As a Puerto Rican from Brooklyn who knows gentrification first hand and frequents Puerto Rico annually for a solid portion of the year (my whole life), I feel gringos WILL NOT move to Puerto Rico TO ASSIMILATE to the Puerto Rican people and culture. SOME American Gringos might assimilate, but not the majority. Obtaining property in Rincon, VSJ, Dorado is NOT the same thing as assimilating or becoming 1 w the culture. How does one even do that? For example, there are white Rastafarians singing Roots Reggae in Jamaica, i'm sure many Jamaicans enjoy their presence, but could you imagine if white rastas became the majority of that scene? Now apply that paralell to Puerto Rico's "everything". No amount of interviews will change this perception, the Gringo mainland persona & lifestyle leaves a dominant trail where ever they go. Mexico City 2023's young gringo gentrifier presence is quite large for example. Some gringos may assimilate, but there way of living will not be imposed especially when they have the financial advantage of many of our own. Pay attention Boriquas reading this to the patterns in the Lower East Side, Williamsburg and Bushwick. Were we born to be erased? The erasure is never ending. Please present an educated argument if u wanna talk smack. With love Asma 5 NYC

I am a full blooded Puerto Rican who was born and raised in the States and now lives in Guaynabo. I cannot relate to the Puerto Rican culture in any setting because all the jokes, references, and music that I like are all from and for American culture. So, it is only natural for me to go through a lot of struggles for the past two years that I have been living in Guaynabo, P.R. What crushes my feelings the most is how the term Gringo is used to describe people of American culture, regardless of being Puerto Rican ethnicity. Furthermore, I have never felt like I was receiving a compliment when being called a Gringo. It's like calling someone a spic or a wet back. The worst thing I experience is how much crap people talk about you when they think you can't understand them. And that happens so often with me at my job that it gives me a hard time. My aunt said I would have a hard time here in Puerto Rico because of how resentful people are of Gringos. My mother is fluent in puerto rican and American and she describes the phenomenon she encountered moving to puerto rico when she was a child as a culture shock. What was inappropriate in P.R. is not in the US. Puerto Rico is not at all like the suburban parts of the US. And the people that inhabit the island are pretty racist for all agreeing to call Americans Gringo. What did I ever do to deserve to be called outside my name. And such an ugly word at that. It even literally has go away built into it.
@@BobbyBrewers it's not going to go away m8, they're not trying to insult you either. now if someone says it with a negative tone, they could go f off.
I am from Williamsburg Brooklyn New York. I lived in the Williamsburg Housing Projects. I was drafted for military service and returned back home. I bought an apartment building in Williamsburg. I saw the handwriting on the wall about the coming GENTRIFICATION of Williamsburg and especially on the South side (Los Surdes). I moved to Puerto Rico and bought a farm here. When I drive to Aguadilla and pass through Ricon I see the GENTRIFICATION AGAIN. I even see it in Old San Juan. They have illegally privatized the beaches. I was stationed here before Isabella had any high rise apartments. I could walk down the streets and everyone had a piece of land where they grew food, and fruits. The Sugar Cane was massive. People were selling Sugar cane on the side of the road. But even that gone. From the commercials and the internet, I personally feel that Puerto Rico is being invaded. Look at what is happening in Jamaica! The Jamaican people cannot get access to the beaches. They are a fishing nation and they cannot even fish. Now as I write this c,two British BILLIONAIRE Brothers are planning to come to Puerto Rico and "invest" in real estate here.
Unfortunately Puerto Rico will become another Hawaii. Especially when it becomes a state. It will be too expensive to live here.
“Sharing the culture”. Great phrase.
In Puerto Rico we love outsiders, the problems are with the laws that help foreigners or people from the mainland who usually have more money to start buying a lot of properties and space with less restrictions and cheaper than the locals could. This is because of some laws that are in place, which are very pro-mainland (middle to high income US earners) to promote outside investment at the expense of the locals who on average make 13k to 18k a year; locals can’t compete.
As a gringo from what you people call us I do not have a lot of money okay? Most of the people from the mainland are middle class & the retired people are living on their little dinky social security check that's less than $1,000 a month I don't know why you people think we're all rich back in the mainland true there are some rich people like celebrities, models, singers, famous musicians, lottery winners & entrepreneurs living in California & New York but most of us are middle class or poor people & barely surviving!!!!!!!
@@jess97724 Yes you got a point, let’s say is more of a high earning from the mainland that are the ones that are causing some issues with locals, and are even building big walls from the places they are taking because they have lot of money.
That is not a problem, you haven’t started and business and provided jobs to people
I'm a gringo here currently. I'm here for work (blue collar). I don't get out much since we're working 12 hr shifts.
However, from what I have seen, it's a beautiful island with great and proud people, as they should be. A few more weeks, and maybe I'll be headed home.
What kind of work??
@@dougkalagian On the water.
Don't wanna be too specific.
I don't have any hate towards Non-Puerto Ricans who come to visit the island or if they want to move here because they love the culture and want to be a part of it.
The gringos I do have a problem with are the ones who promote and move to the island just to evade taxes and profit off exploiting our island. They come and buy up entire neighborhoods, historical sites, and public lands, and turn them into their own private resorts for wealthy Non-Puerto Rican tourists and raising the cost of living. It's causing massive gentrification and displacing real Puerto Ricans from their homes and some Puerto Ricans have had to leave the island. They are trying to turn Puerto Rico into Hawaii 2.0.
This is a part of the corrupt statehood party PNPs plan, they believe that if more Non-Puerto Ricans gringos move to the island, that that'll some how promote statehood. The governor himself Pedro Pierluisi even talks about using the tax incentives ACT60 for leverage to push for statehood. When the US government asked him to have them taken down, he said "If they want them brought down they need to make Puerto Rico a state" he also said "My stance has always been that statehood for Puerto Rico is the best option and until then the law is to attract population and new investment". And back in 2019 in some of the messages in Ricardo Rossello ex corrupt governor that was forced from office, in his group chat with some of the people in his administration they talk about Puerto Rico without Puerto Ricans and that that'll be wonderful.
But yeah, if gringos come to visit or if they move here because they really love the island, culture and people, that's fine. To live here just to evade taxes, exploit the islands beauty, and buy up a bunch of properties, that's another thing, and they should leave, Gringo Go Home.
Thank you again for sharing your valuable personal and political insight. We we're pleasantly surprised by all the mature and open-minded answers we received while recording this Sunday. Sometimes its easy to get caught up in the negativity and hate of the comments section of political posts on social media, and think that that is a larger reflection of the public sentiment. While this certainly wasn't an objective survey of public sentiment (our camera man is from the US), and people may answer these questions differently off camera and behind closed doors, most people seemed to share your open but balanced view. 🌟
@The Near Horizon Anytime!!👍 Excited to see the new video.
@@dougkalagian so this video was for what ? This changes nothing nor does it justify all the harm that y’all are doing

