That makes sense. The film Holy Mountain came out in 1973, and the art direction in this video takes a lot of cues from psychedelic cinema from that era.

Ok i listened to this Song for a year now. At first I was obsessed with the fact, that the Video is uncanny mystical witch-art, its on the edge of sadness, wisdom, horror and comedy. It offers comedic relief for things there shuldnt be had none. It also offered me a non hardfactual insight into the feelings of (a) woman and I still open myself to let that sink in. The groove is unreal, I cant even think of anything that has this soft subtle but brilliant funk to it. So yeah, im unworthy, thank you!
Quite a catchy song, infectious even. The video is also an attention-grabber due to it's bizarro nature. But after delving more into her music, I realized what unparalleled talent this lady is. There's really no one out there like her right now. Even with her quirky delivery, I'm very impressed.
I think you mean, ESPECIALLY with her quirky delivery :) but yes, it is infectious, this is probably my 10th time here in the last 3 days.... Aldous is a poetic genius. What I would give to have tea with her just once.
I saw your comment and went to find out about Jodorowsky. Havent seen the film. But have begun an inquiry... so far only learning about it from a distance. I hope i have the strength to see the film but feel a little hesitant. Fear it will send my brain into a dark place, not the reverse. TH-cam comments in a time of pandemic. Opening worlds through a 6/8 in screen. Bizarre.
@@MarloweDash John Lennon and Yoko Ono were so taken by his previous film, El Topo, they helped finance the making of The Holy Mountain. John and Yoko were early purveyors of the midnight movie scene, of which El Topo was one such film that gained a cult status by the early morning screenings. In my opinion, El Topo might be a more difficult watch than The Holy Mountain.
Jodorowsky.... overwhelm a little with all the BIG conflicts and awareness of my first world complicity and comfort. I find relief by watching Detectorists. Have you seen it? Brilliant 3 series show by MacKenzie Crook. Brings me back down to ground, joyous, profound too. Just found it during covid. Johnny Flynn score is also wonderful. :)

I can't stress enough how wonderful the construction of this song is. the lyrics is so intricate and exposing but so secluded at the same time. and the composition and production of the music is so gently done. You can feel a needle fall in-between the space and neatly placed hits of the arrangement.
Beautiful song, flawless and mesmerising. The video is just sublime, I can't stop watching her dance, I love it when she looks straight into camera just nodding her head to the beat, she has great natural rhythm. I've just realised that I've repeated this video over and over again for 40 minutes while I read everyone else's comments. I can't stop smiling, this is so good, I love it ❤️
It feels like magic. 1:59 and 2:31 give me chills. If you explore her countenance. Perhaps she's genuinely realizing/feeling the magic. Must be overwhelming. I've no idea. Would be nice to ask her......
I want to get a pet ferret when I'm older. When I do, I will surely show it to the eggs I buy from the grocery store. The more eggs to show the ferret to, the better, right?
@@daninoa9650 Well, it will certainly keep the eggs from getting any crazy ideas, right? Because ferrets are notorious egg-stealers. And not to just collect them. Their actual motives are said to be rather more sinister than that.
I've listened to this song a thousand times now (ok, 47 times) and it still gets me, intrigues me. The lyrics, the video, the voice(s), the music: all breathes good art for me. So gentle indeed ;)
This is pure Dada . The words can have emotional effect whether or not objective meaningis there or not . I love this song and I like her work as I discover more and more !
I just joked with my GF saying that this girl must be from New Zealand - I was right! Kiwi's are in their own lane with art and comedy! I'm endlessly finding New Zealand music and entertainment that is second to none!
Heard this on the radio yesterday and thought, "gee, the lyrics are interesting. Maybe watching the music video will help clarify some things." Aaaaand the answer is "no."
I think the video does add context though. She doesn't like to give too much away but it's framed with an obvious reference to female anatomy. And in the break in the music she stops dancing, we see her up close, head bowed. Something wrong has happened. When she reappears she is as new, childlike. Is it about a miscarriage? Who knows. Her art is to give us suggestions, not to spell everything out for us.
What a refreshingly original sound . It's quirky, catchy, tuneful and utterly unique. This is the sort of music I have been missing all these years. Bravo to Aldous Harding. Hope to hear lots more from you .

