How Slovenia Produces Some Of The World's Best Honey

  • “Beekeeping is the poetry of agriculture” - this is an old Slovenian aphorism. In this small Balkan country, beekeeping is looked upon emotionally. Honey, the native “Carniolan bee,” the colorful beehives with their unique designs and construction - these are all permanent fixtures of the country’s culture. More than half of the country is covered with deciduous and coniferous forests.
A paradise for bees and the production site of one of the world’ best honeys.

Last month I bought a pot of honey made by a family that's been continuously producing their honey for generations ever since 1724. In Slovenia beekeeping is "a national sport". There are 2 million Slovenians and more than 11.000 of them are beekeepers. It's no coincidence that the oldest Slovenian magazine being continually released is a beekeeping magazine. It's been issued for 110 years.
Fun fact: In Slovenian language there are two different words for: "to die". One is to describe when a human dies, and the other when an animal dies. The bee is the only animal to be described with a "human" form of the word.

Then you may not have tasted real or even single origin honey at all. It's more or less an open secret, that China sells many tons of fake honey to Europe every year. They have developed a technique to make sugar syrup that meets the specification of simple honey - good enough to supply industrial honey brands all, over Europe who don't ask questions.

    GRAY BEE (Apis mellifera carnica)
The gray bee is a subspecies of honey bee that naturally inhabits the area south of the Alps,
north of Italy and east of Slovenia towards Romania (Engel, 1999, Ruttner,
1988.) Therefore, this bee is not originally only Slovenian. It is also autochthonous in Croatia, and long before its Latin name, which was obtained in Austria-Hungary.

You're right. But as beekeeping was already back then so important part of the Slovene/Carniolan identity the bee was named Carniolan... Same goes for Proteus anguinus, it lives also in other Balkan countries, but you will mostly hear that it is endemic to Slovene caves(which is only true for the black variety) Am Slovene btw...

If we go by geografical standards a minority of its land mass is on the balkan peninsula, but by that logic so is Italy. And if we go by culture its even clearer that it is not. And most people reffer to culture anyway. @@exnha1137

I won't get offensive as the previous person, BUT, beekeeping on proffesional level has been around for centuries in Slovene lands. This means keeping them bees in hives, not going out to steal honey from wild bees and thus destroying the colonies. And bees from traditional Slovene hives produce honey with much lower water content than any other, and l believe this is reason enough to call it one of the best honeys. Not THE best, but one of them.
