Thank you all for the outpouring of love during this hard time! It means so much to us. Several people have watched this video and proceed to tell me how to cool my rabbits in the summer. While I really appreciate the educating comments, please bear in mind that most of these options were not available to me due to the power being out for the duration of this time. I was relying on the portable AC unit and was not expecting the power to go out like it did. Otherwise I would have froze bottles, tiles, etc... this situation was unpredictable and really opened my eyes to how much we rely on electricity for so many things that we do. I want to keep these educating comments up for people who may not know these tips and tricks.
Here in Kentucky we had the same issue. My doe delivered and she had 11 kits but we lost 10. So I had her and the kit in my home for 2 wks. Sorry you had to deal with it. Just letting you know I understand
I was raised on a farm too and I fully understand what you are going through with livestock past and believe me I experienced several power outage on the dairy farm and milking 83 head of cows. Don't be afraid of electricity just respect it!!! I have been electrician and plumber for the past 51 years !!! What state are you in ???
Can’t image how difficult talking/sharing the loss of babies and Tundra… You did all you could to get through an exhausting situation, please go easier on yourself. Heartfelt love and prayers from Charlotte NC to you & all the bunnies. ❤️❤️❤️
I'm so sorry about Tundra. We had the same situation in NW Indiana, but I only have 1 bun and she's still inside. That definitely is not your fault, I pray you heal from your loss 🙏🏻
110° F is considered a hot day where I live in South Africa and not yet a heatwave which is quite a bit worse. During the last heatwave it was 93° by eight-thirty in the morning. Three things are important when keeping rabbits cool and that is choosing a heat-tolerant breed, cooling down the environment or assisting the rabbit to cool down. Where the breed of rabbit is concerned, there is a South African breed developed to be heat tolerant called the Phendula though even that breed has its limits. Rabbits radiate heat through the ears and the larger and thicker (meaning more blood vessels) the ears the greater the cooling effect. Concerning cooling the environment, air conditioning, cross ventilation, circulating fans and an evaporation-cooled air inlet with extractor sides on the opposite side of the rabbit enclosure are all useful to keep rabbits cool. Another measure is to have a colony styled enclosure where a number of large diameter water pipes that are covered with at least a foot of earth to serve as emergency burrows where either all the males or all the females can be relocated during a heatwave - this is the most efficient and natural way for rabbits to simply stay out of heat in the mid day. The closer to the ground the more heat is radiated on a hot day which is something well known to the automotive community where off-road vehicles have snorkels primarily to suck in cooler air far above the ground. Also shield rabbit cages and tractors from sunlight as far as possible especially the afternoon sun from the west which is the hottest. Rabbits cool down by helping them to radiate heat from their ears which is what makes fans blowing directly on to them so effective. I have my doubts whether iced water etc really cool rabbits down though many swear by it. What does help is to provide water in deep dishes on hot days since rabbits will drink more water from a dish than from a system with a nipple. Also exchange the tepid water in the dish with cool water at least once on a hot day. Rabbits do not pant like dogs or sweat as humans do therefore the water itself does not cool them down but drinking a lot of water will assist in preventing vital organs from failure and shutting down on a hot day. Take care that heat does not radiate from either below or above a wire cage and use insulating hay, straw or cardboard if heat does radiate on to the cage. A makeshift swamp cooler which is simply wet cloth or hessian material placed on top of the wire cages might help to cool by evaporation though the cooling effect is limited by humidity in the air. The coolest room in the house is generally the bathroom and if need be relocate rabbits to the bath-tub, the shower cubicle or the bathroom itself in order to keep them cool during the hottest part of the day.
Hi Tiffany, I am so impressed with all you do for your animals. Thanks for sharing. I'm not sure this helps anyone, but down here in Florida, I found feeding my rabbits frozen vegetables in the heat of the afternoon helps and they love them!
I understand what hard time feels like and sometimes it's good to know that you aren't the only one who is going through something so difficult thanks for this video it has helped me realize that I'm not the only one who feels like this
I'm so sorry for your lose, what a hard time! Thank you for sharing this hard time with others, it can help people see what can happen and what to plan for (maybe prevent something like this happening to someone else). Hugs!
