- Chappell Roan chats with ET's Rachel Smith at the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards, airing live on Wednesday, Sept. 11, on MTV. The singer opens up about meeting Shaboozey fo the first time during VMA rehearsals. Chappell reacts to her nominations at the event, revealing she just learned she has four. She also dishes on getting overwhelmed by people yelling at her, explaining why she shouted back at the photographers on the red carpet. The pop star also praises her fans for listening to her requests about their 'creepy' behavior when she's out in public. Plus, she reflects on her and Sabrina Carpenter's careers starting a decade ago and how things are finally taking off now.
They didn’t show the paparazzi yelling “shut the fuck up” at her that in return lead to her to stand up for herself and say “you shut the fuck up” 👑
Because that didn’t happen. Why would a photographer be telling her to shut the fuck up? She just likes making a scene.
Yeah, that was messed up. Proud of her for being no nonsense.
true! buy why did the paparazzi tell her to shut up?
@@ka_gaertner the pap was telling another pap to STFU I believe, and in the heat of the moment and anxiety, she said "no you shut the fuck up" honestly same, girl
@@frankiefrank3422 The vid is up and the pap was yelling at another pap cuz he was salty he didn't get good pics of Chappell and she screamed at him to get him to leave him alone.
I love how she acknowledged that Sabrina has also been working hard for 10 years for her break and success.
Yes that was so cute!!
Love to see women supporting other women
she's literally such a supportive queen, they will never make me hate her
They need to collab
Wouldda been nice of her to give a shout out to Halsey as she was bringing visibility to LGBT ages before Chappell showed up but whatevs
“i’ve been famous for one month, this is not how it’s gonna go.” 😭 she is so real for that.
lol i love her even more for that now 😂😂
She's social media famous, not real famous though.
@@jamk2668she's both
"famous" 🤣 Not a single person in these comments could pick her out in a crowd of bald black men 🤣
@@jamk2668"real famous" what exactly do you class as "real" and "fake" in this scenario?
The only "real" way being what? Hired by a large scale production company? Or? Cause I'm really struggling to breakdown your pedantic mindset here.
she's looking at the interviewer with stars in her eyes and listening to her so intently, she's so cute and precious, we must protect her at all cost :c
I don't think I've seen Chappell in an interview yet in which she didn't listen closely to the question and then actually answer it intelligently... often entertainingly as well. I have to think reporters/interviewers notice and appreciate what an attentive and responsive subject she is.
IMO she's nailing this whole suddenly-a-popstar thing.
oh baby, i don’t think she needs protection. she’s slaying left and right, she’s protecting US
People disgust me
god you guys are creepy lol
um..
I literally saw her in the basement of a venue not even a year ago. I forced my husband to go because “you would be stupid to not see her live up this close because we’re never going to be able to do it again”. Proving us all right. We knew you were a star, babe! ❤ Now everyone knows!
Same ! Saw her in a small venue in Birmingham Alabama a year ago and am so lucky I got to do so
One of my biggest regrets in life was not getting to go to her show in Seattle back in 2022. Tickets were only $16! Sold out in like a day 😭
I told my boyfriend she's never gonna have tickets this cheap again because she is gonna be huge real soon. So so happy for her!
Im so jealous!
How I felt about seeing charli before she blew up this year. Saw her 5 years ago before pandemic ❤️🔥
@@Rawrmuffin0aw that’s awesome!!
We all saw what happened to britney and all the other 90’s/2000’s artists that took all the abuse. It’s refreshing to see and artist stand up for themselves and not be forced to accept the status quo
Should really check out Halseys stuff recently then
Funny, when Anthony Mackie refused to take pictures, he got dragged and called rude etc.
I’m glad she addressed that people are respectful, there’s so much hatred about her online that it’s good to know in person people have been great
100%!
