    • @letym2271
      @letym2271 2 ปีที่แล้ว +68

      It does sound silly because those teachers think in absolutes and traditionalism. However the pencil does give you the possibility to tilt it in order to shade in such a way that you can fill in the paper's pores. A mechanical pencil helps a lot for technical drawings and yes, while you can shade with it, the texture comes out different unlike a pencil, where the latter blends in with the paper. They have different purposes.

    The "no black shadows" refers to oil paint where you mix your own dark shades for the shadows, which gives you richer shadows than if you just used a pre-mixed tube of black.
    There's GOOD art tips that are BAD when removed from context.

    • @bluefox5331
      @bluefox5331 2 ปีที่แล้ว +59

      It could also mean what I see often with beginning artists, which is just taking straight black, diluting it/ setting the layer to a lower opacity or multiply, and shading with that. In most cases it looks like the character got dirty and it'd be better to shade with a desaturated color that's not straight black

    Unfortunately the "perspective is only for buildings, so I'll draw only humans so that I won't need to learn perspective" is pretty common among beginner artists :/ I don't know how many times I saw people say that and how aggressively they attacked anyone who dared to say that you need perspective in drawing humans too

    • @salty_3k506
      @salty_3k506 2 ปีที่แล้ว +65

      Buildings can be simplified into boxes, just like humans. And you need to be able to draw boxes in perspective.

    • @2fortsmostwanted
      @2fortsmostwanted 2 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      i guess some genuinely believe perspective doesn't matter with drawing characters, but some people choose to ignore the fact that every form needs to sit in space to be considered a form because drawing a body in perspective is a lot harder than a building. I mean a lot of the time you just draw a box and call it done, but with a person, you have to deal with tapers in perspective, foreshortening that overlaps itself, a smile that gets turned upside down when the head is looking up. It's all really intimidating for beginner artists, which is why 3d mannequins are getting popular.

    I've done some professing in my life in concept art and previsualization and I got one student who uses the "but this person is a specialist in this" excuse a bit.
    There is nothing wrong with specialization. However there is something wrong with specialization to the detriment of your foundation.
    One kid in question drew absolutely beautiful faces and hands but couldn't draw a box to save his soul and didn't even want to learn anything else. I had given him an assignment to draw an abandoned temple in the desert. He could easily make it out of heads and hands. He didn't do the assignment as it wasn't character design. Later when we got to character design he got mad he had to draw the entire character and make model sheets and then place The character in poses in 3d space (we've even let him use clip studio paint! So he could literally have the software do the pose!)
    Being diverse is great, having a specialization is also good, but hyper specialization is for incects.
    You can learn many lessons stepping outside your comfort zone in art and can improve your craft even more by refreshing your knowledge in fundamentals.

      I am not a hundred percent sure about the whole process, but I think you take your reference and trace over it on a new layer. Not line for line, but the important shapes, so you got the proportions and relations down. Then you hide the reference picture (or scoot it to the side) and use your trace as a new reference. This time you eyeball it, but since you only have basic shapes without colors, shading, details, etc., you can just focus on the proportions and the form itself

    That darn stupid intro made me tear up. Lol, had been feeling like shit about my art for a month or two now. Thanks, Ethan. Also, I think for beginner artists, it's best to just listen to what you see repeated by professional artists. Sometimes, listening to advice made by other fellow amateur artists could hamper your improvement. Or atleast double-check if that advice has some grounds to stand on.

    • @Sund3v3
      @Sund3v3 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'd love to hear more about that, too, actually. I've branched out to full body characters since then but portraits are still my comfort zone. If you are open to expanding to half body and more elaborate setups, you could easily use that skill for card art or book covers.

    • @fuzzyapple

    11:15 that remaind me of my art professor ( He was awesome) each of as approach art differently ,my friends was always measuring everything ,her Art was flawless but I never done that ,i was drawing with the flow ,and I started to imitate her and my professor told me to stop , and do how I was doing this ,i think he was able to see and understand that we all are different and he was trying to encourage me to do it my way because it was working for me better ❤️ remember guys we all have different brains and some are more intuitive artist and some need more structure and both is fine. Of course intuitive need a little bit of structure too and thinkers need some more flow but that can be studied separately

    Every time you talk about having an overarching art goal, you start with the assumption that we all wanna get a job at some studio, but what does somebody like me who is uninterested in working as an artist make my target?
    I guess maybe I just need to look inside myself and figure out why I'm trying to get better at art, but I'd love some examples to help me along that process

    • @aconfusedalien1491
      @aconfusedalien1491 2 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      same! I love art and want to improve but I'd like to keep it as a hobby. I still think that gathering your favorite artists, studios and comics is very helpful even if my goal is as vague as "I wanna get gud." Sometimes thinking about what I want to use my art for (like I want to make comics and short animations) help.

    • @2fortsmostwanted
      @2fortsmostwanted 2 ปีที่แล้ว +24

      I am just like you and my goal is to make a comic. Merely because I want to really, not for any kind of personal gain. Having a long term goal like a comic has been incredibly helpful and has pretty much singlehandedly fueled my passion and love for art so far.
