18~ handicap golfer. Shot an 82 yesterday. Best round I’ve ever had. Damm it felt good. Stopped thinking so mechanically, just felt the turf, copied my practice strokes, gauged the putting pace perfectly, great bump and running, and hit ALL fairways when driving by simply pausing a split second at top of back swing. All in all, probably a little bit of luck, great advice from the Baus, and a great attitude throughout the round.

I’m usually a 90-95 shooter. After applying this man’s course management, eliminating my ego from my game, purposely choosing my clubs to avoid hazard and set myself up for a wedge or nine from fairway shots my last rounds were 89,87,85 AND 83! Best advice on TH-cam

55 years young and a fairly new golfer. I choose to listen to Golf Sidekick’s videos. They have helped me relax and play smarter. I’ve gone from never breaking 100 to my last three rounds - 97, 95, 90. I’m believing I’ll score in the 80’s soon.

After watching your breaking 100 strategy series I finally did it yesterday and broke 100 by 6 strokes.
Shot a 94 at a 7200 yard course with 6 pars!! Hit a little cheeky toe down 7 iron chip and holed out for a par ;)
Next step is 20 to 10 handicap :) thank you for everything you do brother !!

I almost never comment, but I have to thank you somehow. 31 handicapper. Broke 100 a few weeks ago and shot a 91 last week(playing from what they call the ladies tee), following your videos on how to break 100. I found my rough distances with each club in order for me to plan each hole. I did ZERO practice, except for one of the drills you recommended, putting from within 1 meter, aprox. 3 feet. Apart from that, within 100 yards I just told myself «get it on the green». Thank you.

Matt, I am 65 and resumed golf 2 years ago after a 16-year hiatus. I started watching your videos a couple of months ago. My handicap was 20.5 when I started using your technique. I had only broken 90 once (an 87 in the summer of 2022). I have now played 15 rounds since employing your teachings. My last 2 rounds were an 89 (44/45), and yesterday's 86 (46/40). I had 8 pars yesterday and 7 - 1putts. My handicap has dropped from 20.5 to 18.5 since I have been following your advice. Thank you!!! You're a great coach and mentor to me and many others out there! Cheers from Granbury, TX!!!

At the 23:10 mark of this video: Laying 1 and 250 yards from the hole. Per your advice Mat, I will pull out my 7-iron, which is the club that I hit best, and I will hit it 150 yards, now I am laying 2 with 100 yards to the center of the green. The next swing will be with a pitching wedge, and if all goes as planned, I am on in 3. A 2 putt, and I have a bogey. As Clint Eastwood's character, Dirty Harry said, " a man has got to know his limitations!"

Over the winter, I spent a lot of time working with a coach on my ball striking. I went from hitting a 155 yard 7 iron that would fade/slice to a 175 yard 7 iron with a baby draw. The result of this was lowering my handicap by 2.5 strokes and it took me 6 months of work.
Changing my mindset from hitting a 7/10 shot to a 9/10 shot has lowered my handicap by 4 strokes over the last 6 weeks and still improving as my confidence and commitment keep building.
It is easy to convince yourself that distance is what makes you a better golfer. I hit the ball as far as an average scratch golfer but that does not make up for 3 triple bogeys a round. I leave my long clubs in the bag most of the time. I hit mid irons constantly because I can fully commit to the shot. I am on my way to a 10 handicap not because of my distance but fully embracing the system.

Ode to Playa: Thank you, Matt, for this and so many fantastic videos. I’ve been being schooled in ‘The Way of The Playa’ for 3 weeks now, as the passion has come back to play after about 16 years away from the game. Years ago, I played to a 4.9 and my goal this summer was to break 80. That’s where you come in.
91, 88, 87 have been recent rounds as I started to practice: GIOTG, 1,2 & 3 foot putts at home and at my course. Toe down pitching wedge practice, and taking more club - these have been the biggest focuses I’ve been working on, and yesterday I shot 84 with 2 ‘stroke and distance’ OB shots, so I’m knocking on the door of my goal already - because of your shot suggestions and course management ideas. Golf has taken on a joy that I’ve never experienced and it’s because of the ‘Wisdom of the Playa’ Thank You!!
I wonder if you have thoughts for subscribers on playing balls that are more forgiving on mishits? Some tour balls really penalize distance, side spin, etc., when not hit pure, and other balls are much more forgiving.
Keep inspiring us to shoot better with the games we already have, and ways to practice smarter.

I’m currently a 22.5hdcp, and you couldn’t be more right about where I lose strokes. Off the tee, chips and putts. My last round I had 7, yes 7 three putts. Your toe down chipping technique has really helped me, and also trying to avoid hazards by picking a club that won’t reach them. I do however, have troubles sticking to my plan. Especially if I hit a bad shot, or I get rushed. Really lose the confidentiality when that happens.

    • @GolfSidekick

Improving putting speed control step 1 - practice to a tee in the ground longer than 15 feet away.
Sticking to plan with discipline and emotional control is step 2.
Step 3 is pitching and chipping from rough and fairway lies from 10-30 yards, random spots around the practice green.
Step 4 will be better contact with your clubs.