@@lightandlove78there’s been people who are saying she’s ungrateful and that this is just how it is
She has been ungrateful
Why would u cut out the photographer yelling "shut the fck up" making it look like she got mad that the others were trying to get her attention? Oh yes, to make her look bad and get clout over her already ongoing controversy and harassment, right?
im guessing its because they're cussing & its a pg channel
@@beeyatch5574 the guy is the first one who cursed, why was he the only one who got cut off? and et didn't censor chapelle saying bitch so it's not really about cursing and censorship. they're just doing an evil edit on chapelle
@@danigirii The paps never yelled at her. The paps yelled at another photographer.
@@aynrandom3004 The photographer said "stfu genesis" genesis is her stylist helping her, she defended her back
@@danigirii ‘Bitch’ is not a word that gets censored on pg tv. Because it also refers to a female dog. While fu** certainly is censored
I like how genuine she is. A breath of fresh air nowadays tbh.
Not hating but idk what you mean cause most new celebs are trying to be relatable and genuine now 😶
@des_elise She's openly not putting up with the typical industry bs games and "fan service" by candidly setting boundaries. She worked her tail off for years to get to where she is, and isn't afraid to deal with her newfound fame on her own terms.
She called out the White House during pride in front of all of New York City.
She's turned down brand deals, saying "She's not doing anything that doesn't serve the music. “All the money goes to the world-building,” she says. “That's why I am saying no to every fucking brand deal right now, because I'm like 'Does it fit in this world? " No..."
She's candidly setting boundaries with overzealous fans.
She knows it's all about the art and the music, and she isn't going to let the toxic side of fame detract from that.
She is setting an example for everybody to not be afraid to stand up for yourself, even in intimidating and new situations.
She is the real fucking deal.
@@des_elisepersonally it genuinely feels like how it is watching a friend being taped. like she doesn’t put on airs. she seems to really be who she is authentically. it’s nice.
She’s actually so transparent and real I’m going to look into her more now. I only really know like 2 of her songs so let me go listen to her album
The ENTIRE album is AMAZING. It’s on repeat in my car nonstop
Casual was my most listened song in July, i have to listen to the album more
California is also sooo underrated @@sinzabun
The album is so good. No skips.
hear the album from beginning to end. I don't understand any other comment
This interview was so great. It's the connection. the eye contact, the actual listening, the questions having substances.
like honestly i think this interview is one of the best i’ve ever seen of a celebrity
SOOO TRUE. I loved all of her that night she was so sweet and cute and just having fun being relaxed and lifting up the other pop girls I love to see her like this!! She's so nice and it's good to see this after what happened the last few weeks.
Yayyy she along with Sabrina are such a breath of fresh air and I’m glad she mentioned her. Chappel is so adorably authentic, they both are but especially Chappel. So talented too.
she's everything, reminding people celebrities are humans, standing up for the LGBTQ+ community, not accepting bullshit from no one, so happy to have artists like her nowadays
she is the future of our culture, and it's a damn good one
i respect her so much for standing up for herself and i’m so glad it’s better than it was. iconic
Crying as a midwesterner ♥️ I am all emotional for her win!
i'm so glad she's doing better and getting harassed way less, she was brave for standing up to the creepy fans
Thank you mother.
she’s so gen z coded. cool seeing new gen artists
love that for her that she stands up for herslef and that she's breaking the toxic standard that known people should allow others to step on them just for the sake of "saving face". she's not like other celebs in the first place and doesnt care about what staights/males think lmaoo. love that for her
Her award so well deserved. After being suffering and taking hardship to round her rent, she is the vivid demonstration that perseverance and hard work could make your American Dream true.
every word she says here is so
I love how honest she is
I love her personality, you go do you and be a trailblazer in the industry Chappell! We'll be right here behind you, you deserve to be respected!
So happy for you Chappell. Keep yourself safe and healthy, thank you so much 💖
Props to the interviewer! Really great job asking the questions I wanted to know.
this is one of the best interviews ive ever seen! the interviewer is very genuine and so sweet!
It’s important to set boundaries, and I’m concerned at how aggressive the reaction seems to be for her just asking for privacy.
I saw it as just a bunch of parasites grasping for attention, desperate to get views by any means available, latching onto the hem of a new superstar as she rises.