I am so sorry for your losses. 😔 When we had to replace our fridge on a tight budget we went to a scratch and dent store. They have used appliances they have fixed. We got our new to us refrigerator for a few hundred bucks instead of thousands. Maybe insurance can reimburse you afterwards?
Up here in Michigan it was insane. Thankfully we didn't lose power. But the heat was horrible. I was out every few hours with frozen water bottles, and every hour on the hour with frozen washcloths. (I have no washcloths left in my house😂) I also had a litter of 5 Silver fox babies whose eyes were JUST opening so I was adding frozen washcloths to their nest box. It was a never ending process. Then I had work in the evenings for 5 hours and I was constantly stressing about them while I was at work. Today, it is in the low 70s, NO humidity, and a nice steady breeze, and I am very thankful that we did not lose ANYONE. I was preparing myself to lose most of my herd, and I honestly do not know why I didn't. But everyone is OK, they're happy, they're all binkying, and they're all eating like horses. Some stopped eating in the heat and I was worried about that. Just know, that you did absolutely everything you could possibly do in the moment. ❤ So many breeders have lost rabbits these past few days and they were doing everything possible as well. Like you said...its just one of those things that happens. It's a part of homesteading that we do NOT like, but it's still apart of homesteading and being a homesteader. It's apart of how we grow and learn.❤ I'll be thinking of and praying for you in the days to come.❤ Love you Tiffany!
So sorry about Tundra 💔 but don’t blame yourself. You did all you knew to do at the time. Also really appreciate your transparency because when dealing with these issues it would be really easy to highlight how well you handled things and skim over some of the hard things/realities of dealing with livestock. Love all your videos! ❤️
That is just so sad. I'm sorry you had to deal this. We lost power for about 2 days down here in N.Kentucky. I was putting ice in the chicken's water. And I would put ice in casserole dishes of water for my two little does. They were only 3 months at the time so they shared a cage. It was sad to see them laying in the ice water cause it was so hot. But they made it through. I'll be keeping your rabbits in my prayers. And you and your family as well.
Sorry for your loss, I also lost power , in southern Ohio , was worried about water for the anime, love your information about the Cremes, this breed is one of my favorite, I am glad to see your passion for them , thanks for your hard work in promoting and preserving them !! Best of luck with your moving
Coming from Oklahoma I know exactly how you feel. I lost a momma to some 3 week old kits. It's been a week and they are still alive! I'm so sorry about your girl and her baby. Prayers your life gets alot easier soon! I love your videos!
I had the same happen to me except it was a snow storm and a power outage so the buns heater went out and some of them got to cold. I brought in as many as I could but ran out of cages to bring them in with and I had no toats so I gave them blankets and lots of hay but my two older ones died.
I am so sorry 😞 I almost lost a momma and her whole litter we live in central Indiana and have had a heat warning as well it's so scary, I am so thankful to have you as a resource! I am praying for you your family. Sending love from central Indiana 💖
Wow, Tiffany, very sorry for your losses. Your heat indexes in Northern Indiana were the same as we were having here in Oklahoma! It’s nearly impossible to prepare for that, especially when a storm has knocked out your power! Hoping things will get back to normal for you ASAP.
Hank you Jules. Definitely a situation I was not prepared for, otherwise I would have frozen a bunch of bottles for the rabbits. Definitely need to think of a solution in case this ever happens again.
So sorry! I lost a special rabbit with kits in this heat wave too. Such a sad day. It seems like the darker rabbits get hit worse with the heat, their dark fur absorbs the heat so much more.
I’m new to your channel and I’m learning so much. I am new to raising bunnies as well. I am in Connecticut and our summers are usually so hot and humid and I needed this information Now I need to come up with a plan for my bunnies for terrible summer heat.
I know this video was a year ago, but if anybody else runs into this situation, a single 10 W solar panel will run five 8 inch computer fans. With that kind of heat, you definitely had full sun and it would be just a matter of setting up enough fans and panels to get that airflow going again. In an emergency, I would also throw towels over the top of the cages and wet them down. The combination of solar panel, fans and evaporation from wet towels will drop the temperature as much as 30°. I’m sorry for your losses. It sounds like a really rough week.
I'm sorry you lost Tundra. What a beautiful rabbit she was. Her legacy lives on in her kits. The weather is humbling much of the time. I'll pray your appliances are replaced quickly.