@@GolfSidekicknormally my putting is not that terrible. I just played yesterday again. Not one three putt. 16-2putts and 2-1 putts. And I had a few lag putts that were 40-50 feet away. I struggle more so, inside 5 feet. Definitely going to practice putting and chipping more. I feel like I can drop my scores into the high 80’s by cleaning up a few strokes. Shot a 91 yesterday. Last week I broke 90 for the first time. Shot an 89. Hoping to see at least one round under 85 this year. I started golfing a year and a half ago. I’m in my early 40’s, I’m getting a late start. But I am totally obsessed now. Thanks for the great tips. Love your videos.

Your videos are great! Your approach keeps the inevitable bad shot to just one bad shot, and not the beginning of a series of bad shots. For the next shot, you just focus on using a club with a reliable distance to a save target. Relentless course management.

I stumbled across your channel a few days ago and very glad I did! I was an avid golfer 20 years ago, getting to a 4.9 index at the course I was a member at for a couple of years. After being away from golf 2 decades I have the fever back and joined a local club. I’m back to breaking 90 as of last week, but this video and your putting p video is giving me the ‘confidential’ that I will be able to achieve my goal of breaking 80 again, thanks to your instructional videos. Thanks for these, from all of us!

Watching this channel has given me video proof that safe approach shots and chipping proficiency is far more important than distance and even hitting the ball straight. I went back thru my Arccos app and discovered that my scores went from 104-98 to 94-88 when I started watching and rewatching these videos. While my distance dropped from 194 to 177 avg (not pulling out driver or fairway woods as often), I dropped to -0.9 shots gained for distance but accuracy is now +O.8, penalties went from -3 to -1, but approach went from -3.3 to +2.5 when I began playing away from trouble and short game went from -2.4 to +1.2 when I stopped trying shots too hard for me and instead focused on GIOTG. Being told and being shown are too different things and that’s what makes this channel GOLD.

An initial putting lesson to make sure the ball goes where you think it'll go was so key for me. Told me that my "all lined up" was significantly left, and that my body was compensating by trying to push it, so things were all askew.
Once I got a reliably way to line it up, I could correct my putting stroke.
Only once I could trust that, could I start to build up my experience with distance control. And for me the shortcut is imagining myself rolling the ball underarm, and then feeling that same pace in my putt. Has really transformed my putting

An excellent video that I was just made aware of. I really like your field goal posts visual. It eliminates the perfect shot and opens up good shot ranges. In the future could you super impose a draw/pull shot trajectory for a right hand golfer when you show a fade/slice trajectory. It would make the field goal post visual better for me. It would help me think of beginning targets.

I am a 16 handicap and last round I hit 9 greens in regulation. I only played an 89 though. I played 9 Pars and 4 bogeys. I was 10 over through 14 holes and my iron shots felt amazing. I lost one ball and needed to take two unplayables. I also had four 3-putts without a single 1-putt, which was a bit frustrating. There were two holes that really messed up the score. I played an 8 on the 7th hole (Par 4) and a 9 on the 17th hole (Par 5).
I actually had terrible back pain the days before, so I swung super relaxed, which worked out exceptionally well. I only hit the ball half a club shorter than usual. I play to rarely though.
This was the fifth time playing golf this year, so I cannot complain. Had a lot of fun during that round. I wish I had more time to practice. Not easy when you live in a big city and don't own a car though.

Having a go to shot shape is great adivce for all handocaps, just look the the PGA and LPGA pros, they're usually hitiing the same shot shape 95% of the time. Many excellent ball strikers have a fade, they just know yow and when to hit a draw. Cheers

To be honest players, all the planning in the world and course management can’t overcome poor ball striking. The difference for me when I was a 20 and now a 7-9 is I don’t duff or fat shots often and barely 3 putt. My dispersion is still not that great, but I’ve really minimized dumb mistakes. Especially around the green.

Yeah bang on I got down to a 9.2 handicap simply from following the way of the playa but also playing so much my ball striking became crisp. Now I'm playing less and rely on my short game to bail me out. Handicap has gone up to a 13.8. I've gone from almost breaking 80 to mostly struggling to break 90.

I have a natural draw but haven't aimed closer to a "field goal post" along the fairway edge/rough line like you've shown w/your "fader" on the first tee you demonstrated (aiming on the starting line - ahhhh!!!!). I'll definitely give this a chance next round and not fear aiming like that. (I over-hook to the opposite side rough way too many times aiming too much into the fairway at address), but the rest of my game is mostly decent. If I can get more tee shots in play I'll definitely break 90. Thanks playa

I'm on this journey and have set myslef 5 rules to follow:
    1. Get tee shots in play (dont chase distance, just get it on the fairway)
2.Play the percentage shot, i.e. the one I can do 70% of the time.
    3. Inside 100 yards just GIOTG. A long putt is preferabe to a short chip or bunker shot
    4. Avoid bunkers at all costs
    5. Concentrate on all putts and try to read the green (I cant do this very well)
Dropped from 21 to 16 and trending to improve further......

Matt, as much as I know how bad you hate it but you’ve got to do some mechanics videos. Particularly driver and long irons or hybrids. The little incites you’ve given me like toe down chipping or hitting the down hill put off the toe of the putter to kill the speed have help me so so much. I could go for some tips on what to do when a driver that’s been working all day takes a shize mid round. What’s the “titties to the target” or “dogie lies, toe down chip” solution to long irons or driver quitting on you mid round?

      Get someone older than 30
Trust your instincts. You have to trust them immediately. If you don’t trust them for any reason, you’re out. You won’t listen to them so move onto the next one.
I don’t trust very young pros with no experience. A guy over 30 might have 5-10 years of seeing thousands of swings