@@dougkalagian AH YES I HAVE SOME PLACES YOU CAN CHECK. GO TO THE PLACES THAT NEVER FORGOT THE USA BOMBING THEM BECAUSE THE PUERTO RICANS WANTED FREEDOM FROM THE USA. THE BOMBINGS CAME FROM TWO AMERICAN PLANES BOMBING THESE DEFENSELESS PEOPLE. GO TO THE TOWN OF UTUADO AND JAYUYA AND VIEQUES. OR GO TO THE TOWN OF PONCE. BUT GO DURING THE TIME WHEN THEY REENACT THE PONCE MASSACRE. THE MASSACRE THAT THE USA COMMITTED TO US. ALL BECAUSE WE WANTED FREEDOM FROM THE USA. GO TO THOSE PLACES AND ASK THEM ABOUT WHAT THEY THINK ABOUT YOU PIECES OF EVIL SHIT. THEY SHOULD BE MORE HONEST AND KNOW MORE SBOUT THE HISTORY. BECAUSE THE USA MAKES IT ILLEGAL FOR US TO TEACH REAL PUERTO RICAN HISTORY. WE ARE NOT TAUGHT OUR OWN HISTORY. IT IS WHITE WASHED HISTORY.
I agree with most of the people in this video! There's nothing wrong with going somewhere but act like you have some respect for the people there! You wouldn't act nasty in your friend's house, you would treat your friend's house and belongings with respect and you should have that same mindset when you go to another country or another area! You should treat the people and the culture and the island or the country with respect! Don't act like you own the place!