Hopefully before this ever happens again you guys'll be able to get (some) Generators Soon and/or figure out new ways to help prepare for emergencies like this! It sucks that these things happen, but hopefully it at least teaches us to think of new way to combat future disasters!
Oh, no. I am so sorry. We are i101 in Salt Lake today. It is dry heat.. like an oven.. so I can spray water on the ground near the hutches and tractor for evaporative cooling BUT it still makes me nervous.
I just started following 2 days ago and I'm so sorry to hear about Tundra. I'm new to rabbits and have only been doing them for going on 3 months. I am going to try the frozen water bottles and such this summer. I live in Michigan it can get bad here. I don't see what you could have done different. I hope the move went well and look forward to more video to learn about what I am in for in the future. 👍
Sorry for your loss and stress! Unknowns & feeling helpless is so difficult. I don't know if this will help...I saw a video about a guy that puts storage boxes in the ground for his rabbits. He said it is cool in the summer & warm in the winter. He has runs for each rabbit into the boxes. The channel is "The Rabbitry Center" The video is "Stop Using Nesting Boxes". It may not be able to help you this time, but it could in the future. Hope things have improved. Hope you have no more bumps in moving!
Just had a storm sweep through that knocked a tree over our entire garden, just got done clearing it out, and trying to revive the plants. The damage is pretty bad, not sure what is going to survive. Not the same I know, but it just happened so the storm thing brought it up. I am sorry for your loss, that sucks.
I am so sorry 😭 especially after all that work out into it. I would be so frustrated. Luckily our garden didn’t sustain much damage, miraculously. But I would have definitely preferred losing tomato plants instead of miss Tundra, for sure. Hang in there friend 💜
@@TealStoneHomestead Yeah, losing the whole garden is preferable to losing any animals. Lost seven 11 chickens, including both brooders, over two incidents that I could have prevented had I more experience (been raising them for a year), so I understand the feeling responsible/feeling like a failure. It's a straight kick to the gut. Still trying to restore the flock from those. Sorry don't know why I am droning on about my problems. Thank you for your kind words and keep moving forward.
No not Tundra 😞. It sucks to have those unexpected losses out of control, wish I had advice. We put up some tarps on the back side of our garage to try to give some more shade. We lost power for over 24 hours last winter and it was 52 degrees in the house, no stove or microwave. Night time was candlelights (ikea has cheap 90 hour candles that work great and they also have holders to prevent them from knocking over, I did actually “test” one by knocking it over and it put itself out immediately so that made me feel a bit better) Roads were solid ice so we couldn’t get anywhere either. My Yorkie spent most of the day cuddled in my hoodies or under the blankets with my toddler, but luckily the rabbits handled it just fine (including the nest box babies).
Even in uncomfortable situations you manage to keep your buns looking cozy. I am sad for you about Tundra and the lost bunnies. This weather sweeping the country has been brutal.
I hate days like that! I had my favorite chicken and two pet fish die the same day. I was very attached to that hen. She would come up and give me good morning hugs. That is sad. I hope you find another good rabbit soon. I have had my pet lionhead die too.
So very sorry for the loss of Tundra and her baby. So strange how these freak storms are going through and extreme changes in weather. I went through this when I was starting up my rabbit tree and finding out how they do not do well in the heat... A lady in town didn't want her rabbits anymore so I took the eight off of her hands... I live in California and it was over 115°. Amazingly the rabbits made the trip out 45 miles into the country. I did lose one and then for the next couple of weeks continued to lose three more. It took me 2 1/2 years between heat and rattlesnakes eating babies to finally have rabbits to eat and sell. I have gone through many power outages and having three incubators going at the same time needing to be plugged in. We have a generator now but where my rabbits are there is no power. I do ice bottles for the young ones or mamas when it is really extreme. Not sure if you are buying your own place as I haven't watched your videos for a little bit, but if you can build them an underground place. Now I'm gonna have to go over and buy you a coffee! 🤑 Much love and best of luck!
Our heat wave really started yesterday with a high of 95F and the lows are averaging mid 60s and highs of 80-90F for the next 10 days at least! Glad all survived except the two bunnies and the quail hen... hopefully things don't get worse. I know how hard it can be when the trials of life seem to just pile up all at once or hit you one after another. Just know that seeing how you keep going and pursue your dream inspires me to do the same!
