I suggest putting a halfhitch on before the whip finish, just in case there's a problem with the whip finish, then things won't unwind and you lose the fly.

The best video I've seen that explains not only the hand motion, but the theory behind what's going on with the line. Thanks!

Thanks for all the time your put into your videos! My 13 year old son and I are taking up fly fishing and we are having fun! We started 3 years ago with a family friend. Went to West Yellowstone to fish for the week to fish multiple areas and was hooked since! We now learning to tie flies and anything else we can learn. From Central PA and lots of limestone stream trout fishing ... Thanks again for your videos!

The difficult part is pulling the knot right at the very end when hand whipping. It helps to have a bodkin or the tip of closed scissors so the knot doesn’t close up. Only seems to be an issue with small diameter threads.
As a side question: Kelly, is it true you’re a power lifter as well as fly fisherman?

This was so helpful. I've had the whip finish technique explained to me so many times but watching you explain this was a definite ah ha moment for me. Thanks for putting this out along with the rest of the videos you put out!

Kelly, could you demonstrate tying your version of a Montana Stone fly and a hornburg.

Love your videos, very detailed. I started watching to see your technique but I figured out if I kept watching this one on hand whip finishing I would mess my own technique up with what fingers I use. Keep em coming I get a lot out of them most of the time.

I prefer doing it by hand. I fnd the tool cumbersome and tedious, but i tie salt flies only

Great timing..yesterday I was talking to FlyShop owner about you doing this. Now that I see the method, I’ll never be able to use it.. my construction hands are like 40 grit sandpaper, sometimes I break thread just by brushing it, and soft marabou feathers will stick like glue! 🤨😂. Thank God for whipfinish tool. Thanks for all your Great videos! Have a Great weekend!🎣

Mad River raves about the Swimmin' Jimmy which you sell, and which may have originated in your shop. Any chance we could see a video on how to tie it?
