Rob Zombie resurrected the Firefly Family in 3 From Hell. Of all the movies he has made, this is the only one that feels like Rob himself wasn't even interested in.

When I first heard this movie was happening, I felt right away it was a bad idea. But when I heard the title 3 FROM HELL, I took it literally and thought maybe it would begin with the Firefly family as dead souls in Hell who are able to haunt people, like Freddy Krueger. Sure, it would have been a weird direction to go in considering the first two films had not been supernatural, but it still would have been more interesting than what we got. Revealing that our three anti-heroes had survived the ending of DEVIL'S REJECTS after what had felt like a triumphant blaze of glory completely undid the ending of that film.

Coming from a guy who's not really a fan of supernatural horror, I'm more into existential and psychological horror, but in saying that, it would be the direction to take 3 from hell, it would work as in a house of a thousand corpses, there was a supernatural element in fact I think the firefly family were killing people as offerings to the other dangerous spirits in the house so that they wouldn't come for them, so it would have been cool to have the fireflies join them and kill some more unsuspecting travellers, that would have been a better direction, to have them live on as an urban legend that's talked about by locals but not taken seriously by outsiders, like I can see the angle they were going for with this movie trying to capture an insight into how killers like Manson steal the zeitgeist and make an impact on the culture but that was only for the opening scene which I really did like but the rest of the movie fell flat, definitely the weakest of the trilogy

I couldn’t agree with you more. This movie was practically the HALLOWEEN Resurrection of the trilogy. We get it, Freddy, Jason, and Chucky have came back numerous times but the difference with them is: They’re demonic spirits or the ghosts of dead people, so at least they have a reason to come back. The fireflies are human beings. I give this movie a 3/10 (SKIP IT)

I actually haven't watched this film. I just don't see it being worth undoing the ending of The Devil's Rejects. But I guess the fact that I didn't much care for House of 1,000 Corpses makes the existence of this film an ever so slightly easier pill to swallow. Seeing The Devil's Rejects lended House of 1,000 Corpses a little bit of additional credit in my eyes. But not much.
It's strange to only really care for the second film in a trilogy.

At least the studios who made Texas Chainsaw films after 2 understood they had to ignore 2 to make more since the Sawyers apart from Grandpa are normal humans who weren't gonna survive chainsaws to the gut and back and a grenade explosion. The Fireflies would have realistically died in the end shootout of Devil's Rejects.

The only difference is I have even less positive things to say about it. Paid $5 bucks for at the Wal-Mart bargin bin , watched once and gave away to a coworker who wanted to see it. A waste of $5. I wish Rob would have just stuck with music and making cool campy music videos. Then we wouldn't have had too endure watching his wife pretending to be Harley Quinn for a full movie.

This one was really disappointing to me. As much as I loved TDR, I was really looking forward to this one. I think Sid's health and the knowledge they were losing him really impacted how this story was told. The first half of the movie was okay, watchable. Once they left the house...it lost me. I agree with what you said about what it did about undoing the ending of TDR. He Halloween Resurrectioned himself. If it had been a better movie then it would've been okay, but it wasnt. I have never had the need to revisit it and I don't own it. I don't even include it as canon. Even my husband, who is a HUGE RZ fan really didn't care for this one.

This movie opened with so much potential. Their time in prison as celebrities and the cult-like following they had gathered could have led to some interesting places, even the fact they survived the shoot-out could of tied back into the supernatural elements of 1000 corpses and doctor Satan. Unfortunately the whole movie just devolved into devils rejects with lower stakes, a shoehorned 'long-lost brother' appearing and a less interesting antagonist.

He should have had Dr. Satan bring them back in some way. THAT is a character I would've liked to have seen more of. He could have added a bit of a supernatural element in that fashion as well. Because the title just makes no sense when you see how they survived. I had high hopes for this movie and Rob took a giant diarrhea dump all over them. I swear if he could get Rodriguez, Tarantino or Del Toro to write him a script or at least re-work one of his scripts and also NOT cast his wife - he has a classic horror movie somewhere in that effed up brain of his. While I do for the most part enjoy the Zombie aesthetic I was wary of this one. The last couple were just OK and the passing of Sid Haig was daunting so just how was this gonna be? I actually enjoyed 3 From Hell it was typical Zombie. The story was iffy, just how really does one survive that many gunshot wounds? (Rhetorical Question). Sheri was not at at her worst but another actress would be much appreciated by now, and Richard was fine, no Captain Spaulding, but fine. 3 From Hell fits nicely in the middle of the road of the Zombie filmography.

