    Hey, Mr. Debt. This video was uploaded quite some time ago, but no one seems to have answered your questions asked within. I will answer as per my own experiences...but as no expert.
    Firstly, by profession, I am a veterinarian, and was one in the military for quite some time. I also grew up on a ranch, and have, as you say, "floored" plenty of cattle.
    In my experience in the US, most handlers use a stiff nylon rope. It holds its loop quite well. I did do a humanitarian trip through Central and South America, and their cowboys used exclusively soft ropes with hand-tied hondas...and were quite good with them!

      Many thanks for the information, it is always good to read people personal experiences. I personally was always under the impression that the rope was either very hard lay or stiffened in some way. Thanks for letting me know.

    Nice demo. Cattle working ropes today are specialized and quite technical for competitive ropers. Modern materials are nylon, nylon/polypropylene blend and polypropylene/polyester blend (polygrass, syngrass etc). 3 strand or 4 strand. Soft, medium, hard and intermediate stiffness some are core weighted depending on use and personal preference. Varying diameters and lengths for particular use (calf, steer header, steer heeler, utility ranch etc), personal preference or level of ability. They are preloaded (coiled) by heat treatment for loop retention and snap back. Some use a braided rawhide hondo, yes it's "hondo". My first that I still have is scant 1/2" waxed hard lay 28' 3 strand manila with tied hondo and leather "burner" that I used for ground roping/working corral calves. Rope's well worn like me. It's on the wall, I'm in the recliner. :) They aren't lariat or lasso, they are simply your rope. The ropes today are as golf cubs, everyone has a personal preference. However when working cattle on the ranch/farm you "dance with the one who brung ye" ie "what you got in hand". Mikko Snellman would be appalled with these ropes. :)

      Thanks for taking the time to share this information, I always love to hear about knots being used! I knew that when I started the video that a knot does not make a lasso. In one of the replies to this video somebody passes a link to a cow being cut up for such a thing. As for Mikko I am sure that he may have a rope for the job, as they do wrestle Reindeer in his part of the world?

    Though not a Cowboy(Vaqueros where I grew up)I now live in Utah, hard on the Wyoming and Idaho borders and count many ranchers and Cowboys as friends. First a note on nomenclature, Cowboys lasso critters (steers,horse, their sweethearts) with their lariats. Lariats were traditionally made of horse hair, spun by the Cowboys themselves(they even made the spinners to do this). The burners, as noted below, could be made from several materials, although the most beautiful and elegant ones I have seen are hand carved out of bone. I have also seen lariats made of leather.

    According to the wiki article on Team Roping (en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Team_roping), the rope used is a synthetic.
    Years ago, however, we used a hard-laid 3-strand manila rope, which was also heavily waxed. And the eye was a braided eye splice about a brass thimble.

    • @KnottingKnots
      @KnottingKnots  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, I can imagine that they are heavily waxed. When you see a lasso they behave like a wire hawser, but with less weight. Cheers for that!!

    Hello again John, good info. I suppose you could use figure of eight knots instead of overhand knots. they may be easier to undo if the whole shooting match was pulled very tight.

    Would there be some disadvantage to tying a Bowline and passing the standing end through the Bowline to create an adjustable loop as opposed to using the Honda knot?

    • @KnottingKnots
      @KnottingKnots  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You are now describing the Running Bowline. If it suits your needs, then use what you feel most comfortable with. What are you going to do with it?

    • @ghollisjr
      @ghollisjr 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@KnottingKnots Oh I was imagining using it for rounding up cattle and was just curious what the functional difference was between the running bowline and the honda lasso knot.

    • @KnottingKnots
      @KnottingKnots  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@ghollisjr From what I understand is that it is not just the knot that make this knot. The actual loop created by the knot, where the line runs through it, this is in some ways also made to be rigid. Maybe it is lined with a hard leather, the idea is that the loop does not collapse and the rope should run freely through the loop. Sorry, not a cowboy, but that is the best I can answer.
