Interesting list, thanks for putting it out there and pointing out the values. I now have a couple on the short list to try. Cheers.
Happy tasting!
Awesome episode! 💯
Thx 😜
Happy to see you love the special cuvee. I love Bollinger too.the NV It's just slightly above the price of other big maison but it is definitely worth the extra 10-20 percent
It's definitely worth the little extra IMO
Oh i loved this! I think i was aligned with all of your picks! Haha!
Nicee even Egly???
@@drmatthewhorkey I wouldn’t say Egly is over rated since it’s decent value for its price, at least it’s entry level Brut Grand Cru.
@@drmatthewhorkey Yep. Good wine just overpriced.
Surprised you didn’t mention Ruinart. An Icon and a unique Champagne
I wasn’t in charge of the selection, Fabien brought up and I reacted
Always a pleasure to talk and share about wine with passionated and dedicated people :)
And doing overrated underrated vids is always fun
Fun and very informative. I agree about Moet.
hahah thanks. You have plenty of good Corpinnat and Penedes Classic over there to keep you happy
Nicolas Fuillait, picked up some on sale at $18, a steal, and their Palm,d Or , a great bargain
What a price!
I very much enjoyed this video especially as my wife is now working at Moet Hennessy and we have moved to Paris as a result! Her introductory trip which I was fortunate enough to accompany her on was to Champagne during the 2022 harvest. We visited Krug and then stayed in the Veuve Cliquot Maison Hotel Du Marc followed the next day by Ruinart, Dom Perignon (the P2 was amazing) and then a night in Chateau du Saran which is the Moet & Chandon/DP Maison. Finally a visit to the Moet & Chandon factory. What struck me was the passion that everyone in champagne has for their work. I feel that over the years I have just not appreciated the actual champagne as it was always secondary to whatever the celebration was, but in actual fact these are very impressive wines with real complexity (albeit some more than others).
Wowww those are some experiences, esp P2 from Dom
@@drmatthewhorkey and all those champagne houses said that 2022 was the best harvest of grapes, quality & quantity wise, in 50 years. Mind you, Frederic, chef de cave @ Ruinart says they still need to turn it into great champagne, but they are all super excited. We just have to be a little patient.
Have you guys ever reviewed the various offerings of perrier jouet?
Not on video, when I used to write a lot, yes
Matthew, have you checked the abv on Dom Perignon over the last few years? Seems to be inching up rather high?
Bollinger and Ruinart are my favorite
Both excellent producers!
Sadly Diebolt Vallois wasn't present in the lineup but their bottling of Fleur de Passion is absolutely phenomenal and as a bonus it has the capacity to age for a loooong time!
Cramant represents 😀
Ahhh I’ve seen that Champ but haven’t had it yet
Have you tried Roederers new entry level called Collection that is based around a base vintage with lots of added reserve wines based on a solera system n such.
Also no mention of Charles Heidsieck? Prob my fav producer/house together with Bollinger.
Charles Heidsieck is GREAT IMO… I had no control over the brands presented, that was Fabien surprising me
@@drmatthewhorkey I think Charles is bit of a champagne lovers champagne house, little bit unknown and such still. And their bdb Blanc de Millenaires is not at all as famous like Comtes etc.
Can’t help but jump in on the Charles Heidsieck talk. That’s a go-to for me, along with the Rose.
Agreed, the Collection 242 was super impressive! And Charles Heidsieck NV Brut is like a baby Krug, so good for the money.
@@gogreenmsu03 I have two Heidsieck Rosé 2008 in my ‘cellar’ waiting to get popped one day. Can’t wait to try one of those puppies.
Definitely agree on Moët, it isn't up to much and is quite over priced. I've had a Cristal sitting for a few years and we keep promising to open it when something important happens, graduation, engagement, house purchase. Those have all happened and it's still there on the rack. Maybe the wedding day will be the one.
