"A voice that can strip paint" as one music journalist remarked. Ray Charles once described Joe Cocker as the best soul singer of his time, maybe forever.

Strip paint...but he filled it with such a rich pallet of colours I never knew could exist. It's rare that I can describe a song as colorful, but this has the sunrise of a mountain valley worth of colours.

When Cocker died, McCartney said this version was “mind-blowing” and was forever grateful for turning the song into a soul anthem. When it was first released, Lennon and McCartney sent him a telegram of thanks and congratulations, and took out an ad in the papers thanking him. Cocker was backed up by an all-star band in the recording.

Seeing you respond to the music exactly like I did shows that a good song will always be a good song. You point out how Joe Cocker feels the music within his entire body. He's not acting, he's feeling every note. He was known for letting himself go and feeling every note. Thanks my brother for helping to keep these tunes alive. You might also like another song he does called 'So Happy to be Standing Here Today'. Listen to the version that shows different pics of sunsets. Also a tune called 'You Can Leave your Hat On'. Check out Richie Havens at Woodstock, he was asked to go on early, as the other groups had not arrived yet (couldn't get through the traffic) so he went on and but ran out of material after a while. More Joe Cocker suggestions: "She Came In Through The Bathroom Window," and "Something." Funny story with those two songs. As the story goes, Paul McCartney was so imppressed with Joe's rendition of "With Alittle Help From My Friends" that back stage at one of Joe's concerts he gave him "She Came In Through The Bathroom Window." The Goerge Harrison snuck-up as Paul walked away, and gave him "Something." The other Beatles knew nothing of it until Joe released it. Next thing you know "Something" is on the Beatles album Abby Road. Actually, if your not familiar with the Beatles versions I suggest them too. Great video!

That would actually be in Bethel Woods. This is where concerts are now held, a great stage and nice covered seating area for about maybe 200 - 300 people. And then the rest of us poor middle aged slobs can sit on the downward slope of the hill like we are 18 years old instead of the 45 - 65+ that most seem to be. And paying those prices for dirt and grass sitting, amongst the hoardes of bugs and mosquitoes and the torrential downpours I experienced more than once does not make for a good time was had by all, regardless of who is performing. If you go, lay out the half a weeks salary and get the civilized seats under the covered enclosure. But be forewarned that it's a good 15 minute up hill walk to get to a port a potty if you need use one, and that's only 15 minutes one way !!!
