Both Smokey Robinson and Ray Charles, when asked who was the best soul singer, replied Joe Cocker. Please, please do Joe Cocker's You Are So Beautiful.

By far my favorite song of his. My wife loves it because I don't dance... ever, but with a little liquor in me I'll dance with her to that song. ( That's usually when she cuts me off. 😂)

A good point, but all the best blues singers were hearing it as pure experience separated from US cultural baggage by being British, and then lighting it up with this freedom they'd never had before. They really had nothing like the blues and rock in the UK so it pollinated into....basically all the best of classic rock.

Hard to believe he is not in the Rock and Roll hall of Fame, but he covered many songs and made them his own with that awesome voice. I love his rendition of The Letter.

So while this song resonates with the Beatles version he took blue eyed soul before it's time and prog rock and whatever Joe singing really is like and mushed it into something quite original. Still feels like rock similar to ELP and BTO and guess who but at the same time rock was soul sped up and this was just rock slowed down so to speak.

  • @FatGuyLittIeCoat

Not many people were able to improve a Beatles song, this is how a cover should be, a whole different vibe than the original.

    • @RadeticDaniel
      @RadeticDaniel 2 ปีที่แล้ว

I still like the original Beatles arrangement better, but you are right about one thing, Joe Cocker's covers are a work of his own in arranging and interpreting.
So many of his versions like You Are So Beautiful and Unchain My Heart for me are the best versions of each song =D
And his version of With a Little Help From My Friends is easily the second best recording of it by far!!!

The closest singer to Joe Cocker, and what you liked about him, was his contemporary, Janis Joplin. If you haven't reacted to her, the live performance of Ball And Chain from the Monterrey Pop Festival is a stellar performance.

Old Beatles song, that he covered, and made it a huge hit. John Lennon said, "I guess this song now belongs to Joe, our (Beatles) good friend." He actually had another hit written by The Beatles, "She Came In Through The Bathroom Window". Joe Cocker is a British "Soul singer" that died in the last few years at about age 75 I think. One of my favourites by him is Delta Lady. This genre is ROCK. Rock is a fusion of a number of different influences. Blues, jazz, folk, classical and even Medieval music. Music wasn't pidgen holed back then like it is today. If you can find the version with Leon Russell or the Woodstock version it is even better. Cheers

Joe sings ugly in a beautiful way. If he and Chris Stapleton could have shared a stage I think time would have stopped.

The great Joe Cocker. Rip! If I had the opportunity, I would've gone to see this man sing just one song. He's that good.

Joe was one of a kind. You can hear influences of blues, soul, and even a bit of big band.

This was put out on TV,The reason that they only show Joe in 5 second clips is that the producers thought the way he flails around he would scare the older viewers. lol

When I hear the music of my generation late 60s into 70s I realize how blessed we were to have experienced Joe Crocker, Temptations, Smokey, Janis, Jimi ad infinitum... it was an incredible time for music. I'm glad you enjoyed Joe Cocker... I see what you mean about Chris Stapleton!!
Love music and I'm a 77 year old white lady!

Since I am a child of the late 70's-80's and my parents are of the 40's-50's. I grew up listening to this music period a lot. All I can think from this song is The Wonder Years show.
