Hello Vera. Interestingly, after a lovely lunch with my brother in a BIG fashion mall yesterday, we strolled the mall. We had fun trying on sunglasses and I found a pair of high-brand sunglasses that looked amazing on me. I was not in the market to buy and hence, I just took a photo of me wearing them. When I browsed photos from yesterday’s trip, I compared the photo (unintentionally) with a photo wearing my current glasses, I realized that my current glasses look just as amazing. No need for a new look.

It is such a relief for me when I can walk away from an unnecessary purchase. I realize I have purchased so many things that I not only didn't need, I didn't even want it!! Then I'd hand it off to a charity shop weeks later. I'm so glad I'm out of that mind set.
What a great idea to take a picture & be done with it. I'm going to keep that in mind!

Great video. Something I heard from TH-camr Abundantly Minimal is to realize that everything we own will eventually become garbage. Before buying something new, we need to think about how we will discard things when they no longer function or we no longer want them. I cringe at the realization of how much garbage I am already responsible for! Yikes!
    Thanks again, Vera!

I have been on my minimalist journey for almost 2 years. I have decluttered/ purged a lot of stuff. And I think one of my best tips is to keep a NO BUY list in your phone, post it on your fridge and in your office. I am currently in the process of going through ALL of my personal belongings and making a note of what I dont need any more of. And I do the same for my children's belongs, and household goods.

We have moved a few times in the past 6 years and I actually keep notes on what we have learned from every specific place we have lived in. The places we have lived in have actually taught us a lot. Things we never even knew abou ourselves and our preferences. And that way we know some very specific ideas about the house we want to build one day and how so many little things relate to our personalities. Lovely channel !

I usually avoid shopping like the plague now. I make a short list, walk in and make my few purchases and then out the door I go. I keep my list extremely short because I believe that the longer you are in the store...the easier it can be for them to bait you or lure you to make unnecessary purchases. Since I like to walk everywhere, I just walk to the store for present needs and then walk my few items back home. It keeps me minimalistic and healthy fit as well.

Yes, this is why I now wear dresses, because it is pretty much a complete outfit and I do not need to worry about what to match it with. I recommend picking out 15 favorite complete outfits and hang them in your closet as such. Have 15 outfits for cold weather and 15 outfits for hot weather. Pick 1-2 pairs of shoes for each hot/cold season. 1 lightweight jacket and 1 heavy parka.

100% true and i have always done this too the letter, far too much of this trying too keep up with the joneses,, people may not understand me, but i do have a mind of my own, i just keep people happy by showing a good attitude and don't worry at all about possesions, this girl is so right, i"m almost sure this world would be a better place if one worried less about must have, but we are all different and if it makes that person happy well good!

I'm minimalist for the visual peace and the sense of order. I love your furniture in the background, it's not cluttered up. Why do people buy beautiful furniture just stick figurines, books, ornaments, etc on top. A plant, maybe a family photo to me is enough. I just de-cluttered again this morning, I just need something to function the way it should and the form will follow.

I follow most of these steps and it makes me really happy. I love the tip about avoid window-shopping that's a good one. Im Swedish and it is ridiculous how much people compare themselves to others in our culture. I have a very blessed life and less is certainly more, I do ave a few luxury items that I treasure and I don't think it is luxury anymore if you buy luxury "all the time" like many people on social media do or pretend to do lol. Today I opted out of any text messages from companies that want me to buy stuff. It is easy to get dragged into looking at their sites etc when they scream "60% off" . All the best

Vera, yes, getting my bills emailed was one of the best moves I have made in destressing my life. The other thing you mention is the buying of one thing and needing an additional item for it. I don’t do this with clothes, but I experience it with photography.😬 I end up with the most expensive hobbies: photography and golf.🤔 On a different note, would you do a video on how to travel to The Netherlands on a minimalist budget? What to see, what to eat, and where to stay? A generalist approach is fine since you don’t live every where.😉

Thank you Teresa! And yes that's a great suggestion, I'll think about if I have enough knowledge and skill to make a video like that. But it's a great country to visit 😄

If you receive an actual thing, you need to give up a thing from your inventory. Or your place is getting more cluttered.

Since you talked about inventory apps: LibraryThing is great for books. It has a barcode scanning functionality, and you can create a catalogue that you can easily search online/in the app or share with friends. It's been a very helpful tool to help me see what i have and "shop" my own bookcase, it can help friends avoid giving me books I already have, and if you lend books to people you can keep track of who has them.

Hey, Vera, I just found your channel a few days ago, so I've been binge watching :) Thanks for these great hacks. I'm definitely trying to cut out a lot of unwanted extras. I think another good reason to say no to "free" things is because the price of the freebie is built into the manufacturer's/store's overhead, so it isn't really free. And if it's something that comes in plastic, that's problematic for the environment. As for gift cards, I prefer to go the cash route. When I was younger, it was thought not quite right to give someone cash as a gift, so stores came up with the idea of gift cards, which are still just cash, but can only be spent in certain places. Where I live these cards are usually plastic and one of the stores actually charges a fee on top of the cost of the gift card itself. We sometimes receive gift cards we never use from well-meaning people; I feel bad about it because it means they wasted their money.

    • @SimpleHappyZen
      @SimpleHappyZen  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Welcome to the channel and thanks for watching my videos! :) Yes I do agree with your point about gift cards. They are wasteful, and it's still like cash but you can only spend it in a limited place. So in that sense, cash is actually a lot better.

    The mug question: penguin wins!
I have a quick addition to tip 11: time instead of stuff. I got my husband tickets for a short movie festival next door, his sisters family invited us to a summer toboggan run, which both was a lot of fun.

Ahaha the giraaf I gave that mug to my best friend bc he broke his. I follow 1 to 1 rule, 2 days thinking over, I am doing one thing different. For example I declutterer all my short crop sleeve tops I had 10 so I got rid of all but got 2 I really like so now I own 2 but are new and exactly taste I like. I do this technique also mirrors ( had four now own 1 second hand but I got it) with shower gels make up sometimes. Is working very well. I made fantastic progress but in the end stuff still comes in my home. The thing I notice with minimalism is the change of mind is, life change and is fun owning less.. I was raised to believe more is fun but in reality less gives more joy more care. This xmas I'm broke so I gave my best friend my man watch gschock and I will make custom cards

I get attention yet I don't follow the trend as a new minimalist. I wear knits in the winter, that I bought on sale:0). I buy soap as gifts, and experiences as gifts, or only what the person needs, and I confirm this by looking in their house, and ask them, what they need, (usually it is soap, cleaning stuff, socks, food), and I check when I am at their house. lol.
