I hope you one day do the history of Basketville in Putney Vt. It was quite a destination. And nearby was a Chicken Barbeque which is a most interesting history itself. Also there was Santa's Land in the vicinity. All these were great places in the 70' 80's and we'd drive up from Ct. to enjoy them and shop at the famous Basketville. Another great iconic store was the 25000 Woolen gifts store in White River Junction. What a great place to by sweaters etc. gone now but not forgotten.
Nice to learn the history of the slate and slate pencil for this is what I learnt to write on many decades ago. Are these still being sold for it's a nice souviner for one like me who started schooling using it.

I always thought you used chalk on a slate. Never heard of a slate pencil.. actually, till i saw Little house on the prairie.
