I dunno if I'd reach for cast iron with a tomato based dish. You'd put some hurt on the seasoning. Have you considered carbon steel for backpacking? It's a weight penalty (1-2lbs) that a lot of people would balk at but for a group, it opens up some interesting options since it can tolerate cooking over a fire like cast iron. I've been having a lot of fun with it.
As long as you treat it well, an acidic dish won’t ruin your cast iron. And I use many pots for outdoor cookin. Aluminum, titanium, steel. All can work well.