So, so very sorry, Tiffany, for your huge loss. It just hurts so much. We are experiencing a heat wave also. Normally in Texas it is hottest in late July and August, however we have been experiencing +/-100 degrees and higher for the last week and it appears it is not ending anytime soon. My rabbits are all outside under a large carport and I don’t have any way to bring them inside. So here is wheat I have done: -Bought 5 Barn Fans from Tractor Supply, -Bought 2 mister systems from Lowes -Bought 20, 12”x12” ceramic tiles from Home Depot -Bought “to go” plastic lidded containers from Sam’s I freeze the ceramic tiles. I exchange them 3-4 times per day. My Silver Fox love them. Young and adult. I turn on the mister system on around 3-4p when the heat will be the highest. I give them frozen water bottles or the frozen ice blocks at some point during each day. They have all survived so far. I really worry about what I’d do if the power went out. I know it is a possibility. I just thank God every day it stays on. My rabbits don’t eat much now-even fresh greens and veggies. They don’t move away much from the ceramic tiles. Facing months of this regimen is daunting to me. Because of the risk of Hemoragic Disease here, I don’t have the option of putting them in a tractor under a tree.
You are so courageous, Tiffany. Your new place will offer you so many other options. I love the stream/creek you will have. Solar backup may be good options for you there. I know I wish we could afford it here on our 10 acres. Maybe one day. WISH I could help you. You have done so much for me. If it hadn’t been for you, I would not own a Rabbitry or known what to do for them.💜💜💜💜💜
Today perhaps we should all check to see if we have plenty of batteries to operate fans for ourselves & loved ones. I am also going to make up water bottles/washloths/veggies & freeze them. Frozen chopped spinach stays frozen a long time & can be utilized in a cooler to keep other things cold. +Blessings+
I'm sorry you had to deal with this. We had a bad heat wave paired with a lot of smoke a couple years ago and we had to bring all of our rabbits into the house. We scrambled and built emergency cages out of hardware cloth, they weren't great but they allowed us to bring everyone inside. We threw plastic down on a floor in the house and put shavings over it. It was a mess, but it let us scramble for an emergency. 10/10 recommend having extra hardware cloth and J clips around in case you ever need them!
You are a wonderful rabbit owner. Great job at thinking on your toes! I think for the next heat wave this coming week I will be bringing them all back inside for a day or two.
Girlllll...I feel your pain. I was freezing buckets and bowls of ice during the night to put in the cages during the day. I'm in the midwest not too far from you. I have two litters currently. Lost one of my babies during the storm Monday night :(
I’m so sorry to hear about Tundra :( I’ve lost a few Silver Fox to heat during those worst heat waves and I think the feeling of failure is unavoidable, no matter what you do or don’t do. Sounds like you did all you could and things can just happen!
Oh man!!! I'm so sorry for your losses😪 don't beat yourself up, you did the best you could. That's all we can do when Mother Nature throws us curve balls- last year, BC, Canada, we had what they now call 'heat domes', it was BRUTAL!! You know it's hot when the kits are melting! Those tipped ears are adorable Keep your chin up. Things will get better!🙂
So sorry about Tundra, I always liked seeing her videos she's just a cutie. Don't blame yourself, I'm in Michigan (I met you at Shipshewana with my silver Foxes) and it's been brutal here too.
also make sure that your appliance technician who inspects them for your insurance claim knows about the lightning strike. i feel it was the lightning that caused the damage not the power coming back on
It is always hot here in Texas during summer. I see you have a deep freeze. If you rinse 2 liter soda bottles out, peel paper off, and put them in the freezer you would have for emergencies. Here I have a few for every rabbit. That way as one is too thawed out and not cold enough I swap for a new one. It really helps with the shade trees over and the bottles in pens. Sorry about Tundra and baby.
Thanks Tracy. I would have had bottles if I hadn’t been relying on the portable AC unit. I just wasn’t expecting the power to go out 😭 the temperatures swung from the 60-70’s to 98 degrees with a real feel of 113, in just a matter of days. It definitely made me feel powerless when it came to caring for my animals.