@@johnconway8070 I see what happened! We were referencing COMPLETELY different things. I watched a video of Miley Cyrus performing a cover of Heaven Or Las Vegas which has nothing whatsoever to do with “The Barrel” and I’m really not sure how your comment on this video was visible to me there. It is the only video I watched that day. Fun fact though: Aldous Harding was born the year that “Heaven or alas Vegas” was released. :) Random find while trying to figure out why you mentioned Aldous at all!
The Barrel -Aldous Harding I feel your love I feel time is up When I was a child, I never knew enough What that do to me? The wave of love is a transient hunt Water's the shell and we are the nut But I saw a hand arch out of the barrel Look at all the peaches How do you celebrate? Can't appear inside of nowhere It's already dead I know you have the dove I'm not getting wet Looks like a date is set Show the ferret to the egg I'm not gettin' led along I rushed in to hold down your page And now I sleep 'side words you do not read with me I hear a song from inside the maze, the very one you made You shook at the ivory mantle As a poet, I knew to be gentle When you have a child, so begins the braiding And in that braid you stay Look at all the peaches I want to celebrate I can appear inside of nowhere Look at all the peaches It's already dead I know you have the dove I'm not getting wet Looks like a date is set Show the ferret to the egg I'm not getting led along The wave of love is a transient hunt Water's the shell and we are the nut But I saw a match struck outside the barrel It's already dead I know you have the dove I'm not getting wet (The barrel) (The barrel) Looks like a date is set Show the ferret to the egg I'm not getting led along (The barrel) (The barrel) It's already dead I know you have the dove I'm not getting wet (The barrel) (The barrel) Looks like a date is set Show the ferret to the egg I'm not getting led along (The barrel) (The barrel) (The barrel) (The barrel) (The barrel) (The barrel)
I think this song is about infertility and trying to conceive.... It's all very suggestive including imagery. Silk drapes look like a womb, the hat looks phallic almost like a condom. "Looks like a date is set. Check the ferret to the egg" ovulation is at a certain date. A ferret runs around tubes, it's the penis and the egg is the ovulated egg.... Or, it could just be nonsense....
@@mamesmck5236 I agree with these themes but I think she might be in love with some guy and feeling a strong pull toward a conventional Romance, and resulting pregnancy, But wants wants to resist it so as not to be "led along" or become "part of the braid" I also kind of wonder if perhaps she had a very sensible abortion, and the song is a rumination on that experience.
I first heard about this song from someone I've loved like no one else. Years after and with a lot of pain involved, I still can't run away from this song. It doesn't matter when or where I stumble across it, it brings me to the very same place of not knowing what the future might bring. Now I know that it brought a lot of pain. And even though quite a while has passed, I still feel every single bit of this song. Except now I truly know what a transient hunt love is. I don't think I'll ever be able to feel how I felt before. Or maybe I will never be able to stop feeling it, even if only inside my own little egg. "And now I sleep 'side words you do not read with me". We can't run away from how we feel.
"And now I sleep 'side words you do not read with me". Take a wild guess what Aldous was singing right as I read those words in your post. Coincidence? _Nothing this woman does is coincidence!!_ She transcends time.

