This is one of the best skits, I mean guest spots I have ever seen on Letterman. I missed seeing this 40 years ago, I was probably sick with a sore throat or something, but it's good seeing it now after all these years.

Steve's ability to keep a straight face is such a thing of beauty.
I've heard some performers mention how talk shows are so programmed and fake, that what's said is covered before the guest goes on, so to avoid that, the top entertainers have other ideas. Bruce Willis, Martin Short, and Steve Martin were the best at going off script for some good fun. I miss good late night TV. It died when Letterman and Ferguson left.