I was planning Silver Fox here in South Carolina... It's been sooo hot here, omg!!! All the groups I'm in are reporting out rabbit deaths every day. I'm seconding guessing my plan and thinking it might be wise to choose from heat tolerant rabbits instead. :(
You are going to want to get stock from breeders that keep there rabbits in similar temps. Breed for heat tolerance and if you are setting up an outside rabbitry try to put it in a shady spot with a lot of air flow. We will mist ours too.
I'm sorry for your loss - been there. One thing I do now is I put ice and water in dish pans for my rabbits. They love it and will drink more. I'll spray their ears, too.
Definitely would have done the ice thing, if we hadn’t lost power! By morning almost all of our ice had melted 😫 but I will definitely go buy some next time.
@@TealStoneHomestead I'm sorry if my comment seemed like I was being critical, apologies if it seemed so. I was only making a general heat tip for anyone. You definitely did everything above and beyond. I commend you 💜
Also I had my silver fox midnight give birth a couple months ago and she ate her babies and didn't pull any fur and I noticed that she hasn't touched her food or water and she was really skinny I could put my whole hand around ur and feel her bones but took the water bottle away and gave her a bowl now she's doing good I think she' just didn't know how to use the water bottle
I literally feel your pain. In Ohio we had a tornado several miles away along with the thunder storms. Glenn and I were out in the worst of the storm trying to get the top back over the top of the rabbit cages. We had our power flicker a couple times and it took out our a/c. During the excessive heat warnings we were 2 days without a/c. It was 92 in the house when we went to bed one of those nights. I’ve been putting ice bottles in with the rabbits, but one of my momma rabbits was dead a few hours ago when I went to refill water. Her babies are a little over 3 weeks.
@@TealStoneHomestead I feel so fortunate. When the momma bunny succumbed to the heat, I moved her 7 babies in with the other momma and her 5 babies. Even though the babies were right at 2 weeks old, I was hoping the other momma would accept the 7. She never batted an eye brow. And this morning I actually saw one of the orphans nursing. She has let all the babies climb all over her. I’m actually shocked.
The momma is the daughter of the chocolate buck I bought off you. Oh, and she had 2 lilacs in her litter. It looks so funny to see black, chocolate and lilac babies hopping around.
I just moved all the babies from the chocolate momma. (about a week late). I did not lose a single baby. I actually saw the momma nursing the black babies several times even though they were 3 weeks old when I put them in with her. I can't believe they all survived.
I'm glad you didnt lose too many, its still sad about Tundra tho💙. I've been noticing the tipped ears on a few of mine when it gets really hot. I figured that's what it was when I saw it a few times, but it was weird, I was a little concerned.
im so sorry for ur loss, i have a rabbit to, i miss her so much if she died, same with luna my kitten. your not a failure girl, it happens with heat waves :( hfy

I had the same happen to me except it was a snow storm and a power outage so the buns heater went out and some of them got to cold. I brought in as many as I could but ran out of cages to bring them in with and I had no toats so I gave them blankets and lots of hay but my two older ones died.
Tuesday and Wednesday is supposed to be 101 in Southern Indiana. Hope everything gets better for you.
I'm so sorry for your lose. It wasn't you'r fault. its just part of nature. We're here for u:)
I am so sorry 😞 I almost lost a momma and her whole litter we live in central Indiana and have had a heat warning as well it's so scary, I am so thankful to have you as a resource! I am praying for you your family. Sending love from central Indiana 💖
Thank you so much. I hope your rabbits are okay this coming week as well! ❤️
Thank you. I hope so too.
Hopefully before this ever happens again you guys'll be able to get (some) Generators Soon and/or figure out new ways to help prepare for emergencies like this! It sucks that these things happen, but hopefully it at least teaches us to think of new way to combat future disasters!
So sad for you your a great bun mom ❤
Sorry for your loss. I just bought two rabbits and the heat constantly has me concerned (In Virginia).
Oh, no. I am so sorry.
We are i101 in Salt Lake today. It is dry heat.. like an oven.. so I can spray water on the ground near the hutches and tractor for evaporative cooling BUT it still makes me nervous.
Thank you. So many people are dealing with this unbearable heat. I hope you get through okay 💛
We love your videos so much! 🐰
@@Elucidus4 we all need to vent sometimes. This week was definitely that for me. Good luck! 💜
That sounds really rough. I’m glad you guys came out of that okay!
