taking the pressure off of me is exactly why i put the money into a bunny house; an insulated air conditioned rabbitry. No matter how many coyotes are howling outside I don't have to worry. I still lose chickens but I am in the process of fixing that as well.
I have to say that pvc setup is pretty easy to do and looks so simple! We are super beginners and your videos are soooo helpful! ❤️

I’ve got 2 males and 2 female minirex buns and I’ve had the does since they were 6 weeks, one of the bucks was 10 weeks then later on I got a 2 year old proven buck. Now my does are 11 months old and I’ve been trying to breed them for 3 months with no success but today I finally got 3 fall offs on one of the does and I am so happy!!! I hope the breeding was successful and the babies should be due 2 days before my birthday 🥳. What a great birthday present!! I bred a tricolor mini Rex buck to a harlequin mini Rex doe. I can’t wait for the babies. I love your channel and I’m happy you get to take good care of the buns! Happy 2022!!!!

It is under half an acre - one of the things that we have struggled with (that I forgot to cover in the video) is the mud problems we have been having - so we are trying to combat that problem this year 😊

Hahaha 😆 I haven’t decided if the big cages will go back out this summer - it’s a possibility!
I have found Stainless Steel flyscreen wire is so super fine the rabbits cannot get their teeth into it if it is on the outside of the cage. We screwed it on and then hot glued any gaps. So it can be put between the cages to stop any nasty interaction but they can still see one another and not get lonely.
In Australia we have mosquito born myxamatosis. So i have this wire on all sides of all cages but not underneath. . The hutches are up on 4 cement bricks with trays like yours under. We then cover each hutch with an Army green mossie net. They still get plenty of airflow but it keeps all insects away from them including flys which can transmit the Calici viruses. So far we have had this set up for 6 months and have had no disease. I also feed only greens from a metre off the ground from the various trees and plants on my farm. They eat pellets supplemented with Tagaste leaves and branches. Old Man Saltbush, Carob Leaves and carob pods broken into 4 bits, rosemary, parsley, fennel and some oregeno. Oaten hay is their staple fibre source. We live in a fairly arid zone, so all of the above are super drought tolerant plants. I am trying to grow green wheat fodder, but it is winter here now and too cold. I will also create a few raised bed comfrey patches, come spring for them. I love your new set up. The PVC pipe idea was a new one for me. I always learn a little more, each time I watch your videos. Well done.

Great idea! I am doing the same this year. So much easier not to worry about frozen water, sun bleaching and so on. And little Mirin is super cute! Can't wait to see the rabbitry in the Teal Stone style again soon :-)

I keep my netherlands inside for similar reasons you're talking on, definitely make kits easier to check over and way less fatalities related to weather. I'm probably going to also get plastic to place all the way up and on the floor now as well, I've been using shower curtain liners.
I can imagine the cold weather is a little more harsh on the smaller breeds! Yes I totally recommend PVC. It’s so cheap and easier to cut and put together 😊

Great idea with the PVC frames! What type of trays are you using?
We are just starting and bought the large, heavy duty dog cages on wheels. Homey brand, 43” across. Love them! They are so super study. They are pricey but looked at them as an investment. We also don’t have as many bunnies yet so it’s not too crazy at this point. What I love about the cages is they are tall, and on wheels. I move them and can sweep under where the cages were if they any hay or poops feel out of the tray below. Also, they open from the front and top which is always a plus.
How is the smell in that room with the rabbits? I am very seriously considering breeding rabbits and love watching your videos with your knowledge.
Glad you are feeling better. I badly want a shed for my rabbits soon but we needed a roof first.
In my experience show rabbits especially need to be indoors it helps their coat condition and you don't have to worry about sporadic weather changes that will make them shed randomly. You also don't have to worry about Sun bleaching which is honestly something that I still struggle with even when I try my hardest to keep them out of the Sun. My outdoor Hutch rabbits will always lose against rabbits who are kept inside in a climate controlled environment.
Yes!! Sun bleaching is the worst! In the buck hutch, somehow Sprig’s cage got morning sun no matter what the season was. He was rusty looking for over a year 😆

So, I love this garage set up. And as annoying as it may have been to try all these different hutch arrangements and locations, it is so informative and helpful to see the different options and hear someone speak about the pros and cons from experience. ❤️

Nice video as always, I'm sure it's a time saver in this weather!. In the summer we put a rotating fan in the shed to keep air moving. Plus open windows.
Fans are very helpful. I may have to option of air conditioning this summer but time will tell 😊

The boots are really cute. Im a hard core bogs boot fan though lol. I cant tell you how many times I've had a something sharp go through them and they re-seal themselves and my socks never get wet. I wear them daily, mucking out stalls and wading through swampy water etc here in Florida. They hold up for years too. When they finally get to the point the outer rubber layer cracks, the inner one still holds up for quite a while.