We are americans 🇵🇷🇺🇸Great video!
Thank you!
Just got back from the island from a seventeen day vacation, the people are so kind and generous. The girls all have beautiful dark skin and hair . Us guys from the main land , could take a lesson from the men over there the grooming and every guy is dressed to the nine. The st seabastion festival was crazy people were everywhere
Nice! I hope you enjoyed your stay. Did you get to see a lot of the island or did you stay mostly in San Juan?
lol, where are those men because as a local I barely see any men dressed nice 😂
I am not Puerto Rican, I am South American, but I go to vac in PR at least once a year
Every time we go, we rent a 4x4 and drive to different places and stay in different towns. But when we are in San Juan, we only use Uber.
So, I've been everywhere on the island, from South to North, from East to West, and center.
I always get into lengthy conversations with locals of different towns about this issue, and the feelings are different from one region to another.
One thing in common is Puerto Ricans welcome ppl who are respectful of their culture, their customes, their traditions, and their land.
But interestingly, one thing I noticed in Old San Juan and San Juan is that ALL Uver drivers, that I use, dislike black Americans.
They say they are the worst, loud, rude, unrespectful, demanding, and they make a mess in the car.
They say only English speaking blacks are like that.
So my take is that Puerto Rico is a wonderful island, and Puerto Ricans are warm ppl. BUT they demand and deserve that their visitors should behave in a civil and respectful way towards the ppl and their land.
lmao thanks for sharing. Have you been picking up on some of the lingo or do you just speak english with them?
@@dougkalagian I speak mostly Spanish with them, my fiance is Australian, so Im always translating fir him
@seus2731 nice, I’m sure he will start picking up on the language. My fiancé is a Puerto Rican and I’m a gringo and I’ve been learning pretty quickly
I get a kick out of people from Puerto Rico, they keep talking about americans and what they fail to realize is, they are 100 percent American at birth!! get over it, my culture is Puerto rican but I am american first!! and proud
Do you live on the island or mainland?
Duh, obviously in paper we are American citizens but the ones that grew up on the island are not the same as growing up in US
Now go do this in Rio Piedras or Hato Rey and ask some Spanish speaking locals what they think 😊
& ask the states in the mainland what we think of the Puerto Rican people coming over to visit or live there. It can go both ways mi amigo 😆
@mckenna514 that is such an ignorant and irrelevant comment 🙄 You sound like a Mckenna 😑
Another great video. Agreed with what they all said. If Gringos want to come visit the island just for vacation or move to the island to enjoy the culture and become a part of Puerto Rico, that's great.
It's when they just come to evade taxes and buy a bunch of properties just to turn them into for vacation rents, and then live in gated Gringo communities. They aren't living here because they love Puerto Rico, they just want to exploit Puerto Rico's beauty to profit themselves, those are the one we yell Gringo Go Home too.
Again great video!! Are there more videos on Puerto Rico coming?
Thank you! We are hoping to film again this Friday but are still determining a topic. The shortlist includes interviewing the public on 1) Act 60, 2) LUMA, 3) Jones act, 4) Debt crisis, 5) Puerto Rican Cultural Identity 6) Reconciling PR/US Identity. Any preferences or recommendations?
After making a series of public interviews (5 to 10), we plan to expand to documentary style mini-series.

I love Amwricas but not greddy but real whites oh yeah.
The older man saying if we wear green like soldiers then go home then Puerto Rico will not get any money for their businesses so how about that?
That man was only talking about the origins of the word “gringo”… it is popularly believed gringo means “green go home” and it started during the mexican-american war, but actually that word is older than that and it was used in Spain way before that. It means a foreign person.
*I hate that word too. This shit feels more like social pressure than sustaining of freedom. It’s GROSS because I see the petty comedy in it. It’s NOT fun.*

