generous neighbor thankfully loaned us a powerful commercial quality electric meat grinder to grind the burger so that we did not have to use our hand grinder that we have been using for the last 20 plus years.

      Here in the south-east of Norway hunting with dogs is the rule. Mostly it´s a group of hunters teaming up, and a dog is let loose to find and mark the moose. A good dog will tell the owner what is happening by the character of the barking and the hunters will sit at strategic posts where the moose is likely to find a route of escape while driven forward by the dog.
      A few use dogs on a leash trained not to bark at all while finding a fresh track and locating the animal. A good trained leashdog will then be let loose and pinpoint the animal by not being too agressive or loud, but still keep the senses occupied with the dog in stead of the approaching hunter.

      Glad you enjoyed the trip. I copied and pasted here the reply that I made to you on a different video so that others can see here my reply.
      The boat is made by Yukon Freightworks Canoe Company in Delta Junction
      Alaska. It is an epoxy resin fiberglass which is much heavier duty
      than polyester resin fiberglass. It is a tough boat and I am very
      pleased with it. However I was not pleased with the manufacturer. I
      will not go into it here but I do not wish what we went through on
      anybody. The motor is a 23 horse surface drive mud motor made by
      Copperhead mud motors. I am fairly pleased with the motor as well but
      am not real happy with the motor boat combo as the motor just does not
      have enough poop for the kind of weights I carry in this boat. I am
      using an eight inch prop and I'm told that a wider diameter prop would
      be more efficient but i have yet to try it. I hope that the wider prop
      will be my answer.

    I am sure glad you took us along! Your rough editing and the wonderful lack of showing off in any way is a far better calling method in the YT-woods than the bunch of egofocusing paradaders perform if you want to attract staying followers :-) I´m glad I already subcribed so I didn´t miss this one.
    The comments on this being an example of discusting trophy hunting are far off, and to those who just feel sad: A humble hunter will also feel sad for the magnificent creature killed, along with feelings of mastering the task set, thankfullness for the food and afterthought of what could be done even better the next time. A real hunter does not feel victorious when taking care of the pray so it doesn´t get spoiled.

      The scapula bone is quite popular here for calling purposes but they often times are not very durable. I actually had a moose scapula with me but it got too beat up and damaged to continue using. The oil bottle will be good for at least another year if I care to use the same bottle. I have seen pieces of plywood fashioned to look like moose antlers also used, as well as "action packer" lids. In the past, I have also called in moose using the calling "horn" to scrape brush that I was using in this video. When they are deep in the rut, sounds do not have to be real exact to work.

    Hello from El Dorado Springs, MO! Congratulations on a successful moose hunt! How many pounds of meat did you end up with? I could tell those antlers were heavy by the way you had to get up with them. The second bull you encountered in the river looked like a big boy! You guys take care!!

    • @Far-North-Bushcraft-Survival
      @Far-North-Bushcraft-Survival  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      We never weighed the processed meat since we were mostly concerned with processing it and getting it in the freezer as soon as possible. Generally though most mature bull moose will produce about 400 - 450 pounds of processed meat. That second bull was about a 48 - 50 inch rack.

      They are very good steaks. We have sampled the backstraps so far as well as ground meat burger. Though this bull was in the rut, The meat remains unaffected and is high quality. The same can not be said for caribou in the rut.

      We did not weigh the moose so do not know but most mature bull moose will put about 400 - 450 pounds of meat in the freezer. The moose antlers were 62 inches across and weigh 67 pounds as of today. They proabably weighed approximately 70 pounds at time of harvest. Yes it took Connie and I a LONG time to field dress that moose and get him to the boat.

      Connie and I *DO* believe that the Lord almighty himself provided this particular bull for our needs. There were many many many miracles during this whole trip. Oh there was plenty of opportunity for things to go wrong and make a tough time of it for us but everything went very smooth. So many things went so smoothly that it had to have been divine intervention.

      Sounds like a 30.06 or a .308. and its either a winchester model 70 or a remington 700. You can tell by the way the moose is hunched up before the shot that it wasn't the first shot. He probably emptied the gun and only got the last shot on camera. when your hunting like that every step that moose takes away from the river adds hours to the recovery so you shoot till it drops. I'm a moose hunter and I use a 30.06 browning blr.

    What a magnificent creature that bull moose was. I hope the meat will feed and nourish you well and I also hope the moose numbers are sustainably managed. They belong here just as much as you do. This is far better than meat raised on farms and slaughtered in abattoirs especially those abattoirs that slaughter animals according to religious laws!!

    Great video Lonnie. Really enjoy watching you both working together to make it living a natural life. Raised my family on wild meat (elk and deer)'in northeast Oregon's Wallowa mountains 45 years ago. This vid brought back great memories. My wife and I wasted nothing from our harvests. Cracked the marrow bones and boiled them with onions, celery and carrots and canned the broth. Sure miss the real mincemeat pies we made! Arthritis has hit my feet hard so can't hunt as much or as far but still going, just make the young "bucks" do the heavy work (I still have the smarts 😜). Best to you and your wife. Thanks again!

    Why do you kill these. Magnificent animals?

    • @Far-North-Bushcraft-Survival
      @Far-North-Bushcraft-Survival  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Because me and my family need to eat. Here in Alaska we still live a subsistent lifestyle somewhat like the original inhabitants of this land. We eat meat and so therefore either we kill and harvest organically grown free range wild big game animals, or we go to the store and buy drug injected antibiotic filled feedlot raised excessively fat unhealthy beef that someone else killed and harvested. Given the two choices, I like my method much better for both my family as well as the life that is required so that we can eat. I don't enjoy killing but having lived closed to nature for most of my life I realize that in order for their to be life there as to be death even if you are a vegetarian. Living close to nature I harvest my own meat rather than let someone else do it for me.

    how do you keep the meet from spoiling for those 3-4 days of traveling back ? or is it that it is cold enough outside ?

    • @Far-North-Bushcraft-Survival
      @Far-North-Bushcraft-Survival  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes the cold temperatures helped us immensely. It was below freezing at night followed by cool days. A person should have the meat in sturdy meat bags (to keep flies off of the meat) and hang the meat up off the ground every night when making camp for the night. This will allow the meat to dry out on the surface and "crust over". The dry exterior will discourage bacteria from forming on the meat.