I'm new to the rabbit world. I haven't even purchased rabbits yet, but I just found your channel and I'm loving your content. I've been struggling with what kind of set up to use. My biggest concern is where the pee and poop will go. Since I do want to use the poop in my garden I think I'll use trays and build a pvc frame like yours. However the pee will be with the poop, do you just dry it out first or put it all in a compost bin? I'd love a video on how you manage the poo, maybe you already have one and I haven't come across it yet ;)

This looks wonderful. Unfortunately we don't have a garage at our new house. And the barn needs alot of work in order to be predator proof. However, our house have 2 rooms separate from inside that are similar to a "mudroom" so I've recently got a buck and he is living in there in his cage. It isn't as well insulated but it beats freezing my butt off in the windy outside open field surrounding our 4acres.

Hi Kimi, thank you! The PVC pipes were just measured and cut according to how tall and deep I wanted everything to be. Honestly I just kind of winged it lol. You may be able to find how-to’s on Pinterest 😊
This setup looks so much more stable and safer than the hanging setup you used to have. I also like the indoor hutch option. But it's a lot of work using trays and dumping and cleaning the urine and pasty manure out of them multiple times a day. When shopping for my D'Argents I went to 5 different rabbitries. All of them were in garages or sheds and they all stunk so bad I could barely breathe. The ammonia smell from the urine was pretty unbearable. And all of these had the doors open on both ends of the structures. I can only imagine that yours over time would smell as well. Do you have any plans or strategies for airing out your garage in the winter? How often do you have to empty and clean those trays on a daily basis? When my rabbits were inside my home I had to clean and empty the trays a minimum of twice a day to keep the smell low and at least three times a day to eliminate the smell all together. And, I only have two bunnies. Your setup looks amazing and cost effective but it also looks like a lot of work to maintain. How do you feel about the maintenance? Thanks for sharing
Hi Lloyd, the garage setup was a temporary solution for winter and mainly meant for my show rabbits to stay out of the sun. This garage setup was definitely a lot of work, and while I appreciated not have to bust ice during this last winter, it is a setup I won't be doing again. The ammonia smell was almost a constant, and flies were a big problem. This year we have moved to the country, and my rabbits are in a large open-ended barn. Only the top row uses trays now, and the bottom row waste falls on a dirt floor. I will be making a new video touring this setup soon. Things have been very busy for us during this transition and selling our house, but I will be returning to YT in September! :)

We cover almost half the cages in a heavy wool blanket each.
Cute kitten our cats do really well keeping rodents and snakes down they kill them pretty quickly lol and the boots look good almost look built like the muck boots thats what we got there very comfy

I'm excited to see how you deal with the heat inside in the summer. We've got our rabbits inside our uninsullated garage (not well sealed) during the winter which is great for keeping wind off of them but in the summer it is SO hot in there with no air movement and the sun just baking down. So we move the rabbits outside in the summer but I wish we could keep them inside for safety reasons (stray dog attack last year).
They also got super sunbleached last summer.
I hate to hear about the stray dog attack, that sucks! 😩 my plan for the summer (as long as it’s not suuuuper expensive to run) is to use a stand-up air conditioner. It will be interesting to see if it works 😊