They're meaningless. Nothing's going to stop Chappell now.
She’s so empowering and adorable AF. I love the ending. “Keep that in miiind.” 😂
Props to the correspondent for doing her homework. This was a GREAT and thoughtful red carpet interview, usually they're mindless
They did her dirty with that edit! The dude cursed at her. She clapped back ain't nothing wrong with that.
Yeah there is, man. Cuz there is more to it than that. When I first saw the clip I thought the same exact thing, but on further inspection, I think her response was not appropriate at all. Celebrities that are making a public appearances are expected to maintain a level of decorum no matter what these photographers are saying to them. How that guy was acting was not okay by any means, but the good celebs with PR training stay classy. Chappel, however, decided to have an outburst at an event that she was graciously invited to and able to be apart of as a brand new artist on the scene.
Bro what? What is this incredibly snooty take on decorum? Why are you saying that people are just supposed to take abuse? That’s so fucking weird
Also, she wasn’t ‚graciously invited‘ (implying she has to be demure and grateful), she was there because of her success. What you’re describing is a really inhumane mindset
@@jonathansendker7871.....
Cutting out the photographer cursing at her is an...interesting choice. I'm NEVER going to be annoyed with a celebrity setting boundaries for herself, especially when people are constantly trying to follow HER FAMILY to try and get close to her
Im so proud of chappel for standing up for herself paparazzi can be so cruel.
She is such an lgbt icon!!! Thank you for mentioning my trans sisters! I love you Chappell! We go through so much and I don’t even leave my house because of it, so people like you that have a voice, mean so much to me! 🥹🥰
@1:24 Two queens in one frame (Sasha Colby and Chappell Roan)
Just realized chapp isn’t wearing her typical makeup LOL
K but shoutout to Rachel Smith for doing such a great job of interviewing her. She was so warm and responsive and it seemed like Chappell was really comfortable talking with her. It was nice to see :)
i’m glad she feels she’s being heard 💞
SHES SO PRETTY HELP 🥺
I looooove all of her interviews that night you can tell she's a fun and genuine person and she comes off so much cooler and relaxed than in her writter interviews. Love to see her relaxed and fun like this!!
Pop girlies, drag queens, trans queens. She's her to lift people up. Good for her. Also Lady Gaga speaking up for trans people at the Grammys was so important.
i’m happy she speaks on what she won’t stand for, because a lot of celebrities get taken advantage of because they REFUSE TO. good for her, hope she has a long happy career ❤
VERY proud of this young lady!!!
So happy that she could voice what she needed and that people listened to her.❤
"People yelled at me and I yelled back" Chappel is the best chaos goblin, love her.
Good for you, Chappell Roan, for standing up for yourself!!
I'm so glad people listened and stopped being creepy
Chappell Roan is one of those rare people who you see succeeding and you just want to cheer her on. What a gem.
*SHE IS YOUR QUEEN! BOW! SHOW SOME RESPECT!* ❤😢
Chappell and Sabrina are my favorite artists rn!
This whole “Chappell Roan screams back at paparazzi” thing makes me think of when I was lucky enough to meet David Tennant at a a convention. He was running late from photo shoots with fans and people waiting for signatures started getting hateful and talking about “how they paid for his time and he should be there on time,” and someone else pointed out it wasn’t his fault that he was running late and I added that, “he’s a human being and he could not be here but he is and everyone should be mindful of that because he doesn’t owe us anything” and “if we want him to do more fan events in the future we need to give him some grace” and people started to simmer down. It’s like Roy Kent in S3 of Ted Lasso having to remind everyone “no one knows what’s going on in each others’ lives” and we need to remember to treat each other like human beings and we’re not owed anything from people whether they’re a celebrity or not. I really admire her for standing up for herself and being strong to show everyone just because this is “the way it is” doesn’t mean it HAS to be…
I love that Chappell is expanding how we understand and talk about celebrity. These are human beings and they deserve the same amount of respect that anyone else does. They’ve got mental health to take care of. Just be kind to them. Let artists make art, don’t treat them like gods.