Sadly, actor Sid Haig (who played Captain Spaulding) died only five days after this film was released theatrically.
The movie poster featuring the black and white eyes, mugshot style photos across the bottom, and striking red font is meant to be a reference to the poster for 1976's Helter Skelter (1976).
Post-production was postponed for five months due to Rob Zombie's and Marilyn Manson's tour.
(at around 1h 28 mins) In the film the song In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida plays. This same song was requested by Bill Moseley's character Chop Top in The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 (1986).
The character Carlos Perro is wearing one of Rob Zombie's iconic hats.
Sheri Moon Zombie had to take archery lessons to learn how to properly use a bow and arrow.
Sequel to House of 1000 Corpses (2003) and The Devil's Rejects (2005).
The main characters: Firefly, Captain Spaulding, and Otis Driftwood are the same names of characters played by Groucho Marx in the Marx Brothers movies.
The film was entirely shot in Los Angeles, California.
Dee Wallace's character is an homage to the main character, Ilsa, in the movie Ilsa, the Wicked Warden (1977), also known as "Ilsa - The Mad Butcher", "Wanda, the Wicked Warden", "Greta - Haus ohne Männer" (original title), and "Greta the Torturer."
On the film's third night in theaters, it was screened in a double feature with its predecessor, The Devil's Rejects (2005).
The appearance of Wade Williams as a member of Baby's parole board may be poking fun at the fact that he played a prison warden in the TV series Prison Break (2005).
Richard Brake is left-handed just like Bill Moseley and Sid Haig.
Captain Spauldings last words before execution were the exact same as Ted Bundy's. "give my love to my family and friends".
The front of Warden Virgil Dallas Harper's house is an exact replica of the front of the house from the original THE DESPERATE HOURS. When Otis comes up with the plan to take the Warden's family hostage to force him to free his sister, Baby, he says the plan is based on THE DESPERATE HOURS.

Too little, too late. Sid Haig half-dead when they made it. Christ, Rob. Christ. If you wanted to piss a lot of people off you did it well! I truly believe that Rob Zombie's massive problem is that he doesn't know what respect is. The lack of respect is not "cool" or "edgy", it's offensive. You a hole. He doesn't self-censorship or hold back, so I appreciate him for that. I feel so paradoxical about it all.

Because of Sid Haig's health, they had to re-write most of the entire movie, which is most likely why it felt emptier. I can imagine the original script being much better, but rushed re-writes never work. Rob basically had to sneak Did on set for his scene since he couldn't pass the health requirements for being on set, so we are lucky we even got him at all.

I was honestly on board with this movie for the first 50 minutes. This was honestly one of the first Rob Zombie movies with a CLEAR plot line, which serves the movie well.
I mean sure, there were issues for the first half (like plot holes and stupid choices the characters make), but I thought it was effective with Otis’s escape scene, the first sets of captives they take, and fleshing out the character of Baby so we can see how crazy prison has made her.
(Minor spoilers through the rest of this comment)
But after they break Baby out of prison, the story has no idea where it wants to go (literally a character blatantly states they have no idea where to go). So the film is just a slog to get through the rest of the run time because there no point or stakes to anything.
Also this film asks you to accept a lot of unbelievable things in this grounded universe. I understand no realistic film can be completely grounded in reality, but your movies universe needs to abide by some set of rules (otherwise there are no stakes in the story so no cares about the plot).
I mean, the 3 most wanted convicts in the world were able to drive to Mexico and cross the border in a stolen car from the murder victim of the security guard from Babies prison? I’m sorry this would never happen and takes me WAY out of the movie, so I can’t feel any tension on the will they won’t they get caught plot line.
Plus wtf happened to the clown. I mean they mention him in a couple throwaway lines, but they never make it clear on what happened to him. Did he die? Or is he just too old for the characters to go back for him? If it’s the ladder then that doesn’t fit at all with the family oriented villains we’ve come to know.

