My favourite part of the whole night was when she snapped at the photographers. Chappell is on track to being THE trailblazer for a complete restructure of celebrity culture. She’s not putting up with any bullshit, she’s setting extremely firm boundaries, and she’s not allowing the industry to abuse her the way they abused Britney Spears and countless other women in the music industry. I LOVE CHAPPELL SO MUCH 😭💖
Omg I’m glad it’s not just me - I swear every performance I kept thinking “damn, I wish I could…ya know… HEAR them” bc the backing tracks were too fucking loud
The thing that I find more than a little amazing is that she's doing that performance dancing, fighting, and singing in plate and chainmail armor. Yeah, it's probably plastic, but damn! And she did win Best New Artist!
@@smokeyangelav Nonsense. I'm an audio engineer and I know what live vocals sounds like - this ain't it. Her mouth doesn't match the diction you are hearing. Go watch some live concert videos of Michael Jackson from the late 80s and listen to what real singing while moving sounds and looks like.
For anyone that is confused by the theme: The song is about her dating a woman but the woman keeps pretending she isnt “really” into women. So Chappel is literally fighting through a fortress full of men to try to get a message to the woman she loves
She was nervous, running out of breath quickly…understandable. Still pulled it off really well but, live she’s usually much stronger sounding. But it was baby’s first choreo, pyro, and award show with audience of her peers. I’d be freaking
also those swords swinging constantly around her... they must be dull, just for theatrics, but even i was stressing out that they might hit her in middle of the performance
Can’t imagine how hard choreography would be while singing, especially since she doesn’t do choreography at her shows. Sure she moves while singing at shows, but doesn’t act out scenes like here. Going from smaller venues to large crowds at musical festivals to VMAs in just a few months. 👏👏👏🎉 Kudos to her, would have been shitting myself
Your analysis was so satisfying! I immediately subscribed because your reaction was so fun to see. As a performance artist, it has personally been such a joy to watch Chappell with all of her live performances. Of course, her recorded music is absolutely amazing too! But I feel like she really shines live. Definitely on my concert bucket list to go see! I also have had a sneaking suspicion of her being an ex-theater kid and I feel like this particular performance convinced me lol. I really want to write a musical for her, or to see her produce a musical - or just have some sort of hand in creating a musical. I feel like it would be awesome, and she certainly has the talent for a Broadway show. Also somebody else mentioned in the comments about the chainmail armor - I believe that it may actually be metal, but probably a very light alloy. With the way that it moves with her, I really don't think it's plastic. I also don't know if you saw at all, but Chappell wore 3 coordinated outfits related to her performance - one on the carpet, the armor in this performance, and a separate outfit for accepting her award. I saved a lore analysis video to watch later that breaks down the themes of her performance and costumes. I also highly recommend watching her acceptance speech, it made me cry lol. I truly believe that she is one of the greatest artists of this generation, and I can't wait to see what she does next.
Great reaction! I thought she sounded so smooth. Saw someone's phone footage who was there and the crowd singing along was loud. I thought the mic could do with being louder as the backing arrangement was very loud too. Also for Sabrina's performance and other's that night. Such a hard song to sing breath wise. Unsure where i'd take a breath.
I love the moment at 4:17 where you're just so stunned you cant even move and left speechless by that amazing chorus. I know the feeling, I get goosebumps every time!
She’s always with her band when performing live… I think that this recorded track made everything sound different. I loved the show, but it was not her best vocal/ emotional performance. But I can’t lie that I’ve been dreaming about this whole imagery set, this drag Joan of Arc is sooooo beautiful and nerdy
@@Glassdoll208yep, but what we hear and maybe what she’s hearing, is the very loud backtrack… it’s not a common thing. When she performs live we can hear the drums… It seems that this big and perfect show asked for all this different decisions (heavy clothes, loud backtrack) that made her feel different in her body (her main vocal instrument). I really really loved it, I’m a dancer, not a singer :) But we’re watching the rising of a great star and I think that all of her power when performing live comes from her body responding to the band, and this was a whole new situation 😊
Great analysis. Chappell has amazing pitch, but like a lot of pop singers she can lose a little control in the lower registers, perhaps due to the point of projection being more forward than say in theatrical singing (does this make sense?). Anyway, it's not a criticism, it's her style and it works brilliantly. What she does have is incredible control at higher pitch. Just listen to her vocals on My Kink is Karma - astounding flexibility.
Chappell, the unique artist of does a song 60% in head voice with a breathe voice, 20% in chest voice and 20% with a potential mixed voice Changing frequently the 3 types of voice
Excellent Analysis of the great and dynamic voice of Cappel Roan. I would like you to analyze THE WARNING, the 3 girls band caugth me up. It could be interesting to know your opinion about their music. I´m sure you can find so much material in each songs, I recommend you The Pepsi Center performances of " CHOKE" or "HELL YOU CALL A DREAM" to begin. Congratulations!

am i the only one that gets major stranger things vibes from this song?? and in the best way possible! i feel like id hear this in a scene of them having fun or something lol! awesome reaction ❤
@@ZoeStibiVocalCoachYeah, they took it down a whole step. (For original commenter) Sometimes singers do it for more difficult songs to save their voice. With all the touring she’s doing maybe she was feeling under the weather. Or just wanted to sound as good as she could on a difficult song with so much upper register.
I love the studio version of this song but for live performance. it seems like she can't really hit the high note like Cyndi Lauper used to be able to do it?
As far as I’m aware, Cyndi Lauper didn’t ever sing Good Luck, Babe! by Chappell Roan, so technically she didn’t used to hit the high note in this song🤪 (This is meant as a light-hearted joke)

my only critique is that the vma's made her mic wayyy too low :/ you could tell she was killing it but it was definitely hard to hear her
YES THE MUSIC WSS TOO LOUD😭😭😭
Yeah, I was too bummed I couldn't hear her voice properly because of the loud music... she slayed it though!!! 🔥🔥🔥

Plus the Joan of Arc / Lesbian playfulness. Plus swords are very lesbian.

I agree she is a once in a generation artist. She actually was kicked out of theatre club! Chappell’s teacher told her she wasn’t a good fit. Crazy.

Love this song! It’s so hard, she lowers it when she does it live, at least in the lives I’ve seen and I totally get it
