Here in 2020, 40 years after this woman died I'm listening her song. (I'm an Indian)
In another 40 million years, probably somebody from another world will hear this song, and wonder what this woman was like.

That a bunch of geeks (meant with profound admiration) using 1970s technology were able to incorporate the tone and meaning of the song so poetically into the mission of the spacecraft is almost too much to believe. The mere thought that these very lyrics, “where do you go girl, alone” on these records, on these spacecraft, venturing out into the darkness, perhaps never to be found, but nevertheless, with the infinitesimally small chance of one day being heard by who knows who, who knows when, is mind boggling.

That was the imagination of Carl Sagan.

    • @MichelGmusic
      @MichelGmusic 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Not sure they knew the meaning of the lyrics. It was Robert E. Brown, ethnomusicologist from Wesleyan University, who was asked by Nasa to recommend some world music for Voyager, he recommended a number of songs from different culrtures, hard to imagine he would have known all those languages. I believe the sheer beauty of the music is the reason of his choice.

The closing lines are "jaat kahaan ho, akele" which mean: "where do you go, alone".
Fitting reflection for a little craft hurtling through and expanding our realm of "explored" space,
or beseeching another civilization as it passes by, eons after our own collapse.

But i think what's been missed and what i personally consider even more beautiful is the second line - "Kesar rang ke maath bhaye hoy, Hori khelat Kanha re
The fields are colored saffron, Krishna is playing Holi (there I go.) "
Krishna being symbolic of the playful nature of the Cosmic Existence 😊And voyager being our eternal desire of uncovering the depths of Universal Existence.

Apparently, the choice of the song was made when the person tasked with looking for songs to insert on the record walked into a records store in downtown New York, searching for exotic music. Upon hearing the sitar intro, the person was struck with imagery of a spiral galaxy slowly turning amidst star clusters of the rest of the cosmos. It was the clincher that got this raga on the golden record.

the meaning of "jaat kahan ho, akele" is where do you go alone and she was one of the most influential singers in India. so this song was proposed by India in the UN.

For voyager1 this content of the record were selected for NASA by a committee chaired by Carl Sagan of Cornell University, et. al. Dr. Sagan and his associates assembled 115 images and a variety of natural sounds, such as those made by surf, wind and thunder, birds, whales, and other animals. To this they added musical selections from different cultures and eras, and spoken greetings from Earth-people in fifty-five languages, and printed messages .
90-minute selection of music, including both Eastern and Western classics and a variety of ethnic musi
"The spacecraft will be encountered and the record played only if there are advanced spacefaring civilizations in interstellar space. But the launching of this bottle into the cosmic ocean says something very hopeful about life on this planet."

I hope, some million years down the line, a bunch of alien species will land on earth and one of them would sing this song to our civilization if future civilizations are able to survive that long. However, i think most certainly they may speak the language of mathematics as it is the only universal intelligent language within our own milky-way and among afar galaxies.

I legit thought the lyrics were "jaat kaha ho akele vaari" meaning where do you go lonely traveller. but just realised that its actually "jaat kaha ho akeli gori" which makes it less cooler in my mind.
because the song being about voyager (2? 1?) lost in space and not some fair maiden leaving her house

The voyager reflects the amazing feats of technology we have been able to achieve collectively as a species. It is the fair maiden daughter of our species. I think that's super cool.😁
