Glen Campbell and Merle Haggard reunited - The Legend of Bonnie & Clyde (1969)

  • Not everyone knows that Glen, as a top studio session musician, played guitar (and sang harmony) on some of Merle's biggest hits from the sixties. Here they are, reunited in the television studio, to perform "The Legend of Bonnie & Clyde" together with John Hartford. Notice Glen recreating his intro. That's what great studio musicians do: come up with an instantly recognizable guitar riff to start off the song.

When I watched the show as a 12 year old I loved when he got together with other guitarists and did this.

Notice at the 2min mark it appears Merle thinks John is going take another run then pauses then continues the lyrics then John plays a few off chord notes for the comeback. Merle acknowledges with a smirk/smile. Awesome stuff!

John Hartford sure plays a more interesting banjo part than Glen did on the record. Hartford looks like he's balancing his checkbook in his head while he's ripping off those licks and chromatic runs. So effortless, yet so tasteful.
