I agree the plague likely played a significant role, but this event also revealed how corrupt, ungodly, and easily manipulated the Church could be. This realization may have pushed Europeans to identify more closely with their nation rather than their religion

That's not the Great Schism... the Great Schism came in 1053, when the Catholics broke off the Orthodox church.

@@HiddenPapyrus Church history has been obscured and most in the west are not taught accurate history of Christianity. Eastern Orthodox Christianity is the ORIGINAL, Apostolic Church established at Pentecost in AD 33. For the first 1000 years, everyone, East and West, was Orthodox. The Roman Catholic Church are Papal Heretics, the First Protestants, and strayed from true Christianity. The Frankish Emperors were one of the driving forces of The Great Schism, subverting the True Religion for political reasons.