Hard to understand how Rob zombie went from making some great movies in the beginning to this monstrosity. I tried the munsters yesterday and turned it off.. could try to finish

9:59 Your description of Sheri Moon's laugh reminds me of an episode of The New Batman Adventures where Joker leaves Harley in Arkham and replaces her with a random woman he even calls Fake Harley and her laugh grates on even him.

I will admit, a lot of the time his grotesque dialogue isn’t needed. However, for something like Halloween, the dialogue at the beginning made sense because he went in the direction of showing where Myers’s issues came from.

Rob puzzles me so much. His music is great and listening to his style you’d think he’d know horror but…rape and beastiality is not horror. What’s funny is both him and his wife are vegan.
And like…anytime a dog or any animal is in a horror movie I’m rooting for it to live. Oftentimes we root for them over the humans in the movie. Why would I wanna hear dialogue about it getting sexually assaulted by a human? 🥴

The only way the events of this movie could have happened means that after the police shot the living hell out of Spaulding, Otis and Baby... they went over to them, and began doing intense CPR and medical treatment, called in ambulances and rushed them to the hospital and performed intense round the clock surgery on all 3... seems to make a lot of sense.
This movie didn't happen. They died, as they deserved to at the end of Devils Rejects. Ill never watch it again.

Hey Cody. I'm sure you get request ALL the time, just wondering if you plan to ever review any foreign horror films (Korean, Japanese, etc) or any of the Giallo films from the 70s and 80s.
I don't know if they're your thing but I'd be interested to hear your take.

Its interesting how a lot of people that don't even like rob zombie movies overall (me), a lot of people consider the devils rejects. I was grossed out and put off my many parts but it was made very well and was strangely enjoyable. I remember Roger Ebert even gave it a good review.

I don't think this movie should have been made. plus the only Rob Zombie movies that I actually enjoyed where House of 1000 Corpses & both Halloween movies. I just wish he made two more Halloween movies back then. Especially since Halloween 2 ended in a cliffhanger.

It pays to follow horror movie news, learned that the hard way! Didn't know Sid Haig was sick, and I think the marketing for this movie deliberately led one to think that the "3 from Hell" was the origonal Rejects Trio. Richard Brake is great.. but like you said Cody the hole left by Haig was just HUGE. Felt like a "doing it for the paycheck" movie

I remember going to see this on the one or two nights it was in the theaters as a special attraction and the deflated feeling I and everyone else seemed to have leaving the theater. It's like it hit you right away on how this experience was going to be when Captain Spalding was executed. Even just the idea of a third film seemed ludicrous based off the ending of the last film. I so wanted to love this film, but I have to agree that it is not a good movie in any way.

  • @Xanatos21

Yeah, the story REALLY ended with TDR. If anything, 3FH was just a fever dream that Baby, Otis, and Captain Spaulding had before getting gunned down by law enforcement. To me, 3FH is NOT canon. Baby, Otis, and Captain Spaulding DIED at the end of TDR. 3FH was just a fever dream and nothing more. Simple as that. I also perceive Halloween: Resurrection in the exact, same way. Michael Myers WAS decapitated by Laurie at the very end of Halloween: H20. Resurrection was just a fever dream/nightmare that Laurie had and nothing more. Simple as that.

Rob Zombie could deliver one of the best horror movies ever made if he could get out of his own way and hire the right cast, a good co-writer and someone to better edit his films.
31, 3FH and The Munsters are all great examples of poor casting, writing and/ or editing.

The thing about 3 From Hell is that Rob Zombie had two movies he was trying to make and couldn't get the funding for. One was a hockey movie, and the other one was about the final days of Groucho Marx ( which I really would have liked to see ). When those didn't pan out, he retreated back to the safety of the Firefly saga. So there was a reason this disappointing entry felt so uninspired.