I'm so proud of her ♡
Good for her that she spoke back, people don’t get to throw shit at others just because she’s famous just to avoid public backlash. Period.
I’m not a big fan of her music but she really deserved the praise for her VMAs performance and also her live vocals - it was impressive
She deserves to feel safe in this world like everyone else, good for her!!!
On the plus side, it's nice to hear that people (fans) are being more respectful and less creepy!
omg she's so precious! Really hope her succuess continues 💖
I’m so happy people listened oh thank god
the darker makeup look suits her so well :D
i love her...i hope she can handle that crazy industry because it needs real ppl like her...
We need more female celebrities setting boundaries and standing up for themselves in the face of objectification and deshumanization. Stans and photographers have gotten too comfortable treating them like shit and acting like they own them.
I love that she shout-outs Sabrina as well! I love her so damn much
Yess! CHAPPELL NEEDS TO BE A SUPER TEACHER TO GIVE PEOPLE LESSON ABOUT GOOD BEHAVIOUR IN SOCIETY!
Our society desperately need that!
Chappell Roan is simultaneously very demure and also brat. It's giving.
Artists being talented, creating art and entertainment is giving enough to the world.
They don't have to hug, take pictures and pretend to be comfortable with people they don't know personally.
It's not thanks to us if she's famous now, it's thanks to her talent which touched us.
People can enjoy her art and find comfort in it, they can also hate it and pass, that's the end of the story.
I LOVE THIS WOMAN, I really do,I love what she's doing for the artists, the industry and queer people in general. I love how she establishes boundaries,we NEED that,we can't lose more talent and people due to the fact that people just don't know how to be respectful. You go queen,we've got you!❤❤
She's so real I'M JUMPING UP AND DOWN FROM EXCITEMENT I LOVE HER🤩🤩🤩
wow she is so transparent😍😍
Shes so fierce and unstoppable ❤❤❤❤
Queen Chappell roan!🫶
I love what she stands for so much. She’s going to change the culture in big positive ways.
i love her so dang much
Love the energy between them here, Chappell seems confortable, this interviewer is a gem! 💕 So respectful and warm and charismatic. Who is she?
It makes me so happy that famous women are cheered on today for speaking up on the harassment they face! It's a stark contrast to the days of young Britney Spears... when she was demonized for expressing any distate she had for unwanted public attention. The times they are a changing!
she yelled at them because they are assholes that's why. The fact that all celebrities dont yell at them is beyond me
......
She’s giving Roan of Ark vibes ❤️
She’s very authentic I love her
shes so good at being the icon celeb that others wished they had the confidence to
she is so stunning
The way Chappell looking at the interviewer it’s giving Taron Egerton looking at Hugh Jackman 😂
the queen of setting boundaries!
she’s just so gorgeous omg
2:50 wow , actually amazing.
her outfit/look... wowowoow. always so so good.
She clapped back to someone saying shut the fuck up to her! Love her so much
so authentically and unapologetically herself, it is beautiful
omg i could listen to her talk for hours
She's fantastic. Bravo!!!!
I’m so excited for this generations pop girlies
Most iconic moment of the VMA
We stan a girl who sets boundaries!! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
More power to her!❤
the interviewer correctly predicted her outfit change that's a true diva
The nails are everything!
She’s so real, I love her
I really like this interviewer and her accent is adorable. And Chappell obviously
She is having FUUUUNNNNN! So happy for her that she came to common ground with us fans and she can enjoy her success
Good interview
She has been almost famous for 3 minutes and behaves like... GenZ!
Can you imagine her surviving an almost 50 year career AT THE TOP OF THE GAME like Madonna?
I can't with these starlets! This is too hilarious...
So I'm a gay that didn't get all the hype around her. But having finally watched her express herself in interviews and public spaces I totally get it. Her strong vulnerability is so refreshing it's making every "celebrity" look less human than they already seemed.
Love her. Stick up for yourself, nobody else will.
