Although there was not not much of technology, video graphics, computer animation etc excellent movies were made in Those days, star trek, star wars, to name a few.
I recently saw a photo of Blue Thunder looking derelict and weathered at the Studio backlot tour. Such a crime, It should be restored and in an aviation museum.
@@matthewcaughey8898 That was at Disney Studios in Orlando. It's been long gone, no idea where it is now. It wasn't the full helicopters btw. It was just the cockpit section they used for up close shots of the actors. As I recall the actual helicopter was reconverted back into a regular Gazelle.
The camera work here is amazing. There are barely any FX, most of it is good old school hard work. And Roy Scheider was a great lead. And the soundtrack. Man, I love this movie so much. Deserves more love and more respect.
2:31 really impressed me, and also it looks like it wasn't even an closed set, people on rooftop watching, cars and people going about their daily business, WOW!
Indeed, those stunts appeared to be really executed in the city. Flying between buildings. Yeah, I saw the people on the roof tops. Those stunt pilots were amazing. I understand Blue Thunder' was a beast to fly. Being nose heavy and all those addon prop timings. I doubt any City today would allow a stunt like this. This film is a treasure.
Love the fact that it was shot using real, manned helicopters (the Blue Thunder was an Aerospatiale Gazelle that was specially modified, was airworthy and flown for the movie). If this movie was remade now, it definitely would have been CGI-ed from start to finish.
The screen used shell for Blue Thunder was on ‘display’ in the junkyard portion of the tour at Universal Studios for many years. No idea where it is now. Maybe it’s still there?
@@dakkenblah1450 I was a kid when the movie came out and immediately recognized it as a Gazelle. Power train, rotor, landing skids, and the Fenestrom tail all put together made it obvious.
ImpendingJoker Three RC models were used. Two RC F-16 fighter planes. And one RC model of Blue thunder. That model was used for just one scene brief scene, the 360 loop Blue Thunder does near the end of the movie. There was also a full sized mock-up built on a sound stage for closeup shoots of the actors in the cockpit when Blue Thunder was 'flying at night'. Filmed against a projection backdrop. All other scenes were of real helicopters. There was some slight of hand with camera angles to make Blue thunder seem faster and more agile than it was. But those were real helicopters flying down city streets. All practical. The only thing that comes close to "CGI" is the mock HUD targeting displays.
Saw a video interview with McDowell during the filming of this sequence he kept flinching and covering his eyes during the film takes because he was scared so bad by the pilot who was flying the Hughes 500. They had to reshoot a lot of this footage because of that. Roy on the other hand was not a problem he was very cool about the stunt flying and he was really enjoying the ride he said.
We technically had that on our scout helicopters in the Bundeswehr, together with armored floor plates for the pilots, but it made the machines extremely heavy. This was around 1982.
An excellent match-up. The Hughes was lighter and more maneuverable, Blue Thunder gave up maneuverability for the weight of armor. Firepower was about equal as long as the chin turret was disabled, but the Hughes would carry more ammunition.
It would seem Blue Thunder's lack of maneuverability was a real thing. I understand it was nose heavy and carried a lot of weight due to all the prop weapons and trimming they put on it for the movie.
It's a shame Hollywood doesn't have the balls to do a film with this much practical effect/stunt work in it. It would be all CGI style game cut scenes nowadays
People keep knocking CGI tech. The CGI in Top Gun Maverick was first rate. You couldn't film a dogfight like that in the past. It looked perfectly like real fighters actually flying.
How ironic that Cochrane spent a good chunk of the movie downgrading Murphy's piloting abilities saying executing the loop was impossible then having Murphy execute the loop on him. Be careful whst you wish for.
They flew these helis in some incredibly tight places. There are some shots of RC models (in case of BT you can tell by the rotor head, model has a two-bladed rotor with a stabilizing bar and the full size has three blades and no SB) but most of it seemed to have been flown by real, manned helicopters. Incredible.
Murphy? No he would have done a few weeks at the worst and would have been exhortated. Now the other guys would have been sent to Cubas federal prison after this for life
When i was a kid i was enthralled with the aerial sequences. Watching this movie as an adult you realize all the themes, conspiracies, criminal activities, political intrigue the bad guys were really up to.The loop at the end sold it for me.😊 Come on you tub of shit!
A fantastic sequence for the time. One that probably no city would give a permit for in this day and age. So it would all be CGI. This movie is a treasure.

Growing up in the '80s and watching this movie, loved it. Still do obviously. Of course, me and my friends would argue which helicopter was better. Airwolf or Blue Thunder. I always chose the Thunder. Looks badass, sounds badass, you have that gun looking right at you, with the "LIVE" lever and the name........... Blue Thunder. What's not to like.
the Blue Thunder multi role attack helo in this movie is based partially on the Aérospatiale Gazelle SA342 (Block III) multi mission helo gunship & AH-1R Cobra multi role attack helo . . . blended into one helo . . .
Always loved this movie, but you gotta laugh at the "armored canopy" which is flimsy plastic, the non rotating gatling gun, and the lack of carnage from the MD500s 30mm cannons
Shame they couldn't be bothered to place a small pilot dummy/puppet into the MD 500 breakaway model. I always did that as a kind of joke in such models, even in full size cars we blew up.
I lived very close to Van Nuys Airport, one day I saw Blue Thunder flying in to land! this was well after the film had been released. Back in the days before carrying a camera was a normal thing
How many people were slaughtered during this whole skirmish? Of course, that makes it even better. When Murphy misses those shots at 3:43 how many people in that apartment were killed? The total lack of awareness for the surroundings is too good to be true.
Interesting that they only had the budget to do this in one take, so all the residents had to be evacuated from the buildings during shooting so they wouldn't get hit by any of the bullets being fired by the helicopters.
You know you're watching classic 80's movies or TV when there's a 'Turbo Boost' switch!
And AirWolf as well. Push button / flick-switch turbos was something that was fancied back in the 80s.
How right you are, Michael.
You are goddamn right sir!
Ridiculous speed in Bugs Bunny Cartoon
And a Vulcan minigun. Gotta have one of those...
Rest in peace Roy Scheider
WHO remembers AIRWOLF ❤
Great acting on McDowell’s part as he had a great fear of flying.
Did he really? That’s awesome....
Got airsick during filming this fight.
When director John Badham said cut, he'd be like, "Oh, my God, Oh, my God!"
‘HE DOESN’T LIKE TO FLY??? WHAT DOES THAT MEAN, JACK!!!’ 😅😂🤣
I also read he was air sick
Malcolm McDowell plays such a great bad guy in this flick.
Hard to imagine this movie was over 40 years ago and still kicks ass today.
Damn right.
I love it as a kid
The movie does rivet to the story and the action
Nothing electronic. Synthesized. Or fakery
Yes just was before airwolf the TV show 1984

Oh yeah, Maverick showed a dogfight that didn't actually happen. Excellent scenes.
"That's impossible!". And that's what made Murphy a better pilot than Cochrane.
Got under Cochrane and blew him out of the sky!
Helicopters can do full loops if they are powerful enough which Blue Thunder definitely was.
Cochrane was insane!
@@reesejabs1895 Its not just about the power. They need to have modifications to the rotors and fuel and oil system.

Warren Oates (Capt Braddock) final film.

Love the noise from Blue Thunder. Iconic helicopter 🚁 sound
That's the sound Gazelles make. They didn't add anything because it didn't sound like US copters of the time.
But...but...but... It looks like a French Gazelle in drag. Now we need DCS" BLue Thunder mod that uses Gazelle FM.
