Also, you might have noticed that the benders in the opening are all characters from the show (Pakku for water, Gyatso for air, Azula for fire)... except for the earthbender. The earthbender is actually supposed to be Toph, but the character was drastically reworked between seasons to the point that the final version is practically a different character. As originally envisioned, Toph was male, was around Zuko's age, and was going to be your average high school hammy jock-type character, to contrast with the more intellectual and down-to-Earth Sokka. I personally think the final version is leagues better. Something else about Toph that I think is worth highlighting, that I honestly don't think many people picked up on, is that she's actually largely self-taught. I think that's a big part of why she's such an effective fighter. Because she developed her own moveset, it's inherently difficult for a traditional earthbender to go head-to-head with her, as she doesn't open or react the way they'd expect her to.
IT'S TOPH BABY!!! Bless her VA Jessie Flower for voicing one of the best animated characters in history! I always love it when people use certain main characters from Avatar when discussing the traits of a great character, and Toph is no exception. She has proven and will continue proving throughout the course of the show that she is not your typical princess; people like her parents take her blindness as something making her helpless in society, when in reality, she is a powerful and capable combatant who uses that blindness in such a creative way. It's genuinely tragic how she was secluded from virtually everyone against her own wishes.

The Earth Kingdom's relation to the Fire Nation is a lot like WWII France's relation to Germany. The Vichy French were the French people who joined the Nazis to rule over conquered France; the Earth Kingdom has people in it who are okay with living in the new regime, people fighting against the Fire Nation, and people who just want the war over and do not care who wins it.
Why do people who say stuff like this almost always have a furry pfp? Not hating, it's just an unexplained trend I've noticed and I'm curious about the correlation.

I think this is a great time to point out that it has been confirmed that canonically airbending doesn't look like anything and the visuals are only things we see as a viewer to help us understand the action on screen better so to anybody who looks at ang when he is airbending they can only see it if he's affecting things around him with his air like blowing dust up or redirecting fire they'll see it getting redirected, or they'll see ripples on water from the wind

This war has been going on for 100 years, and the Earth Kingdoms still stand. There's no pressing information suggesting anything in the war is going to substantially change anytime soon. People grow HIGHLY apathetic to war as it drags on, provided it doesn't affect them. Look at Ukraine for an example there. Plus, the Fire Nation isn't out to exterminate the other nations, only to conquer them, so to your average joe trying to make a quick buck, it doesn't really matter who's in charge so long as you're well off.

In canon no one can actually see Aang's airbending since its literally just air. The audience gets a visual but to everyone at the match it looks like Aang basically did nothing which is why they assumed it was fake

I didn’t remember this episode being as funny as it is, (except for the boulder is over his conflicted feelings part) it’s a really good episode! Also, when i was little i never caught that Toph ran away, i genuinely thought that the dad was an indecisive bitch (but toph running away makes so much more sense) ALSO also, classic eating character gets me every time
Some people want to get the avatar as an expectation of bettering relations, as the fire nation has been in control for so long that everyone alive only knows they strength, not the avatar’s
Greed might also play a role in it. It's been proven time and again that just about anyone can be convinced to do the wrong thing for a big enough monetary gain.
