  • Superfast Bowline How to Tie the Bowline Fast
The preloaded Bowline, is a really fast way of tying a Bowline. The idea is that prior to tying your Bowline, actually create a Marlin Spike Hitch. Then when you need to create the Bowline you just past the working end of your rope through the Marlin Spike Hitch and then roll your hand over the knot and your Bowline will be formed. This method can be used whether you just want to tie a Bowline or create a Bowline around an object.
What is the Bowline Used for? The Bowline is a great way of creating a fixed loop knot at the end of a rope. Often used for mooring boats, lifting and heaving. It is generally considered a very secure knot that does not easily jam when the rope is loaded. Also relatively easy to undo.
Ashley's Book of Knots : 1010 "The Bowline, Bowling, or Bolin Knot, sometimes called Bowling’s Knot. The name is derived from bow line, a rope that holds the weather leech of a square sail forward and prevents the sail from being taken aback. As the line or rope that provided the knot is no longer in use, the Bowline Knot is nowadays very apt to be termed merely the “Bowline,” the word knot being dropped."

Growing up in a Navy town many years ago I picked this up from an old salt who had learned it from WW2 guys. It’s a slip knot with the free end run through and then turned inside out! You’re the only other person I’ve run into that knows how to do it this way. He taught us to throw the end of the rope around our waist and tie the knot around us in a couple seconds or less.

@@KnottingKnots His story was they used it to retrieve swimmers under fire after they had done their survey work on a beach before a landing. Must have been one of their earlier efforts because I believe they had a slicker system during the heavy push in the Pacific. He was pretty good with a rope and I remember at least a couple of them!

It’s our goto method of bowline, it’s also essentially a Marlin spike hitch ending up as bowline, and sheetbend can be tied using the same method.

We use in yacht racing. Use that setup be for using a climbing harness on a halyard to swing out to the free end of a sail that needs a new line attached. Slip through the crinkle, tuck into the prep loop and tug on the tail as you swing back to the deck. We call it the Ninja bowline.
