Penwagon's story has some insanely good shot composition, holy moly. The way they use camera movement and center of frame to draw focus... Cinematography on point.
What I liked in Penwagon's is how it focuses on character. The older character is in an interesting conflict with being the one to assume responsibility for the other which we gather in dialogue, but they feel pressured and like they won't be able to do what they have to do in this harsh environment. The younger character is much more independent and confident and takes on the role of comforting the older one, but also fails to grasp the severity of the world around them. This sets up a good balance between them. One's strength will be the other's weakness, which sets up room for growth. The animation style and shot choices as well makes this come off very clear with things like the hand shaking, the expressions complimenting their personalities, and the final part of the scene being the two fire the gun together showing they work best as a team and will grow from each other i.e. the first gaining confidence and the second character grasping the reality of the situation.
Plus the character design was so appealing, and the character animation was so emotive! The expressions and the body language were just *chefs kiss.* Really made you feel connected to and invested in the characters.
Penwagon won with that FREAKIN' PHENOMENAL Voice acting and those SLICK Sound effects!! (i especially love those pounding werewolf steps and scratches on the countertop)
also I was lookin' for snacks, and theeen ... ... I found *THIS Thing!!!* - this quote right here literally does everything. It's comedy, it implies that they're in a gas station / mall with snacks, AND THEN BOOM, SHOTGUN! Where did she get that? BOOM, dead body!
@@kevenzepineapple6783 Oh! I didn't know that. I'll go looking for it. Thanks. When you say that you "hope he does", do you mean you hope he does stop?
@@user-of1wz6dc5e no but he was saying that he didn’t wanna play character that makes people not wanna draw because there was some comments like that and he wasn’t happy with that
Things i love about Penwagon’s animatic. 1. It shows the character relationship/dynamic. It’s so specific and done with clarity that you can imagine many situations with the duo in it. Also recently i just realized, how much depth character relationships can add to storytelling, by comparing 2 Valorant championship mvs, “Die for you” and “Fire again”. The storytelling in “Die for you” is so much more compelling than in “Fire again” imo. 2. It got clever humor. The way that girl just casually pulled out a shotgun and gestured towards the gory corpse. It’s fun. And I think the usage of camera movement when she said,” that guy.” really shows the casualness at the moment, then it instantly switches to the nervous character’s perspective on this situation, by showing the gory detail of the corpse in the front, and the nervous character’s expression in the back. Boom, Contrast. 3. The characters change in this 1 minute. The nervous one got bolder with encouragement from the girl. The girl comes from “keeps giving the nervous character more things to stress about”, to “provide the nervous one emotional support, and eventually defeating the anxiety”.
Okay replacing the wands in Harry Potter with guns was hilarious. It's also a genius social commentary about how guns and wands in the hands of kids are equally dangerous.
13:25 oh my god, that was great. My only critique is to have her twirl her finger skate after dodging the bus to wordlessly show us she had beaten death. The narration saying ''lexi won'' is just a bit underwhelming and even uneeded. But damn, loved the concept of taking the victory and twisting it into a loop. Brilliant idea
i think penwagon won because the last scene that scene was PHENOMENAL how he did that camera work omg it was sooo beautiful and the way you don't know how to feel do you feel horrified or kinda happy or WTF IS GOIIN ON that type of stuff + the slick composition of every key frame
the story with the death guy and how it all looped was badass would love to see a show or book based on that idea. I've had ideas kinda like that in the past but that was a much better version, super cool.
Penwagon's composition was great, but on top of that, I could really feel like the characters were alive and going through a traumatic moment, that little girl has guts 😂
honestly part of me wants to send in some of my art just so i can figure out what’s wrong with it, but the other part doesn’t want to be absolutely roasted lmao
Overrated?. I mean, you're trying to tell a story with a defined characteristics not an artistic piece that can be transform into multiple shapes, sounds, length and meaning. Like something experimetal where you don't have a set of rules.
Radsechrist wins this for me. I thought the tech deck thing was going to be lighthearted, but instead it was a very dark and chilling concept. I’m such a sucker for temporal causality.
ok ok very off topic but this vid just showed up in my reccomended and I was like "why not" and withing the first minute I was just ">:0" while looking at your face because you look so fakely pretty in the best possible way. ok that's it
Hey I'm not sure if anyone is going to answer this comment but I'm currently learning portrait drawing, when will it be a good time to learn animation or at least gesture for animation
Penwagon has the most polished storytelling structure and composition but the entire thing is too mainstream Hollywood for my taste even the shots are what you expect them to be.
So what’s the next contest, these always inspire me and me and my animations would love to juice it up or whatever. The point is I want to put my animations in because these are awesome. I like to be surrounded by folks who live for this shit like me, so what’s the next challenge or did I already ask that?!

YES, "grasping the reality of the situation". I couldn't agree more. because she acts so casually in this intense environment.