GRINGO is a term used for the Irish who fought against America for Mexico ..... Learn History.
What history book did you learn this in? Please share
There is lots of videos on TH-cam about it@@dougkalagian
Boricuas are also Americans by birth! #PR51
Puerto Ricans aren't Hispanics and Latino they are Americans
For me “Gringos” are the people from the United States that doesn’t have Hispanic or Latino background. “Gringo” is easier than “Americano”, it has less syllables, so I use Gringo colloquially and “Americano” or “Estadounidense” when I want to sound fancy 😂 and I don’t mind them moving to the island, as long they are actually living there and working and integrating with the rest of the population, instead of just faking they are living there a few months a year to benefits from the tax incentives…
I'm a middle class person but still trying to make ends meet & I don't mind paying taxes at all I'm used to it.
Gringos... are us Irish...... Read a history book.
Saint Patrick's Battalion
Which history book do you recommend?
@@PaulMuzik 😂😂😂 that doesn’t make sense at all, because the Irish battled alongside the Mexicans in the Mexican war so why would they shout to the Irish battalion “green go home”? 😂😂😂 according to that Mexican war theory that was supposedly shout to the US soldiers, not the Irish and that theory is not even accepted by linguistics. That’s NOT the origin of the word “gringo” 🙄 YOU should read a real history book instead of Internet nonsense. Or at least do a deeper research of the word gringo, instead of only relying on Wikipedia 😂😂😂 The word gringo was used in Spain way before the Mexican war so that “green go” theory is BS. In Spain, the word “gringo” was supposed to mean “griego” (Greek) and it was used in the sense of anything foreign who couldn’t be understand. Like today when we say “eso esta en chino” when we can’t understand a language? Well they said the same at the time but instead of “chino” they used “griego” and that “griego” eventually turned into the word “gringo”. And it is still basically means the same nowadays. If you look for the word gringo in the Spanish RAE dictionary, gringo means anything foreign; it can be a Russian, a British an Asian, but nowadays in the majority of Latin American countries it is used specifically for people from the United States 😉
Is interesting how all the interviewees speak great english
Well not to long ago. White people made it illegal for us to speak Spanish. We couldn't even have our own flag or sing or hum our national anthem. It was called Law 53 The Gag Law. We were forced. If not we go to jail. Thanks USA 🖕

I'm not trying to take over your land geesh but if I ever wanted to move there that's my business not looking to buy an expensive place because I can't afford it I was looking for a cheap place to rent not everyone who moves there is buying expensive property & not all of us gringos are the same but my gosh you think we're all alike & we don't all make a lot of money in the mainland either there are over a half of million people who are homeless in the mainland so would you say we're all rich? @@mkla3333 yes I am
@@Brandon-rr9ik how is Bad Bunny buying property in the US in any way the same thing? Puerto Rico is an island that was (violently) colonized by the United States, and is a tax haven for rich people to purchase property tax-free which only further displaces native people on the island, forcing them out of neighborhoods they’ve known their entire lives because they can no longer afford them. People have been ordered to leave homes they’ve lived in for years just to watch their buildings and houses get turned into AirBnb’s. How is Bad Bunny purchasing a home in already affluent areas in a country that negatively impacts his own country every year causing any negative effect on the United States?
@@mkla3333 you can’t be this ignorant. Okay several US states have tax benefits, don’t you think Bad Bunny bought homes in areas that did that? IE Florida. Nobody is getting moved out in Puerto Rico.

How are people that dumb to blame problems on businesses creating jobs for people and the gringos? Last time I checked someone who is Native American can take advantage of the tax benefits, it’s not the white man only club like you all complain it is.
Oh wait I forgot, airbnb came and told people to move out. It was like slavery all over again. You’re so dumb, most airbnb owners here are puuerto rican. Puerto Rican aren't Spanish and Hispanic and Latino until given back to Spain and getting independence only from Spain your Americans now
@@dougkalagian I mean in retrospect the secession of the at the time Autonomous Overseas Province of The Republic of Puerto Rico of The Spanish Empire(which was amongst the Spanish Empire’s first autonomous provinces) was done illegally. The proper protocols in the Spanish constitution at the time weren’t followed despite it being the result of a war. People tend to forget we had sovereignty for 11 months, with our own autonomous government, currency, representatives in Spains parliament, they could speak and vote, unlike our single representative in the US. Our politicians signatures were allowed on the Spanish constitution. We were granted the same citizenship as those in mainland Spain. We could do business with whatever country we wanted, we governed ourselves. As a result of the American civil war the south was still behind and a good chunk of our infrastructure was comparable with northern US states of the time; I don’t know why they like to paint it as the whole island living in the slums, everywhere you’re gonna have rich and poor areas. Both Spain and the US have done good and bad in P.R. But the fact of the matter is near the end with Spain we had a way better deal than the US has ever had to give. And if I would have been alive in those times, being a Republic member state of an empire is sure as hell better than remaining a colony. But nowadays, just free us, no more being treated second fiddle, give us our freedom. Let us be independent, it’ll be rough for a while yes, but we can make our economy a production based economy again with a reduced consumerist sector.