Even in uncomfortable situations you manage to keep your buns looking cozy. I am sad for you about Tundra and the lost bunnies. This weather sweeping the country has been brutal.
Im sure they weren’t thrilled with the situation. But at least they’re safe.
Mourning with you in south Georgia. Lost my favorite hen last week due to the heat. Even with a fan of was too hot for her.
I’m so sorry 😞
I hate days like that! I had my favorite chicken and two pet fish die the same day. I was very attached to that hen. She would come up and give me good morning hugs. That is sad. I hope you find another good rabbit soon. I have had my pet lionhead die too.
Frozen 2 L water bottles for cooling bunny they will lay next to them in a cage.
This is what I typically do, but without power we could not freeze bottles since we were planning on using the portable AC unit.
I understand, i lost both of my girls and their babies last summer. I haven't replaced them yet because it hurt so much.
So here is wheat I have done:
-Bought 5 Barn Fans from Tractor Supply,
-Bought 2 mister systems from Lowes
-Bought 20, 12”x12” ceramic tiles from Home Depot
-Bought “to go” plastic lidded containers from Sam’s
I freeze the ceramic tiles.
If it hadn’t been for you, I would not own a Rabbitry or known what to do for them.💜💜💜💜💜
Thank you so much Donna ❤️
I lost a couple too, it's hard, especially on the black ones
Today perhaps we should all check to see if we have plenty of batteries to operate fans for ourselves & loved ones. I am also going to make up water bottles/washloths/veggies & freeze them. Frozen chopped spinach stays frozen a long time & can be utilized in a cooler to keep other things cold. +Blessings+
We were in heat advisory in Florida for a whole week had to bring all mine inside it was brutal outside!!!
It's a sad reality of raising animals! Your love makes it hurt more but know it's not your fault
that is sad but life happens I hope u get better
So sad!
Girlllll...I feel your pain. I was freezing buckets and bowls of ice during the night to put in the cages during the day. I'm in the midwest not too far from you. I have two litters currently. Lost one of my babies during the storm Monday night :(
I am so sorry for your loss 😢 we just have to keep doing the best we can.
I’m so sorry to hear about Tundra :( I’ve lost a few Silver Fox to heat during those worst heat waves and I think the feeling of failure is unavoidable, no matter what you do or don’t do. Sounds like you did all you could and things can just happen!
Now that you are on your Homestead, have you thought about having like a generator adjust the supply power for the rabbit barn?
Those tipped ears are adorable
Keep your chin up. Things will get better!🙂
I am determined that things will get better. Heat domes sound awful 😭 but yes, the ears are stinking cute, haha 😊
Hang a bunch of fly tape from the ceiling, kind of gross but it works.
I love this channel I would watch it everyday if I could.
Thank you so much ❤️
sorry for your loss😢😢 but how many days does it take for a rabbit to give delivery
I’m sure that was a rough few days. i just got my first trio and the temps have shot up, so I’m kinda worried about that.
I’ve lost 2 rabbits to heat stroke. It is the worst feeling. It hits me a little differently than any other loss.
I am so sorry 😞 yes it was just awful to discover Tundra and her kit. I feel like I was in shock.
@@TealStoneHomestead I’ve also had to do the inside/outside shuffle. Basically from June-October last year. Just so I wouldn’t lose anyone else.
So sorry about Tundra, I always liked seeing her videos she's just a cutie. Don't blame yourself, I'm in Michigan (I met you at Shipshewana with my silver Foxes) and it's been brutal here too.
Thank you Kristan. I hope you are faring well up there! 💜
😢R.I.P TUNDRA AND BABY
also make sure that your appliance technician who inspects them for your insurance claim knows about the lightning strike. i feel it was the lightning that caused the damage not the power coming back on
Yes, we have it in the works 😊
I’m so sorry for your loss! How hot is too hot for a bunny? My bunnies live outside and I’m trying to keep them all safe and cool this summer.
I commend you 💜
@@PinkinPA I didn’t think you sounded critical!
Anne, I am so sorry 😭 that is absolutely terrible. I hope you hang in there, and I hope you don’t lose any more rabbits!
@@annewade4228 i love that!!
Very Sorry. Dint notice the rabbits until you mentioned them that you had them in the house.
hey idk what happened but over a period of two days some of my rabbit fur is missing from her face are u sure what happened