Ohhh enjoy it when you pop it open
I'd go for smaller houses' vintage Champagnes as they might be a better bang for the buck than big house NV. I totally agree with Cremants are generally under rated and we're spoiled for choices ( d'alsace, loire, bordeaux, bourgogne etc..). I usually keep a bottle of Peller Estate Ice Cuvee in my cellar for drinking
I actually prefer good, big houses like Bollinger to growers often bc they hAve more reserve wines to blend in… just my hot take
@drmatthewhorkey At least trying smaller houses keep their lights running. Another factor is the price of big houses are getting more $$$$ sigh.....
Great episode, but I have a special question.
I know all the champagnes you mentioned but besides this big names, are there other outstanding champagnes?
There are tons!! This was just meant to be for brands most people know. For more Champagne content check out the pinned comment.
Check out Paul Bara Brut Reserve Grand Cru - 100% grower champagne that I think is outstanding!
I quite like Pommery.
Taittinger NV; 36 months on lees.
Massively underrated for the money.
It’s delicious for sure!
@@drmatthewhorkey
Nocturne is also a lot of fun. We used to serve it midnight on NYE after big tasting menus.
I would give anything to afford the money to buy a bottle of Dom or Crystal champagne 🍾 . I have seen Dom for about 200 dollars a bottle in stores. And I seen Crystal for about 300 dollars in one store once. I can't afford either tho. But I have had veuve Clique it was good.
Maybe once in life!
Guys... what about champagne method sparkling wine from uk,South Africa and New Zealand...??? Would be great a wine tasting like that...
Already did a blind tasting video on that… th-cam.com/video/VgNTpFifwrM/w-d-xo.html
@@drmatthewhorkey have you tryed sparkling wines from Portugal? Not only from Bairrada...but many diferent areas?
Yes a lot of them!
There is a bottle of sparkling wine called Saint Hilaire. I would put up against any of those champagnes. For the price it’s amazing.
it’s from Limoux, which is where sparkling wine was originally discovered
Any thoughts on Piper H.?
I like their Rare special cuvée a lot
Best champagne I've ever had was Pol Roger Sir Winston Churchill 2002.
Followed by Dom Perignon 2003, Krug (NV), Duval-Leroy Femme de Champagne 2000, Joseph Perrier Josephine 2002, Drappier Grande Sendree 2010 & Tsarine Tzarina Cuvee. Probably in that order.
Biggest disappointment was Louis Roederer Cristal 2004. Never been a massive fan of Veuve Cliquot NV. Massively overrated. Quite like Veuve's Rose though. Laurent Perrier Rose is nice enough but overrated (especially at the price point). Lots of better Rose Champagnes out there.
Ahhh that Pol Roger is great!
How about a video on grower producers, Champaign of course
no Perrier Jouet? regular and Belle Epoque?
I wasn’t in charge of the lineup. I reacted to what I was presented…
Over and under is back...my favorite!
Ahhhh awesome!!
You guy should try Lermandier Latitude
It is good!!!
Amazing episode just don’t agree on VC to be over rated 😊
Thanks! It's all good if you like it
@@drmatthewhorkey 👍
Nice video
Yet i have to say
Your comments on Egly were....something.
Most you listed as underrated but Egly is vastly superior to most of the other champagnes in this video save some of the bigger name bottles., DP, Krug, Bollinger (and love Bollinger SC but Egly is just as good) but its overrated because of IG popularity?
No its not Salon or Comtes or Cristal...
But its outstanding bubbles.
SMH
But right on with your comments on Cremant.
Hahhaha it's a fabulous wine, lately I was just getting sick of seeing it so much on IG hahahah
So basically anything that isn't LVMH is underrated. Got it.
LOLOLOL I do like a lot of the LVMH overall portfolio tho
A brand review is quite stupid and unfair... mixing same video de entry and premium... it's totally difficult to watch for someone who tasted some champagne
At least know how to pronounce what you are talking about. VERVE Clicquot????? Veuve Clicquot describes their label as YELLOW, NOT ORANGE. A joke.
👏🏼
I wouldn’t be surprised if in all LVMH champagnes you found the same champagne, it is just excellent marketing as with all LVMH luxury products 😂😂😂😂😂😂
🤪🤪🤪🤣😂