Great video, I live in an urban setting and have neighbours around. Wondering if you have any tips on how to handle and dispose their smelly pee, my intention is to be as discreet as possible. That's the only thing holding me back to start breeding rabbits in my backyard. Thank you!
PVC frame seems a cost effective solution. At the moment the hanging cage seems cool to me. I personally don't like to use zip ties. Preferably using such metal connectors/clips.
Metal would definitely be stronger. Zip ties work in a pinch 😊
Was wondering how the smell is and if this would work in my basement garage?
We have PVC cage holders for our outdoor rabbit cages and I generally like them especially especially from a cleaning perspective. What size PVC are you using? Also you are using the cages as integral supports for everything. Are all of your cages 14 Ga? We have gone to using trays with our cages as well since the automatic slanted waste removal system we put in just took too much time to deal with. I agree that the secret is to have enough room between the cage and the tray to make inspection and removal easier. One challenge we have with the PVC is that the supports are not super rigid and so when the 7 to 10 pound rabbits start jumping around the whole thing shakes and we loose water. This is especially true when our buck does his zoomie buck thing. We are thinking about using angle iron for our next set of cage holders for rigidity and to minimize space. We keep talking about bringing our rabbits into the unheated garage but a farmer friend of ours advised against it both from a urine smell and an indoor air quality standpoint from so many bunnies shedding. So, we are still divided.
Yes our cages are 14 ga. Minus the black ones (those are our older cages, we don’t love them lol). The pvc we are using is 3/4”. I had a shaking problem to begin with, but easily fixed it by screwing the PVC into the walls in a couple places for stability 😊
@@TealStoneHomestead Thanks. I can see where fastening the uprights to the wall would really help. Your video has made me rethink how we might use the angle iron. I'm encourages by the tie wraps holding up the cages. If I use 8" angle iron across, then I can fit 2 3' and 1 2' wide cage per layer. This would give us some more flexibility in holding does that we want to keep for replacements.
Love your new set up. I might have to do that in the future. My babes have some hand built super bulky, but roomy, hutches. I could get a lot more rabbits in my barn with that set up you have. Did you make a video on how to do that?
It’s really easy! Just build side supports out of PVC and zip tie 😊

Hi I want to get into rabbitry and Ive been leaning towards the silver fox, and after seeing your videos I’m also interested in the creme d’argant and I looked at the arba website for breeders and it only showed two breeders nationwide, one in Indiana and the other I think in Minnesota. I’m in California though so I wouldn’t know how to get my hands on them. What would you recommend for me to do. I also love the idea of preserving that breed and improving it so that really makes me want it even more. Maybe you can address it in a video, I’d like to see more of thoughs creme d’argants.

Do you feel like you have to use cardboard on your nest box bottoms now? Or is it warm and non-drafty enough in the garage to keep the kits on only the wire bottoms (+nest materials ofc) to help with drainage?
It still gets cold enough for water to get partially frozen, so I will probably still do cardboard in the winter 😊

What size PVC pipe did you use? This video was really good timing because I was just about to start building an outdoor hutch like yours and move my rabbits OUT of their bunny barn. I have them all hung in a single row in the bunny barn and need more room so was going to stack them in an outdoor hutch. But maybe I'll just use PVC braces and stack them inside! Like I said, good timing! My son was literally going to pick up the lumber tomorrow!
I used 3/4” PVC, but 1” would be even stronger. I screwed the pipes into the walls in just a couple places so they didn’t jiggle 😊

I really appreciate the effort of moving them inside but you should probably change out the flooring of the cages. Wire bottom floors are horrible for their feet.
That is a common misconception that pet owners have. Wire bottom floors are perfectly fine and comfortable for rabbits provided that you use a thick gauge like 14-16GA. Wire bottom floors keep my rabbits sanitary and free of disease. It also provides much necessary ventilation that rabbits need 😊
If you're wanting vermin control, I highly recommend getting a small dog to train for that kind of thing instead of using your cat. Cats are a host for toxoplasmosis, an illness they can get from killing or eating an infected rodent, which could in turn infect you or your rabbits and cause serious brain damage or miscarriages, or they may even eat poisoned prey which could kill them. It's also harder to keep cats contained, so you'd need to keep a heavy eye on your cat if you're letting them in your yard, lest they escape and potentially get injured. They may also kill native animals that aren't vermin.
A terrier [or similar small dog breed] is bred for vermin control so it'll be much easier to train them to do the work and to not eat what they catch, and you'll guarantee that they'll have that prey drive, unlike a cat which you can't guarantee will hunt what you want or at all. You could also teach your current dogs to hunt vermin; they may or may not have the necessary prey drive, but you could certainly try and see if they can.

I do not unfortunately. So far, KW Cages will not respond to my emails and has poor communication. Of course you guys would be the first to know if that ever happened 😊

When I start to smell too much ammonia is it’s time to change the trays. Overall not bad, especially since we use super absorbent pine pellets 😊