She is the proof that we are not alone in the universe
Quite a catchy song, infectious even. The video is also an attention-grabber due to it's bizarro nature. But after delving more into her music, I realized what unparalleled talent this lady is. There's really no one out there like her right now. Even with her quirky delivery, I'm very impressed.
I think you mean, ESPECIALLY with her quirky delivery :) but yes, it is infectious, this is probably my 10th time here in the last 3 days.... Aldous is a poetic genius. What I would give to have tea with her just once.
Bizzaro is exactly how I described it haha
Amazing artist.
"The Barrel" was the highest debut on the New Alternative 40 Chart this week at #2.
New Zealand is the happening
If you say so.Lol
WHAT ON EARTH WAS NUMBER ONE!??
One of my favourite pieces of performance art. I don’t know why I love it. It just feels like it was made just for me 🤷♂️
I'm pleased it was made for someone!!
You’re a weirdo and I like you!
Same
You must be so happy! 😉
Alejandro Jodorowsky's 'The Holy Mountain' comes to mind while watching this video.
Exactly what I was thinking 🙂

I keep coming back to this video again and again, and every time I am delighted and oddly soothed.

I can't stress enough how wonderful the construction of this song is. the lyrics is so intricate and exposing but so secluded at the same time. and the composition and production of the music is so gently done. You can feel a needle fall in-between the space and neatly placed hits of the arrangement.
Huh?
That hat is clearly for smuggling fire extinguishers!
Congratulations to whoever worked on this song. Really well produced
Very addicting visually and audibly.
Everything about it is so disarming and warm.
It's disarmingly dry at the beginning. Really subtly unique sound.
totally love this woman. totally. she is so cool. her moves. her face. the way she wears it.
She's stark raving mad and I love her!
Best oversized hat since Jamiroquai. I love the song. Backing vocals on the second half : genius
I have to watch/listen to this at least once every day....WHY??
because it's brilliant and uses imagination! to guide the song- what a notion
The power of hat compels you!!!!
Serving high-fashion pilgrim REALNESS.
You misspelled "realness' for WEIRDNESS.
I've made up my mind! Aldous is definitely my favorite artist!
who else is gonna admit to trying some of those moves after viewing a few times ?
Hahahaha yes 😂
Haha
Requires rhythm and timing that I have yet to master ☹
I've been told it's how I dance. So. I'm very proud!
Why wouldn't you, no one can help it!
Unbelievable. One of the best things I have seen in a long time. Beautiful, poignant, funny excruciatingly brilliant.
I'm like a ferret to an egg.
I can't stop smiling, this is so good, I love it ❤️
I could have written the very same comment.
Me and u both kiddo. 1:21-1:24 is just absolute, pinpoint perfection
Ditto
It feels like magic. 1:59 and 2:31 give me chills. If you explore her countenance. Perhaps she's genuinely realizing/feeling the magic. Must be overwhelming. I've no idea. Would be nice to ask her......
Same here
God. I can’t stop watching this. I’m horrified and transfixed. It’s grotesque and beautiful. Very special indeed.
Welcome to Aldous Harding
I know EXACTLY how you feel
She's the perfect blend.
"Look at all the peaches"
"Show the ferret to the egg"
That's my weekend plans sorted then
Don't forget to water the nut!
Looks like a date is set.
I want to get a pet ferret when I'm older. When I do, I will surely show it to the eggs I buy from the grocery store. The more eggs to show the ferret to, the better, right?
Nice way to f the pain away
@@daninoa9650 Well, it will certainly keep the eggs from getting any crazy ideas, right? Because ferrets are notorious egg-stealers. And not to just collect them. Their actual motives are said to be rather more sinister than that.
Director: "So, we're just gonna have you dance front of these draped sheets."
Aldous: "I know exactly what to do"
She has stated her video's are done to her exact demands & she does not appreciate input or suggestions.
The costume is a direct homage to Alejandro Jodorowski's classic film "the Holy Mountain." ^_^ This singer really has fun with the kooky getup.
vs self sabotage
It's incredibly sad yet filled with life and humanity. Life, love, loss... and yet it's all still so evidently beautiful and precious
"Yo, Egg, check out this ferret."
Thanks Mark
Mad love and respect dawg!

Y'all got any more of them nuts?
the dancing, the looks, the hat, impecable concept. i love every second of this.
I've listened to this song a thousand times now (ok, 47 times) and it still gets me, intrigues me.
The lyrics, the video, the voice(s), the music: all breathes good art for me. So gentle indeed ;)

Director: "Do you want the video to be sexy or calming or weird?"
Aldous: "Yes!"
Calming!
Hahahaha
Hahahahha!
Got to be the 666th thumbs-up on this comment; it just feels right--I'm caught between ecstasy and unease

I honestly cannot tell if I am unsettled or the most at ease I have ever been.
Art should comfort the disturbed and disturb the comforted.
I'm afraid one day I will open a random door and find myself in this room.
I'm afraid one day we all will.
I've already been there.
You need to stop opening random doors.
But yes agreed, I watch this and other Harding videos and think they might find there way into my sleep
I feel like it would be a pretty good time. Just be sure to turn back when you see the ladder. Anything after the ladder is not a good time.
i actually saw it on a horror movie about a girl in a theater school
Just seen an interview with Debbie Harry and she said this was one of her favourite tunes.👌
I showed this to a friend and she said, "I feel like I have to burn sage now".

Heard this on the radio yesterday and thought, "gee, the lyrics are interesting. Maybe watching the music video will help clarify some things."
Aaaaand the answer is "no."
Same!
You have radio stations that play good music?
Lmao
I think the video does add context though. She doesn't like to give too much away but it's framed with an obvious reference to female anatomy. And in the break in the music she stops dancing, we see her up close, head bowed. Something wrong has happened. When she reappears she is as new, childlike. Is it about a miscarriage? Who knows. Her art is to give us suggestions, not to spell everything out for us.

The Barrel -Aldous Harding
I feel your love
I feel time is up
When I was a child, I never knew enough
What that do to me?
The wave of love is a transient hunt
Water's the shell and we are the nut
But I saw a hand arch out of the barrel
Look at all the peaches
How do you celebrate?
Can't appear inside of nowhere
It's already dead
I know you have the dove
I'm not getting wet
Looks like a date is set
Show the ferret to the egg
I'm not gettin' led along
I rushed in to hold down your page
And now I sleep 'side words you do not read with me
I hear a song from inside the maze, the very one you made
You shook at the ivory mantle
As a poet, I knew to be gentle
When you have a child, so begins the braiding
And in that braid you stay
Look at all the peaches
I want to celebrate
I can appear inside of nowhere
Look at all the peaches
It's already dead
I know you have the dove
I'm not getting wet
Looks like a date is set
Show the ferret to the egg
I'm not getting led along
The wave of love is a transient hunt
Water's the shell and we are the nut
But I saw a match struck outside the barrel
It's already dead
I know you have the dove
I'm not getting wet

I think this song is about infertility and trying to conceive.... It's all very suggestive including imagery. Silk drapes look like a womb, the hat looks phallic almost like a condom.
"Looks like a date is set. Check the ferret to the egg" ovulation is at a certain date. A ferret runs around tubes, it's the penis and the egg is the ovulated egg....
Or, it could just be nonsense....
Thx a bunch.
Thank you.x

I agree with these themes but I think she might be in love with some guy and feeling a strong pull toward a conventional Romance, and resulting pregnancy, But wants wants to resist it so as not to be "led along" or become "part of the braid"
I also kind of wonder if perhaps she had a very sensible abortion, and the song is a rumination on that experience.
Delightful, dark, and infectious. I keep returning to this, over and over.
absolutely ethereal and nourishing in sound with giggly and fun visuals ⚡️⚡️⚡️
I'm too old to appreciate most new music but this is too good to ignore.
Old is a state of mind.
Love it. My English is insufficient to show my overwhelming appreciation.
I've come back to this at least fifty times over the past week. It's mesmerizing, ever so slightly unsettling, and yet powerfully anodyne.
Aldous Harding, dancing like a totally normal human! She's a human, guys, really.
Well how come I saw her turning wine into water once?

Award for the best comments everyone of these. I’m literally dying here. Loved the song too.. video doesn’t disappoint.
